Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep a recorded speedrun playing on YouTube Live overnight, send the video file through an encoder connected to a YouTube Live stream, and set the encoder’s media source to repeat. For a do-it-yourself setup, a computer and software encoder such as OBS can work, but the computer, power and internet connection must stay available. YouTube’s own guidance recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health; it does not guarantee that a local setup will recover from an interruption.
Before you set up the stream
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- Have a completed speedrun recording ready as a video file, and confirm that you have the rights needed for its gameplay footage, commentary and music. A recording being yours does not automatically clear music or other material included in it.
- Choose whether you need a continuous overnight broadcast, a saved replay, or both. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s archiving guidance also notes the importance of planning around this limit.
Set up an overnight stream with a computer and encoder
YouTube describes an encoder as a tool that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder setup guide covers connecting an encoder to YouTube Live. The steps below describe the workflow; the exact labels for adding and looping a local file vary by encoder and version.
- Confirm live access. Verify the channel and check that live streaming is enabled before planning the overnight broadcast. If you are activating it for the first time, allow up to 24 hours.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Start or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding connection fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if exposed.
- Choose the recording as the video source. In the encoder, add the recorded run as a media or file source. Enable that source’s repeat or loop option if you want playback to begin again when it reaches the end. The specific setting name and behavior depend on the software; check its current documentation, and test that the video actually restarts rather than leaving a blank or frozen output.
- Set a sustainable output. Choose the resolution and frame rate appropriate to the recording and your upload connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval in its live encoder settings. Test the upload bitrate at the intended resolution and motion level, and choose one your connection can sustain steadily. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the encoder connection.
- Preview and test before the overnight run. Start the encoder, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, and review stream health. Confirm that gameplay, audio and the loop behave as intended at the target quality. YouTube’s stream health guidance covers monitoring the incoming feed.
- Go live and keep the local setup running. Confirm the broadcast page has the intended visibility, then start the broadcast from the encoder or Studio workflow. Keep the computer awake, the encoder open, power connected and network stable for the full run. A local setup depends on these remaining available.
Plan around replays and very long broadcasts
If viewers need a YouTube replay, an overnight stream’s total duration matters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For a broadcast likely to exceed 12 hours, plan an intentional stop and restart if an archive matters, or keep a separate local recording as a backup. Do not promise a complete YouTube replay for a stream that crosses that threshold.
Live DVR also has limits: YouTube says rewind can be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams over 12 hours. Viewers may still be able to pause and resume, but do not assume they can rewind through the full overnight broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

| StreamNeo — cloud playback for uploaded videos, listed first because it can keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. | Recorded speedruns you want to loop on YouTube Live without leaving a computer running at home. | Upload the recording and configure the YouTube stream key; check available storage and plan length for your needs. |
| Existing computer with software encoder such as OBS | A one-off overnight stream or a creator comfortable leaving a computer and encoder running. | Requires local power and network throughout; setup, monitoring and recovery after interruption are your responsibility. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Repeated scheduled playback or a workflow where avoiding a general-purpose computer is valuable. | Requires a hardware purchase and confirmation that its media scheduling, storage and recovery features match your workflow. |
| Other hosted cloud service | Continuous prerecorded streaming without a dedicated computer on site. | Compare current features, upload and asset workflow, recurring cost, reliability and terms; verify that it supports your precise prerecorded speedrun workflow. |
YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live. The same directory lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube live streams, and Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video; the listing does not establish that Upstream.so’s exact workflow is equivalent for prerecorded speedruns. See YouTube’s encoder information. The examples are options, not requirements: YouTube says expensive equipment is not needed to get started.

Troubleshoot common overnight-stream problems
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Check that live streaming is enabled, the channel meets eligibility requirements, and the stream URL and key match the stream created in Studio. If a key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The stream starts but playback does not repeat: Check the media source’s repeat or loop setting in the encoder, then test a complete playback cycle before leaving it unattended. Looping controls differ by software and version.
- The picture stutters or the stream health is poor: Test the upload connection at the chosen resolution and motion level. Reduce the bitrate or output demand until the connection can sustain it, and use CBR with the recommended two-second keyframe interval.
- The broadcast stops after a power, network or software interruption: A local computer-and-encoder workflow requires those components to remain available. YouTube’s cited setup guidance recommends monitoring but does not promise automatic recovery for a local encoder. For unattended streaming, compare recovery behavior before choosing hardware or a cloud service.
- The overnight replay is missing or incomplete: Check the total stream duration. YouTube says an archive may not be captured when a stream exceeds 12 hours; retain a local recording or plan a stop and restart if a YouTube replay is important.
- Viewers cannot rewind to an earlier run: DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. This is a YouTube playback limitation, not necessarily a fault in the encoder.
