Short answer: Don’t rely on YouTube to create a complete replay of one uninterrupted 24/7 stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you want dependable replays, plan shorter sessions; if your concern is older replays taking up space on your channel, change their visibility or delete them in YouTube Studio.
What YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance means
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is an archive-capture risk, not a guaranteed maximum replay size or a storage quota. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be assumed to produce one complete YouTube replay.
If preserving replays matters, divide the broadcast into sessions shorter than 12 hours. This is a practical way to keep each session within YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee that every stream will be captured. See YouTube’s archive guidance and encoder livestream instructions.
Choose what to do with each existing replay
Decide based on whether viewers should still find the session, whether you want an online copy retained, and whether you need a separate backup before removing it.

- Keep it public when the replay should remain discoverable.
- Change its visibility when you want to retain the replay on YouTube but no longer make it public. YouTube Studio offers visibility controls; select the privacy setting you intend and save.
- Delete it when you no longer need an online copy. Deletion is permanent, so preserve any copy you want to keep first.
Changing visibility or deleting a replay affects its availability on YouTube; neither action compresses the source recording. YouTube’s cited guidance documents these controls, but does not specify age-based automatic retention or bulk deletion.
Change visibility or delete an archive in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content → Live.
- Find the past livestream. Open its details to change visibility, or open the More menu and select Delete.
- For a visibility change, choose the intended setting and save. For deletion, check that you selected the correct replay and that you do not need its online copy.
YouTube documents these archive controls in Archive live streams. Its guidance also says streams are uploaded by default and suggests organizing replays and highlights into playlists; see Promote your live stream.

Keep a local backup when you may need the recording
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A separate copy can preserve a session before you delete its YouTube replay. Check that the local file is intact and that its size is growing while the recording is in progress. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams. See its streaming tips.
A local drive is one possible place to keep a backup, but it does not reduce the size of a replay stored on YouTube. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a drive model, storage capacity, or paid backup service.

Estimate local recording storage from your actual bitrate
YouTube’s cited guidance does not give a storage-per-hour estimate or a target bitrate for music-only streams. To estimate a local recording, use the recording’s actual bitrate and the planned duration rather than assuming a universal size:
Approximate storage in bytes = bitrate in bits per second Ă— recording seconds Ă· 8.

For example, if your local recording averages B bits per second and runs for H hours, estimate B × H × 3,600 ÷ 8 bytes, then allow extra room for file-system overhead and variation. This estimates the local file only; it does not establish YouTube’s stored replay size or any channel storage quota.

For a DIY setup, plan shorter broadcast sessions if you need YouTube replays, and keep a local recording if you need an independent copy. A cloud service can keep uploaded videos playing without a home computer or OBS staying on; it does not change YouTube’s archive behavior or make a long replay more likely to be captured.
