How to Keep a YouTube Live Loop Running When OBS Restarts

OBS automatic reconnect does not reopen a closed application. Pair an OS-level restart mechanism with OBS’s --startstreaming option, then test YouTube’s event behavior before relying on unattended recovery.

To resume a YouTube Live loop after OBS closes, you need two separate safeguards: a way to relaunch OBS and a way to make the newly launched OBS start streaming. OBS’s Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect setting is for a broken connection while OBS is running; it does not restart a closed OBS process. Configure an operating-system launch or supervisor to reopen OBS, then use OBS’s documented --startstreaming launch parameter if it should start streaming automatically. Test the full sequence on a private or unlisted broadcast: neither OBS nor YouTube documentation guarantees that a process restart preserves the same event, watch page, archive, or viewer continuity.

What has to recover when OBS restarts

A loop stream depends on more than OBS reconnecting to the internet. After OBS exits, something must launch the application again; OBS must load the intended stream destination and loop setup; and YouTube must accept the encoder feed and handle the broadcast state as intended.

  • OBS process: Use an operating-system launch method or process supervisor to reopen OBS after it exits. OBS documents launch parameters and automated launching, but does not act as a watchdog for its own closed process. OBS Project: Launch Parameters.
  • Streaming connection: OBS automatic reconnect addresses interruptions between a running OBS instance and the streaming server, not an OBS process that has closed. OBS Project: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  • YouTube broadcast: YouTube receives the encoder feed using a server URL and stream key. Its auto-start and auto-stop options affect whether encoder signals also start or end a broadcast. They do not establish that a restarted OBS session will continue the same event or watch page. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Configure OBS and YouTube for recovery

  1. Check the YouTube stream destination

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the intended stream and verify the server URL and stream key used by OBS. YouTube describes stream keys as the information that identifies where an encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If you use the same key for repeated encoder sessions, choose a reusable or custom key where available. Treat the key like a password; if it is exposed, reset it and replace it in OBS. See YouTube’s live stream settings help and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

  2. Choose how YouTube handles encoder start and stop

In the stream settings, review Auto-start and Auto-stop. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” Auto-start can avoid a separate Go Live action when encoder content arrives. Auto-stop can end the broadcast after the encoder stops, which may not suit a plan to reconnect to the same event. If you prefer to control the event in Live Control Room, manage Go Live and End Stream there instead. Test the selected behavior: YouTube does not promise that either choice preserves the same broadcast object or watch page after an OBS process restart.

    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. Enable OBS automatic reconnect for brief connection drops

In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find Automatically Reconnect. Configure it for temporary network interruptions. This is useful alongside process recovery, but it does not reopen OBS if the application exits. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

  4. Arrange for OBS to launch again

Use your operating system’s startup or scheduling facilities, or a process supervisor, to launch OBS after a crash or reboot. The exact configuration depends on your operating system and the mechanism you choose; OBS’s launch documentation covers parameterized shortcuts and scheduled or automated launching, not a universal watchdog configuration. See OBS Project: Launch Parameters.

  5. Start streaming when OBS launches

Add --startstreaming to the OBS launch command or shortcut if you want streaming to begin whenever OBS launches. OBS documents this parameter as “Automatically start streaming.” It starts streaming on launch; it does not itself relaunch OBS. Confirm the launch setup loads the correct stream destination, scene, and loop media before relying on unattended recovery.

  6. Check the loop source separately

If your loop is a media source, verify its playback and restart behavior in a test. OBS’s Quick Start Guide confirms that video can be added as a source, but the cited documentation does not establish how a particular media source will resume after an application restart. Do not assume the loop position or playback state will be preserved. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.

Test the complete restart before relying on it

  1. Set up a private or unlisted test stream and note the intended YouTube watch URL and event settings.
  2. Start the loop, then exit OBS as you expect it to exit in the real failure scenario. Confirm your launch mechanism reopens OBS and that --startstreaming, if configured, begins the encoder feed.
  3. Watch from a separate device. Check picture, sound, loop playback, YouTube’s stream preview, and whether viewers can reach the intended watch page. YouTube recommends testing, checking stream preview and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  4. Repeat the test for a brief network interruption without closing OBS. This checks the separate automatic-reconnect behavior.
  5. Verify how the stream appears in YouTube Studio after each test: whether the broadcast is still live, whether a new event or URL is involved, and whether the result matches your archive expectations.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That policy does not guarantee archive or event continuity across an OBS process restart; test your specific setup. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
OBS closes and stays closed No restart mechanism is configured, or it does not detect the exit. Check the operating-system launch or supervisor configuration. OBS automatic reconnect is not a process supervisor.
OBS reopens but does not stream The launch did not include --startstreaming, or OBS did not load the intended stream destination. Check the launch command and verify the YouTube server URL and stream key in OBS. Test launch behavior before relying on it.
OBS is streaming but YouTube has not started the broadcast YouTube’s auto-start setting or the Live Control Room broadcast state may not match the workflow. Review auto-start and test whether encoder content starts the event; otherwise start it from Live Control Room as intended.
YouTube ends the event when OBS stops Auto-stop may be enabled. Review auto-stop and test the desired start/stop sequence. Do not assume the same event will remain available after a restart.
The picture is frozen, black, or the loop does not resume The media source or its playback behavior may not be recovering as expected. Test the source after a full OBS exit and launch; verify the scene and media source actually produce video before going public.
OBS remains open but drops frames or loses the server connection Network instability, bitrate limits, VPN or security software, or faulty network hardware may be involved. Treat this as a connection issue rather than a process restart. Follow the checks in OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting and test automatic reconnect separately.
