OBS’s Automatic Reconnect is for a broken stream connection; it is not a guarantee that your broadcast continues while the OBS application is closed or restarting. If you need a YouTube stream to keep playing independently of a home computer, a cloud service is an alternative.
What looping can do during an OBS restart
A loop setting handles the end of a file or playlist. It does not keep the broadcast alive independently of OBS. If OBS exits or restarts, the local media source and OBS’s stream output stop while the application is unavailable. Whether viewers see the existing broadcast resume after OBS reconnects depends on the streaming platform and setup; the platform is not specified here, so uninterrupted playback cannot be promised.
OBS’s documentation describes Automatic Reconnect as a stream configuration for connection recovery, not as a way to keep output flowing while OBS itself is stopped. Treat it as a tool for a dropped connection while OBS is still running, not as restart protection. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Choose the right OBS audio source
| Use case | OBS source | What to configure | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local audio file | Media Source | Enable Loop so the file repeats after playback ends. | A supported local audio file; OBS documentation lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. |
| A playlist of files | VLC Video | Check Loop Playlist. OBS’s guide says it is enabled by default. | VLC must be installed. With 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. |
These are documented source behaviors, not a guarantee that the broadcast survives an application restart. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide covers both options.

Set up a looping sleep track or playlist
For one long recording
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that carries your sleep audio.
- Select the local recording in the source’s properties. OBS documentation lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among common supported audio formats.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the source is audible in your OBS audio mixer.
- Let the recording reach its end during a controlled check and verify that playback starts again. A successful loop confirms repeat playback while OBS is running; it does not test restart continuity.
For a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source and select or build the playlist in its properties.
- Check Loop Playlist. OBS’s guide says this is enabled by default, but verify the setting rather than relying on the default.
- Test the playlist reaching its end and returning to the beginning while OBS remains open.
What to do when OBS restarts
- After OBS is back, check that the intended scene and audio source are active and that the source is playing.
- Check the stream connection in OBS. Automatic Reconnect may help with a connection interruption while OBS is running, but it does not establish that output continues while the OBS process is shut down.
- Check the streaming platform’s status for the broadcast and determine whether it accepts the encoder’s reconnection as a continuation or treats it differently. Platform-specific behavior cannot be determined without knowing which service you use.
- Before relying on scripted recovery, test a restart with a noncritical stream and observe both OBS and the platform’s viewer-facing broadcast. Repeat the test with your actual OBS release and platform.
Can OBS automation restart the source?
OBS WebSocket gives external tools a way to control scenes and sources. The OBS Remote Control guide says WebSocket integration is included by default starting with OBS Studio 28 and recommends protecting the interface with a password. That can support an automation workflow, but the documented control capability alone does not prove that viewers will see uninterrupted playback during an OBS restart. Verify the full restart and reconnection behavior with your platform before depending on it. OBS Remote Control Guide

If your goal is for a YouTube sleep music stream to keep running without OBS or a computer staying on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.

Troubleshooting the audio loop
- The track stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist is checked on the VLC Video source.
- The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- The source loops, but viewers lose the stream when OBS restarts: Looping only controls local media playback while OBS is open. Check the platform’s behavior when the encoder disconnects, then test a restart in a controlled setup.
- OBS reconnects, but continuity is unclear: Automatic Reconnect addresses stream connection recovery; it does not by itself establish how the platform presents the broadcast during an OBS process restart.
- An automation tool can control OBS, but viewers still see an interruption: Scene or source control is not proof of uninterrupted platform playback. Test the complete sequence—OBS restart, source playback, reconnection, and platform status—before relying on it.
