In FFmpeg, set an output frame rate and use -fps_mode cfr, or use the fps filter. FFmpeg achieves the requested schedule by duplicating or dropping frames; changing the filename or container alone does not do this.
You may not need to convert every phone video: frame timing varies by clip, and not every OBS workflow requires CFR. Check the source and your OBS project before choosing a target rate.
What variable frame rate means
Frame rate describes how often video frames are displayed. With variable frame rate (VFR), the display durations of video samples vary; constant frame rate (CFR) uses a consistent frame schedule. Apple’s QuickTime format documentation describes its VFR indication in terms of whether those sample durations vary: Apple QuickTime format documentation.
VFR is about frame timing, not bitrate. Constant bitrate (CBR) and constant frame rate (CFR) describe different properties: changing a bitrate setting does not make a video CFR.

Check the clip and choose a target rate
Inspect the actual file
Look at the video properties or frame-timing information for the clip you plan to use. Do not infer its timing mode from the phone model alone: recording behavior can depend on the clip and camera app. If the file is already CFR and your OBS workflow plays it correctly, conversion may be unnecessary.
Match the output to your project
Choose a target rate that makes sense for the source footage and the intended OBS project. There is no universal rate that suits every phone clip or project. If you do not know the project’s rate, check its video settings before exporting rather than guessing.

Convert to CFR with FFmpeg
FFmpeg provides two documented ways to make the output CFR: the output option -fps_mode cfr and the fps filter. Both can duplicate or drop frames to reach the chosen rate, so conversion changes the frame schedule; it is not just a metadata edit. See the FFmpeg documentation for -fps_mode and the FFmpeg filters documentation for the fps filter.
- Inspect the source clip and note the video and audio streams you need to retain.
- Select the CFR output rate to match your footage and OBS project.
- In FFmpeg, configure CFR output with
-fps_mode cfrand the selected output rate, or use thefpsfilter with that rate. - Choose an output container and codecs compatible with your intended workflow, and handle audio stream mapping deliberately.
- Export the file, then inspect its properties and play it through before adding it to OBS.
The exact command depends on the chosen rate, input streams, container, codecs, and audio handling. Do not copy a generic command without checking those choices against your file.

Using a graphical converter instead
If you prefer not to use a command line, choose a converter whose export settings explicitly offer a constant frame rate or a fixed output frame rate. Set it to the rate you selected for your OBS project, then review the available video, audio, and container settings. A graphical interface may make those options easier to find, but the key is that the export performs a frame-rate conversion—not merely a container change.
After exporting, verify the frame-rate mode if the software reports it, and watch or scrub through the file with its audio. The exact menu names and inspection steps vary by converter and operating system.

Verify the export before using it in OBS
- Check the output properties for a fixed frame rate or CFR mode, where available.
- Play the video from beginning to end, listening for audio sync problems and watching for visible judder.
- Compare duration and motion with the source; duplicating or dropping frames can affect how motion appears.
- If the export behaves unexpectedly, revisit the target rate and the converter’s frame-rate and audio settings before importing it into OBS.
Why remuxing is not CFR conversion
OBS’s remux feature converts a recording to a different container, such as MP4, for compatibility. It does not describe the frame-scheduling operation needed to convert VFR to CFR. Use a CFR-capable export for frame timing; remux only when container compatibility is the separate issue. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.

The file is still reported as variable frame rate
Check that the export used a CFR mode or fixed-rate filter, rather than only changing the container or filename. Confirm the output settings and inspect the newly generated file rather than the original.

Motion looks uneven after conversion
Recheck the target rate against the source and OBS project. CFR conversion reaches the selected schedule by duplicating or dropping frames, which can change how motion looks.
Audio is out of sync or missing
Review the converter’s audio stream selection, mapping, and output codec settings. Audio handling depends on the input and export choices; changing frame timing alone does not specify how audio should be handled.
OBS or another application still will not open the file
Check the container and codecs as a separate compatibility question. OBS documents remuxing for container conversion of recordings, but remuxing should not be treated as a substitute for CFR conversion.
