If Liquidsoap and the listener-facing stream server are on the VPS you reboot, listeners should expect an interruption. A systemd restart policy can bring a stopped process back after the VPS returns, but it cannot keep that host online while it reboots. To keep a Gurbani stream available during host maintenance, serve listeners from another running system with a working audio source or fallback, or configure and test a standby with traffic failover. Some listeners may still need to reconnect.
First identify what the update will restart
“Update” can mean three different operations, with different consequences for listeners:
- Configuration reload: A supported in-place reload may preserve existing source and listener connections. Whether it does depends on the setting and the installed Liquidsoap version.
- Application or service restart: The stream process stops and starts again. Listeners can lose audio or need to reconnect.
- VPS reboot: Every service on that host becomes unavailable during the reboot. A process manager cannot eliminate this host-level outage.
Before scheduling maintenance, check the provider’s notice and determine whether a reboot is required. There is no established universal downtime figure for VPS updates; use the provider’s estimate or your own measurements rather than promising a fixed interruption.
For configuration changes, reload when the installed setup supports it
Liquidsoap’s Icecast-compatible server documentation says a configuration reload can preserve connected sources and listeners, while also noting that some settings take effect only after a restart. Check the reference for your installed version and the specific setting before choosing reload. The documentation surfaced for this guidance is the project’s 2.5.x development documentation, so do not assume its behavior or examples match every stable installation.

A reload is an option for supported configuration changes; it does not keep the service online through a VPS reboot.
For a single-VPS service restart, make recovery predictable
Liquidsoap recommends running it in the foreground under a service manager, such as systemd on Linux. Its production example uses Restart=always. This helps recover a process after it exits, but does not provide availability while the VPS itself is down.

- Save the current Liquidsoap configuration and note the playlist and media paths the service uses.
- Check that the service is enabled to start at boot, and that its media and configuration will be available after the update.
- Validate an edited script before restarting it:
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq. The path is an example; use the actual path on your host. - If the setting supports it, reload rather than restart. Otherwise schedule the service restart and expect a possible interruption.
- Afterward, check the service manager status, confirm Liquidsoap has connected to the server, and test the public mount URL for audible Gurbani—not merely a running process.
Exact service commands and reload behavior depend on your operating system, service definition, and installed software versions.
For a VPS reboot, keep the listener endpoint independent
Liquidsoap’s documented architecture separates the stream generator from an Icecast server that relays audio to listeners. That separation can help: a listener-facing relay on another independently running host may keep its public endpoint available while the generator VPS is rebooted. But relocating Icecast alone is not enough. The relay must already have a viable audio source or a fallback to play while the generator is unavailable, and listeners must be able to keep using a stable public URL.

Plan and test the full path: what provides audio during maintenance, what happens if that source disappears, and whether the relay continues serving the mount. A fallback mount in Liquidsoap’s Icecast-compatible server can switch sources while listeners remain on a mount, but it does not make a VPS survive its own reboot.
For higher availability, prepare and test a standby
An active-standby design can redirect traffic from a primary host to a ready secondary host. It generally requires a second host, synchronized configuration and content as needed, health checks, and traffic switching supported by the provider. A second VPS by itself does not create failover.

AWS’s floating-IP guidance is specific to AWS architecture, not a feature guaranteed by every VPS provider. It also warns that media endpoints may need to reconnect and active sessions can be dropped unless continuity is engineered separately. Treat standby failover as a way to reduce interruption, not a promise of zero downtime.

Before maintenance
- Classify the operation as configuration reload, service restart, or host reboot.
- Back up the configuration and confirm playlist and media references.
- For a reboot, decide whether to announce a maintenance window or rely on an already tested independent relay or standby.
- Check monitoring that tests the public audio endpoint, not just whether the VPS responds.
After maintenance
- Confirm the VPS and stream service have returned and the service is enabled at boot.
- Verify the source-to-server connection and the public mount.
- Listen to the public URL to confirm audio is present and playing.
- Check monitoring alerts and investigate failures even if the service process appears active.
