To rotate prerecorded sermons in a 24/7 YouTube live stream, set up playback in the encoder—not with YouTube’s viewer-side repeat button. In OBS Studio, loop one recording with a Media Source, or load several recordings into a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS sends that playback to YouTube using the channel’s stream URL and stream key.
Choose what should repeat
YouTube’s repeat controls affect what an individual viewer watches; they do not change the prerecorded video being sent as a live broadcast. The encoder controls the feed, so configure the sermon playback in OBS before sending it to YouTube.
- One sermon: use an OBS Media Source and enable Loop.
- A rotation of sermons: use an OBS VLC Video source, add the recordings in the order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off if the order matters.
Set up OBS to play one or several sermons
Before you begin
- Make sure the recordings are files the computer running OBS can access.
- For the VLC Video source, install VLC. OBS documentation notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Test the recordings and playlist in OBS, including the transition from the last file back to the first. OBS documents looping, but does not promise gapless transitions.
Loop one sermon recording
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene you plan to stream.
- Choose the sermon file and turn on Loop in the source settings.
- Check the OBS preview and listen to the audio to confirm the file plays as expected.
Rotate multiple sermon recordings
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the streaming scene.
- Add the sermon files to the source playlist in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Keep shuffle off if you want a fixed sequence.
- Play through the playlist, paying particular attention to the final-to-first transition, and verify the video and audio before broadcasting.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream: YouTube requires verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide describes the setup.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a credential: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the public broadcast. YouTube’s guide covers connecting an encoder and previewing the feed.
Keep the do-it-yourself stream running
With OBS on a local computer, the stream depends on that computer, its power, the sermon files, and its internet connection remaining available. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring audio and video, and allowing upload bandwidth headroom; a network disruption can break a stream. Follow its live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance for network and stream setup.
- Check that the computer will not sleep or shut down during the broadcast.
- Keep the media files accessible for the entire session.
- Monitor the YouTube preview and the stream’s audio and video rather than assuming the encoder is still sending usable output.
- Test the playlist and stream connection before scheduling a long broadcast.
Plan saved replays around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise archiving for streams longer than 12 hours. If the church needs a saved replay, plan broadcast sessions to end before the 12-hour threshold and restart as needed. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
