To keep a YouTube lo-fi stream running from a Mac mini, send a continuous program through an encoder such as OBS, prevent the Mac from sleeping while its display is off, and monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. The Mac, encoder, internet connection, and music rights all need to hold up; changing the sleep setting alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need for a continuous stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
- A continuous audio-and-visual program made from material you are authorized to stream.
- An encoder, such as OBS, to send that program to YouTube.
- A Mac mini that stays awake, plus a stable internet connection.
- A way to notice interruptions and take action when the stream stops or degrades.
OBS is free and open source; the cited guidance does not establish that you need a paid encoder. A local setup depends on the Mac and its connection continuing to work. Power, application, or internet failures can interrupt it, and the available guidance does not promise that OBS or macOS will automatically restore every failed broadcast.
Prepare the channel, program, and rights
Check YouTube live access
Before you announce a continuous schedule, check the intended channel in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days to stream live. Confirm the channel’s current eligibility and any restrictions in the control room, since platform requirements and workflows can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Use content cleared for the full use
Build the loop or scene from music and visuals whose owners have granted the rights you need for live streaming, the relevant territories and duration, and any monetization or archived replay. A track being available to you does not, by itself, establish those permissions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. YouTube warns that even licensed material can interrupt a live broadcast if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Ask the rights holder or provider whether your channel needs allowlisting, and confirm that the permission covers continuous live use and any archive. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select a stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or choose the stream you intend to run.
- Get the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder workflow into OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube before using the stream again.
- Configure the program. In OBS, select the scene and media sources that make up the continuous lo-fi program. Confirm that both picture and audio are present and that the intended loop or playlist behaves as expected.
- Start with a test. Use an unlisted or other suitable test stream if available. Start the encoder, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder setup and stream-key guidance is at YouTube live settings. Keep the stream key private even when sharing OBS screenshots or asking someone for troubleshooting help.

Keep the Mac mini awake with its display off
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy on the Mac mini. The exact layout and availability of controls can vary by macOS version and machine.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, if that option is available.
- Set the display to turn off on your preferred schedule; the display can sleep while the Mac remains awake to run the encoder.
- After changing settings, verify the actual stream remains live with the display off.
Apple notes that preventing sleep may increase power consumption. Its desktop Energy guide also covers startup after a power failure and UPS options, but those settings do not guarantee that every OBS, macOS, network, or power interruption will recover automatically. Test stream quality and monitor the broadcast
Test with the resolution, bitrate, scene, and network connection you actually intend to use. There is no universal upload-speed figure established here: stability depends on the connection and the bitrate you choose. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and check both the audio and picture rather than assuming a successful encoder connection means the program is healthy.

YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video during the stream. OBS explains that dropped frames can occur when a connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep playback going. If you see dropped frames or poor stream health, lower the bitrate or output demand and test again on the same connection. OBS guidance: OBS Help.
Plan for failures and recovery
- Internet interruption: The encoder cannot send a live feed without a working connection. Check the network and YouTube stream health, then restart or reconnect the broadcast as needed.
- Mac sleep or shutdown: Confirm the sleep-prevention setting and verify that the Mac is powered on and OBS is running.
- Power loss: A properly sized UPS can provide backup power for the Mac mini and relevant network equipment, but runtime depends on the actual load. Consider whether the Mac’s startup-after-power-failure behavior fits your setup. Neither a UPS nor a startup setting guarantees a restored YouTube broadcast.
- OBS failure or stream disconnect: Arrange a way for someone to notice the stream has stopped and restart or troubleshoot it. The available documentation does not establish reliable unattended restart behavior for every configuration.
- Copyright interruption: Check YouTube’s notices and the rights holder’s Content ID allowlisting requirements; a licensed track may still trigger a live interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.
A wired connection may help avoid some wireless instability, but it is not a guarantee of continuity. Test the complete setup for as long as practical before relying on it unattended.

Common problems and fixes
