How to Keep a Raspberry Pi from Sleeping During an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

A blank display and a suspended FFmpeg job are different problems. Use the matching Raspberry Pi OS or FFmpeg fix, and diagnose actual stream drops separately.

First identify what “sleeping” means: if only the monitor goes blank, change the display’s blanking setting; if FFmpeg is marked as a stopped background job, prevent it from reading terminal input with -nostdin. Neither fix keeps a stream alive through a power, network, or YouTube ingest failure.

Identify what stopped

A black screen does not by itself mean the Raspberry Pi or FFmpeg has stopped. Check whether the stream continues and whether FFmpeg is still running. Match the remedy to the symptom:

Symptom Likely control to check What the change affects Reboot?
Graphical desktop monitor blanks, but the stream continues Raspberry Pi OS Screen Blanking Display only No, according to the documented instructions
Text-only console monitor blanks Kernel console blanking parameter Console display only Yes
Wayland HDMI display needs to be switched off or on wlr-randr HDMI display output only No reboot is specified in the cited instructions
Shell says the background FFmpeg job stopped or was suspended FFmpeg -nostdin or Linux standard-input redirection FFmpeg terminal-input handling No

If the desktop monitor blanks while the stream continues

On Raspberry Pi OS with a graphical desktop, use Raspberry Pi menu → Preferences → Control Centre → Display and switch Screen Blanking off. The documented alternative is to run sudo raspi-config, then choose 2 Display Options → D2 Screen Blanking and answer No. Raspberry Pi documentation gives 600 seconds (10 minutes) as the default inactivity period when desktop blanking is enabled: Raspberry Pi configuration documentation.

This setting controls the desktop display. It does not keep FFmpeg running or repair a dropped stream.

If a text-only console monitor blanks

A text console uses a separate kernel console-blanking setting; the desktop Screen Blanking toggle is not the relevant control. Raspberry Pi’s documented instruction is: “Add consoleblank=0 to never blank the screen.”

  1. Open /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt for editing.
  2. Append consoleblank=0 to its existing single line. Keep the file on one line.
  3. Save the file and reboot the Pi.
  4. After reboot, inspect the current setting with cat /sys/module/kernel/parameters/consoleblank.

See Raspberry Pi’s console blanking instructions. These path and menu directions are for Raspberry Pi OS; check your installed release if its path or labels differ.

If you want to control HDMI output under Wayland

Raspberry Pi documents wlr-randr for managing an attached display. For HDMI0, turn the display off with:

export WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1
wlr-randr --output HDMI-A-1 --off

Turn it on again with:

export WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1
wlr-randr --output HDMI-A-1 --on

This switches HDMI output; it is not a process keep-alive. See Raspberry Pi’s Wayland display instructions.

If FFmpeg is suspended as a background job

When FFmpeg is launched in the background from an interactive shell, it can check console input and be suspended by the shell. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends -nostdin to prevent those input checks. Place the option in the invocation, adapting your existing input, output, and streaming arguments:

ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT

On Linux, another option—if the command does not need standard input—is to redirect it from /dev/null:

If the Pi or stream actually stops

If the display setting and FFmpeg input handling do not match what you observe, do not assume the Pi entered a system-wide sleep state. Check the evidence separately before changing power or streaming settings:

  • YouTube ingest: check whether YouTube still reports an active incoming stream and whether the stream key or ingest connection failed.

The cited Raspberry Pi and FFmpeg instructions establish remedies for display blanking and terminal-input suspension; they do not establish a universal fix for device-wide suspend, power loss, network failure, or YouTube stream termination.

Settings that are easy to misapply

Do not use HDMI blanking as a process fix

Raspberry Pi’s legacy configuration reference describes hdmi_blanking as controlling HDMI response to an operating-system DPMS standby request. It is not a general FFmpeg keep-alive setting, and the reference says Raspberry Pi 4 does not switch off HDMI output with hdmi_blanking=1. See Raspberry Pi’s legacy configuration reference.

Do not confuse shutdown behavior with screen blanking

Raspberry Pi documentation discusses VPU sleep mode in the context of shutdown behavior for supported Pi models. That is not the same as the desktop blanking timeout or an FFmpeg job suspended while checking terminal input. See Raspberry Pi’s shutdown instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a Raspberry Pi or computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
