To keep a study-with-me stream running from a spare PC, leave the computer powered on, awake, connected to the internet, and running OBS Studio. Send OBS to a scheduled YouTube Live broadcast using that broadcast’s stream URL and private stream key, then test the complete setup before relying on it unattended. The PC is the encoder host: if it sleeps, shuts down, or loses its connection, it stops sending the stream.
What the spare PC has to do
OBS encodes the video and sends it to YouTube over your internet connection. The spare PC must remain on and awake for as long as you want it to send the feed. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide explains how to connect an encoder; Windows can prevent sleep while an application is active through system-required power requests, though the exact power controls vary by Windows version and device policy.
A spare PC may be suitable, but meeting software minimum requirements does not guarantee it can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements, and cautions that actual performance depends on workload. Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the result on your specific machine.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Check the PC and connection. Install a current version of OBS Studio and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. Begin with a modest output resolution and frame rate if you are unsure how the PC will perform; increase them only after testing. OBS’s quick-start guide covers initial setup.
- Create or schedule a YouTube Live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using an encoder. Choose the audience, visibility, and schedule that fit your channel and confirm whether the broadcast is set to auto-start or requires a manual Go Live action in Live Control Room. The available workflow depends on the settings you choose.
- Copy the connection details into OBS. In YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate custom server option, and enter the requested details. Labels and available connection choices can change, so follow the controls shown by the current versions of OBS and Studio. A stream key is a credential: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it.
- Configure the study scene. Add the sources you need, such as a video, clock, or text overlay, and check the audio meters. Avoid adding unnecessary animated or high-resolution sources on an older PC; scene complexity adds work for the machine. If you are playing background music or using other material you do not own, confirm that you have the necessary rights before streaming.
- Set an output the PC and upload connection can sustain. In OBS, inspect Settings → Output and Settings → Video. Select an encoder your PC can handle, set the output resolution and frame rate, and choose a bitrate that fits your available upload bandwidth. Exact values depend on the resolution, frame rate, encoder, network, and the current YouTube guidance for your broadcast. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Its streaming tips explain the bandwidth constraint. A speed test on a shared connection may overstate what remains available while other devices are using it.
- Check keyframe and encoder settings. Use the current YouTube recommendations for your selected format and encoder rather than copying settings meant for a different resolution or frame rate. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard is a starting point, not a guarantee; confirm the broadcast’s health in YouTube Studio after sending a test.
- Test the exact go-live process. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Confirm the right scene, picture, audio, stream status, and intended auto-start or manual Go Live behavior in Studio. Do not leave the setup unattended until you have verified that the broadcast is actually visible to viewers as intended.
Keep Windows awake and OBS running
Before a long session, check the active Windows power plan and set sleep behavior so the PC will not suspend during the broadcast. Menu names vary across Windows versions, manufacturer utilities, and managed devices, so verify the setting on the spare PC rather than assuming a universal path. Keep the computer connected to power and make sure its network connection is stable.

OBS can be configured to reconnect after a dropped connection, and it supports a --startstreaming launch parameter. These can reduce manual work, but launching OBS automatically does not ensure that Windows will log in, the network will be ready, or YouTube will accept the stream after a restart. Test recovery and startup behavior under realistic conditions before depending on them.
Plan long sessions and archived video
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the study session may run longer, do not assume YouTube will create one continuous archived video beyond that limit. Decide how to handle the broadcast and any recording you need, and check YouTube’s current guidance before planning a long session around its archive behavior.

Troubleshooting a stream that stops or looks wrong
- The broadcast ends when nobody is at the PC: Check whether Windows slept, the PC shut down, OBS closed, or the network disconnected. Adjust the power plan and test the unattended setup again.
- YouTube Studio does not receive a signal: Confirm that OBS is streaming to the correct stream URL and that the key belongs to the intended broadcast. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and update OBS.
- The stream drops or reports connection problems: Reduce the bitrate or output workload, check for competing upload traffic, and verify that the available upload capacity leaves the recommended headroom. Confirm OBS’s reconnect behavior and test whether it recovers.
- The PC struggles, drops frames, or becomes unstable: Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or try a different encoder supported by the hardware. OBS notes that 60 fps can demand substantially more resources than 30 fps; there is no setting that can be prescribed without knowing the PC and workload.
- The stream is live in OBS but not visible as expected: Check the broadcast status and preview in YouTube Studio. Verify whether the scheduled stream uses auto-start or requires a manual Go Live action.
- Audio or picture is missing: Check the selected OBS sources and audio meters, then confirm both in YouTube’s preview before leaving the session unattended.
