On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and set the plugged-in Make my device sleep after option to Never or to a period longer than your planned broadcast. The screen-off timer is separate: your display can turn off while the PC stays awake. On a laptop, check the plugged-in lid-close action too.
These settings prevent idle sleep; they do not guarantee a stream will keep running through encoder, network, power, or heat problems. Test your complete setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
Keep Windows 11 awake while the stream runs
- Connect the PC to power. For a long broadcast, use the plugged-in settings and keep the power connection secure.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Windows may show slightly different wording depending on the version, hardware, or management policy.
- Under the plugged-in options, set Make my device sleep after to Never, or choose a duration longer than the expected stream. If you choose a duration, allow for the possibility that the broadcast will run late.
- Choose a separate plugged-in setting for when the screen turns off. The display does not need to remain lit for the computer to stay awake.
Microsoft describes sleep as a low-power state from which the PC starts quickly and returns to where you left off. For a running broadcast, however, the relevant setting is the sleep timeout: if Windows sleeps, the local player or encoder may stop sending video.
What to check on a laptop
Changing the sleep timeout does not necessarily change what happens when you close the lid. Open the lid-close controls and set the plugged-in action so closing the lid does not put the PC to sleep, if you need the stream to continue with the lid shut. Microsoft documents separate lid and power-button actions in its Windows power and sleep guidance.

Check the laptop manufacturer’s operating advice and cooling requirements before running it closed for an extended period. If it gets too hot, performance or stability can suffer even though Windows is configured not to sleep.
Windows 10: the older settings route
On Windows 10, Microsoft documents the route as Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. In Power Options, review the selected plan’s sleep timeout and, on a laptop, the lid-close action while plugged in. Available controls can vary by device.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s power-mode page. Treat these steps as guidance for existing Windows 10 installations, not a statement that the operating system continues to receive general support.
Confirm the loop and YouTube encoder separately
A PC that stays awake is only one part of a live loop. Confirm that your chosen playback or encoding application is set to repeat the source; the exact control depends on the application. Then verify the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, stream URL, and stream key. The stream key functions like a password: keep it private.

YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance gives the following bitrate values for 2160p at 60 frames per second. These are recommendations for the video bitrate sent to YouTube, not a guarantee of required internet upload speed.

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. For 4K, the cited guidance does not offer low latency; the stream uses normal latency. YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and connections.

Prepare and test the event
- In the chosen encoder, enter YouTube’s stream URL and the correct stream key. Do not share or publish the key.
- Set the output to 2160p at 60 fps and choose a supported codec. Use the bitrate YouTube recommends for that codec as a starting point, while considering the stability of your upload connection.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then confirm the source is actually looping.
- Start a test and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the setup for a public or extended run. YouTube advises testing beforehand and monitoring stream health during the event.
If the stream stops even though the PC is awake
Do not assume every interruption is caused by sleep. Check the symptom against the likely cause:
- The PC is asleep: Recheck the plugged-in sleep timeout and, on a laptop, the lid-close action. A managed work or school PC may restrict these controls through policy.
- The PC is awake but video stopped: Check whether the player or encoder is still running and whether its loop or repeat option remains enabled.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Inspect the encoder’s output settings and the stability of the internet connection. Compare the selected codec’s 4K60 bitrate with YouTube’s guidance above; a target bitrate is not proof that the connection can sustain it.
- The encoder lost its connection: Check its connection state, stream URL, and stream key. If you reset or replace the key in YouTube, update the encoder as well.
- The laptop becomes hot or unstable: Reopen the lid or improve cooling in line with the manufacturer’s guidance; a no-sleep setting cannot prevent thermal problems.
- Settings are missing or keep changing: Check whether the PC is managed by an organization and whether its policies or hardware expose different power controls.
After changing a setting or correcting a fault, run another test and watch the preview and stream-health indicators. A no-sleep configuration addresses idle suspension only; it is not a promise of uninterrupted broadcasting.
