Set Windows Update’s active hours around the schedule, check for pending restart notices before going live, and test the exact recovery process on the PC and encoder you use. After any reboot, verify the encoder, YouTube Live Control Room, and viewer-facing page separately.
Before the stream: reduce the chance of an update restart
Windows may need to restart to finish installing an update. In Windows 11, Microsoft describes pausing updates temporarily and scheduling a restart for a convenient time; it also recommends setting active hours so automatic restarts happen when the device is not being used. These controls reduce the chance of an interruption, but they do not permanently disable security updates. Updates may need to be installed when a pause ends. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
- Set active hours: Open Windows Update settings and choose hours that cover the full broadcast window, including setup and teardown. The precise labels and available controls can vary by Windows release and organizational policy.
- Review restart notices: Before opening the YouTube event, check Windows Update for a pending restart or update that needs attention. Schedule a required restart outside the broadcast window where the available controls allow it.
- Allow time for updates: If an update is already waiting to finish, restart and complete setup before the stream rather than relying on the PC to remain available indefinitely.
What Windows sign-in does—and does not—restore
Microsoft documents Automatic Restart Sign-On (ARSO), which can sign in the last interactive user after certain Windows Update restarts and then lock the session. Whether it applies depends on factors such as Windows version, account and device-management context, and policy. It is not a promise that a streaming app will reopen, select the right scene or media, reconnect to the network, or restart the YouTube broadcast. Read Microsoft’s ARSO documentation for the documented conditions.
After a reboot, treat these as separate checks: Windows session availability, network access, encoder operation, and the live event’s status on YouTube. An encoder window being open does not prove that it is sending video or that the intended event is live.

Recover the broadcast after the PC restarts
Do not assume the same live event continued through the reboot. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains that an encoder sends a feed using a server URL and stream key, while its settings may allow auto-start and auto-stop. Those settings do not establish that the encoder will recover this particular Windows restart or resume the same event. Keep the stream key private: it is used to send the feed to YouTube. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live encoder settings.
- Wait for Windows to finish any update setup and confirm that the intended user session is available.
- Confirm the PC has network access. Do not treat an open encoder as evidence that the connection is working.
- Open or inspect the encoder. Check that it has the correct scene or media source and that it is sending both video and audio.
- Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Check its current state, preview, and stream-health messages before deciding whether to start or restart anything.
- When possible, open the intended watch page from a separate device or browser. Confirm that the audience can see the expected feed and that the event’s access settings are correct.
- If YouTube shows that the event has ended or the feed is not arriving, follow the state shown in Live Control Room. A deliberate restart or a new event may be needed; do not promise viewers that the original broadcast has resumed until the viewer-facing page confirms it.
Should you enable automatic sign-in?
Automatic sign-in can make an unattended PC easier to access after a restart, but it weakens the protection of the sign-in screen. Keep it distinct from ARSO: ARSO is documented for qualifying Windows Update restarts and locks the session, whereas Sysinternals Autologon configures Windows’ general automatic-logon mechanism.

Microsoft warns about Autologon: “Although the password is encrypted in the registry as an LSA secret, a user with administrative rights can easily retrieve and decrypt it.” See Microsoft Sysinternals Autologon. Consider who can physically access the computer, who has administrator rights, whether the device contains sensitive information, and whether workplace or school policy permits automatic logon before using it.
Test the complete restart and recovery path
Before relying on the setup for a children’s broadcast, test it when an interruption will not matter. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup, checking the Live Control Room preview before starting, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance also describes failover tests such as stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet to confirm that playback moves to a backup encoder. A single-PC setup should be tested on that actual PC, account, encoder, network, and event workflow; do not infer successful automatic recovery from a different configuration. - Record what happens at each stage: Windows sign-in, network return, encoder launch or reconnection, YouTube event status, and viewer playback.
- Check the intended watch page from a viewer’s perspective, not only the local encoder preview.
- Repeat the test after changes to Windows, the encoder, account policy, or event setup that could affect recovery.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a guarantee that viewers stay connected or that a stream interrupted by a reboot resumes seamlessly. Check the event and viewer page after recovery. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
Choose a recovery approach that fits the household setup

A UPS addresses power loss more directly than a planned Windows Update restart. Replacing a PC or adding a capture card, microphone, or camera does not by itself solve the restart-and-relaunch problem.
