You can minimize OBS to the system tray while it continues encoding a prerecorded video for YouTube. Minimizing hides the interface; it does not make the stream more reliable or prevent a computer sleep, power or network interruption, OBS crash, or YouTube disconnection. Set up the loop, confirm the YouTube preview and stream health, then minimize OBS only after the stream is active.
Set up OBS to play the church recording continuously
- Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the scheduled encoder stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. The key is a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Keep it private and out of screenshots.
- Add the recording to the active scene. In OBS, add the video as a Media Source. Enable Loop to repeat a single file. If the service uses a playlist, add it as a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist.
- Check source visibility and playback. Keep the Media Source or VLC Video visible in the scene being sent to YouTube. OBS documents a VLC visibility behavior whose default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Test the playlist’s end-to-start transition, picture and audio before the service.
- Check video and audio in the preview. Confirm that the right scene and recording appear in YouTube Live Control Room, and that the audio is audible and suitable. Do not wait until the congregation is expecting the stream to discover a muted source or an incorrect scene.
Minimize OBS without stopping the encoder
Once OBS is sending the stream and the YouTube preview is correct, minimize the application to the system tray. OBS documentation lists the launch parameter --minimize-to-tray to start minimized and --startstreaming to start streaming automatically. These options can be used for launch automation, but test them on the church’s computer before relying on them during a service. Starting minimized is not a substitute for checking that OBS actually connected and is sending the intended content.
For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Check the preview before selecting Go live. Minimizing OBS is a display behavior only: separately check the computer’s sleep and power settings and the stability of its network connection.
Monitor the stream and end it deliberately
- Keep a person responsible for checking audio and video throughout the service. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of stream quality.
- Test the public watch page, including on a mobile device, so you know what viewers see and hear.
- If you have a backup encoder, test the failover plan before the service rather than assuming the backup will take over.
- At the end, use YouTube’s End Stream control and stop sending content from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is not a guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
Troubleshoot common failures
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is minimized, but the stream is not reaching YouTube. | Minimizing does not establish or verify a connection; the stream may not have started or YouTube may have disconnected. | Restore OBS and check whether it is streaming. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health, then reconnect or restart the encoder as needed. |
| The stream is live, but the recording stops at the end. | Looping is not enabled or the source is configured incorrectly. | For one file, check the Media Source’s Loop option. For a playlist, check VLC Video’s Loop Playlist option. Test the transition before the service. |
| The video disappears when changing scenes or hiding a source. | The source is no longer visible; VLC Video’s documented visibility behavior can stop playback when hidden. | Keep the content source visible in the active scene and verify the behavior with the church’s scene setup. |
| The stream ends after the computer has been left unattended. | Minimization does not prevent sleep, shutdown, loss of power, network failure or an OBS exit. | Check operating-system power settings, power availability, network stability and OBS status. Make an end-to-end test under the conditions expected during the service. |
| YouTube does not accept the encoder feed. | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the stream key may have been changed. | Compare OBS’s configured URL and key with the scheduled stream in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as private and never post it publicly. |
When to consider a different setup
If the church’s computer-and-OBS arrangement is unreliable, compare alternatives against the exact unattended workflow you need: whether the device or service can play your prerecorded file or playlist without a computer, send it to the specific scheduled YouTube stream, handle your audio and video formats, recover after an interruption, and let someone check stream health. YouTube’s verified encoder listings do not by themselves establish that a particular device supports this unattended prerecorded use case. Confirm the exact model and workflow before buying hardware.
