How to Install MadVR and MPC-HC on Windows 11 or 10

Install the maintained MPC-HC project on Windows 10 or 11, register madVR safely when its archive provides install.bat, select the renderer, and troubleshoot HDR, colors, and dropped frames without relying on outdated mirrors or unsupported hardware claims.

Short answer: Download MPC-HC from the maintained clsid2/mpc-hc GitHub releases page, install it, obtain madVR only from a verified distribution source, extract it permanently, run its supplied install.bat as administrator when available, and select madVR under Options > Playback > Output. madVR is optional; MPC-HC’s included MPC Video Renderer is the simpler alternative.

What you need before installing

MPC-HC is the media player. madVR is an optional video renderer that can provide more control over scaling, presentation, and HDR-related processing. You can install and use MPC-HC without madVR; the player also includes MPC Video Renderer. For ordinary playback, madVR is not a requirement.

This guide applies to supported 64-bit editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact madVR download source and package version should be verified before publication because the current authoritative distribution details were not confirmed in the available research. Do not download a random repackaged archive simply because it appears in a search result.

Before changing playback components, create a Windows restore point or make sure you have another recoverable backup of the system. A restore point is a sensible precaution, not an MPC-HC requirement. Also confirm that your graphics driver is working normally and that you can approve administrator prompts.

1. Download current MPC-HC from the maintained project

The original MPC-HC project stopped active development after version 1.7.13. The old mpc-hc.org website is therefore historical context, not the current release authority.

Use the maintained clsid2/mpc-hc repository and its official GitHub releases page. The latest stable release identified in the research for this guide is MPC-HC 2.7.1; development builds are listed separately. Check the releases page immediately before installing because version labels can change.

  • Choose the installer or package appropriate for your Windows system.
  • Do not assume that every user needs a 32-bit build. Current 64-bit Windows usage is supported, but a specific older third-party filter may impose its own compatibility requirement.
  • Prefer the stable release unless you specifically need a development-build fix or feature.

2. Install MPC-HC

  1. Run the MPC-HC installer downloaded from the maintained project.
  2. Approve the Windows security prompt if it appears.
  3. Keep the default components unless you have a specific reason to customize them.
  4. Finish the installation and launch MPC-HC.

Installer pages and component names can vary between releases, so focus on the result rather than expecting every screen to look identical: MPC-HC should install, launch, and open its playback and output settings.

3. Obtain and extract madVR carefully

The madVR package should come from a verified, trustworthy distribution source. The current official madVR download page, archive URL, version, and checksum were not confirmed in the research used for this article. Consequently, this guide does not provide an invented download link or version number.

Until the distribution source is independently verified:

  • Avoid unofficial “codec packs,” modified installers, and random file-hosting mirrors.
  • Do not run a batch file from an archive whose provenance you cannot establish.
  • Use the complete madVR archive rather than copying isolated DLL files from it.

The conventional installation procedure documented by community guidance is as follows. Future packages may change their layout, so treat the presence of install.bat as package-dependent rather than guaranteed.

  1. Extract the complete archive to a permanent folder, for example a dedicated folder under C:Program Files or another location you control.
  2. Open the extracted folder and confirm that the registration script, if supplied, is present.
  3. Right-click install.bat and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Leave the madVR folder in place after registration. Do not casually move, rename, or delete it.

Registering madVR does not open it as a separate application. It makes the renderer available to compatible media players such as MPC-HC.

4. Select madVR in MPC-HC

  1. Open MPC-HC.
  2. Go to Options > Playback > Output.
  3. Find the video-renderer selection and choose madVR.
  4. Apply the change and restart playback. Restarting MPC-HC as well is sensible if the renderer was registered while the player was open.

The maintained MPC-HC project documents this output location and lists madVR and MPC Video Renderer as supported renderer choices for HDR playback. The two renderers are alternatives in this menu; installing both does not combine them into a single renderer.

5. Start with conservative madVR settings

Do not begin by enabling every demanding scaling, sharpening, and image-processing option. Start with the default or conservative settings, play a representative file, and check whether playback is smooth. Then change one demanding option at a time.

Watch for dropped frames, rendering delays, and uneven presentation. The appropriate settings depend on resolution, refresh rate, scaling algorithms, image-processing features, HDR mode, driver behavior, and display configuration. There is no universal minimum GPU for madVR.

madVR is selected for its control and processing options, not because it guarantees a better picture in every system. The source quality, scaling path, display, GPU, and configuration all affect the result.

MadVR versus MPC Video Renderer

Choose When it makes sense
madVR You specifically want its processing and configuration controls and have enough GPU headroom for the settings you plan to use.
MPC Video Renderer You prefer the renderer included with MPC-HC and a simpler, more self-contained setup.

For HDR playback, the maintained MPC-HC project identifies either MPC Video Renderer or madVR as a supported route. Installing madVR is therefore optional. Avoid assuming that HDR passthrough, tone mapping, Dolby Vision behavior, or automatic display switching will work identically across every Windows version, graphics driver, display, and renderer configuration.

Troubleshooting

MadVR does not appear in the renderer list

  • Confirm that the entire archive was extracted rather than opened and run from a compressed view.
  • Confirm that install.bat was run with Run as administrator, if that script was included.
  • Confirm that the registered madVR folder still exists at the same location.
  • Close and restart MPC-HC after registration.
  • Check whether you installed an incomplete or incompatible package, particularly if it came from an unofficial mirror.
  • Check compatibility with any legacy third-party filters or components you added.

Do not repeatedly run unknown batch files from unrelated download sites. If the archive source is questionable, remove it and obtain a verified package before troubleshooting further.

Playback stutters or drops frames

  1. Return madVR processing to conservative settings.
  2. Disable expensive scaling or enhancement features one at a time.
  3. Check GPU utilization, temperature, and graphics-driver status.
  4. Compare the same file with MPC Video Renderer. If playback becomes smooth, the problem is likely related to madVR settings, rendering headroom, or the driver path rather than the media file itself.
  5. Match the display refresh rate to the content when appropriate. There is no single refresh-rate setting that is correct for every file and display.

A more powerful GPU may provide additional headroom, but demanding madVR performance cannot be reduced to one universal GPU recommendation. Resolution, scaling quality, processing features, refresh rate, and HDR configuration matter.

Video looks washed out or has incorrect colors

Treat this as a signal-path problem rather than changing random color controls. Check:

  • the renderer’s output-range configuration;
  • the Windows display mode and HDR state;
  • the GPU driver’s video-output settings;
  • the display’s input range or picture mode; and
  • the connection and display configuration.

Do not apply a universal “use 0–255” or “use 16–235” rule without knowing the complete source, renderer, GPU, and display signal path. A range mismatch can cause crushed blacks, clipped highlights, or a washed-out image.

HDR does not activate

  • Confirm that the display actually supports HDR.
  • Check whether Windows HDR needs to be enabled for your chosen workflow.
  • Update or reinstall the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official website if the driver is malfunctioning.
  • Confirm that MPC-HC is using the intended renderer.
  • Review the renderer’s HDR behavior and the display’s current input mode.

Automatic HDR switching is not guaranteed across every combination of Windows, driver, display, media format, and renderer. Verify the behavior with a known HDR file and your exact hardware rather than assuming that selecting madVR alone will change the display mode.

Windows or driver problems continue outside MPC-HC

Install the graphics driver primarily from the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel website. An optional driver-maintenance utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and provides documented backup and rollback features, but it is not required to install MPC-HC or madVR and it should not replace the manufacturer’s driver source as your first choice.

If the instability extends beyond video playback—for example, general application crashes, low disk space, or broader Windows-maintenance issues—an optional Windows maintenance tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may be relevant. It does not install or configure madVR, improve image quality directly, or replace antivirus protection.

Final verification checklist

  • MPC-HC came from the maintained clsid2/mpc-hc project or its official releases page.
  • You distinguished the current maintained project from the legacy 1.7.13-era MPC-HC website.
  • The madVR archive came from a source whose provenance you verified.
  • The complete archive was extracted to a permanent folder.
  • The supplied registration script, if present, was run as administrator.
  • The madVR folder was not moved after registration.
  • madVR was selected under Options > Playback > Output.
  • Playback works with conservative settings before you increase processing quality.
  • You checked dropped frames and rendering smoothness with a representative file.
  • You selected either madVR or MPC Video Renderer according to your needs; you did not expect both to operate simultaneously.

Sources and version caution

MPC-HC’s supported operating systems, renderer location, and HDR renderer choices are documented by the maintained project. Its release page is the appropriate place to check the current stable version. The original MPC-HC website should be treated as an archive. The install.bat registration sequence described above comes from community installation guidance and may not apply unchanged to every future madVR package.
