Sequential reads of large video files may suit HDDs; random or metadata-heavy work may benefit from SSD or NVMe. No drive type, cache percentage, or RAID level guarantees smoother playback without workload-specific testing.
What storage performance means for a streaming server
Streaming involves the continuous delivery of media segments from a server while a client consumes them, as defined in IETF RFC 9317 (2022). Storage is one part of that delivery path, alongside the controller and bus, filesystem, host, and network. Faster drives will not fix a network bottleneck, and a fast network cannot compensate for a saturated storage path.
Start by identifying the actual workload: how many viewers may read at once, whether they access the same files repeatedly, whether the server also ingests or transcodes media, and what interruption or recovery time is acceptable. RFC 9317’s considerations generally apply to both live media and previously recorded media on demand; the storage needs still depend on how the particular server handles each.

- CPU and memory utilization, including cache behavior where available.
- Network utilization on the relevant server links.
- Playback symptoms such as slow starts or stalls.
Storage performance is commonly evaluated through latency, throughput, and IOPS. Some storage systems also distinguish baseline performance from temporary burst performance, so check which one a reported measurement represents.
Estimate the load the storage must serve
For a first-order read estimate, add the media bitrates of simultaneous streams whose data is not being served from cache, then allow for protocol and container overhead. Include concurrent ingest or transcode writes if the server performs them. Compare the resulting demand with measured sustainable storage and network capacity. Leave capacity for cache misses, spikes, maintenance, and rebuild activity; the appropriate margin depends on the server, and there is no universal percentage for an unspecified workload.

Identify the limiting part of the path
Storage deserves attention when its latency climbs or throughput reaches its limit while CPU and network still have headroom. Investigate the drive, controller or bus, filesystem, queueing, and cache in that case. If storage is mostly idle while the network is saturated, adding faster drives will not remove the delivery cap. AWS’s Volume Gateway guidance is one example of end-to-end diagnosis: it identifies CPU, RAM, cache or upload-disk throughput, and both network legs as possible limits in that service. Those checks are useful as a diagnostic model, not a hardware prescription for every server.
Separate RAM cache from physical-drive performance
Repeated reads may be served from the operating system’s page cache instead of the storage device. Compare a warm-cache result with a test that bypasses the page cache when measuring the underlying storage. NVIDIA’s benchmarking guidance for GPUDirect Storage explains this measurement issue: page-cache results can show much higher throughput and lower latency than the storage itself. Use test tools and options suitable for your operating system and workload; do not treat a memory-cached result as a drive benchmark.

Choose storage for the I/O pattern
There is no independent universal HDD-versus-SSD benchmark for this unspecified streaming workload. Pick a storage class from measured latency, sustained throughput, access pattern, capacity, interface, endurance, and cost, then validate the choice using the same workload that revealed the bottleneck.
| Storage approach | Where it can fit | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity HDDs | Large libraries read mostly as sequential media files, especially when capacity cost matters. | Measure sustained throughput per drive and concurrent reads at peak load. Spindle contention and rebuilds can affect performance. Microsoft documents HDD capacity paired with faster cache in Storage Spaces Direct. |
| SATA or SAS SSD | Workloads that need lower latency or more random I/O than HDDs can provide within the controller and endurance budget. | Check sustained performance, interface limits, thermal behavior, and write endurance if ingest or transcoding writes heavily. |
| NVMe SSD | High-throughput or low-latency local storage, as a cache layer or all-flash storage where measurements support it. | Check PCIe lanes and topology, sustained rather than burst results, endurance, cooling, and the rest of the host path. Microsoft describes NVMe as offering higher IOPS and throughput, and lower latency, than supported drive types other than PMem in its Storage Spaces Direct documentation. |
| Flash cache plus HDD capacity | A library with a repeatedly accessed hot set and a larger, less frequently read collection. | Measure cache hits and misses and size for active data. Cache helps only to the extent it serves the workload’s hot set. |
| Striped or RAID 10 arrangement | Parallel I/O when member-drive throughput is demonstrably the limit and capacity and fault-tolerance needs fit the layout. | Confirm the expected throughput on the actual server and account for usable capacity, failures, and recovery. AWS discusses RAID 10 in its Storage Gateway performance guidance; that service-specific example does not establish a universal best layout. |
Western Digital’s 2026 case study reports that an unnamed media-streaming company targeted at least 300 MB/s sustained sequential throughput per drive and describes the Ultrastar Data Center HC590 at up to 26 TB. These are a customer-specific target and a vendor-reported product maximum, not a universal drive requirement or independent proof that this model suits another server. Size cache from the active working set
Cache capacity should reflect which files are actively and repeatedly read, rather than a fixed percentage applied to every server. A cache smaller than the hot set can churn; a cache larger than useful active data may add cost without improving playback. Measure the hit and miss rate before expanding flash.
Microsoft’s Storage Spaces Direct guidance says the cache should accommodate the active working set. In that product context, it offers 10% of HDD capacity as a fair starting point—for example, 1.6 TB of cache for 16 TB of HDDs—and closer to 5% for some all-flash configurations—for example, 1.5 TB for 28.8 TB of SSDs. These are platform-specific starting examples, not general cache-sizing rules for a streaming server.

Test each change and preserve a rollback path
- Save the baseline. Note the workload, test duration, stream count, throughput, latency, IOPS, CPU, memory, and network measurements.
- Change one main variable. Examples include moving a measured hot set to flash, changing an array layout, or adjusting cache allocation. Avoid changing several components at once if you need to know which helped.
- Repeat the same sustained workload. Compare storage throughput and latency, IOPS, playback starts and stalls, and CPU and network utilization. Where measurements are available, compare p50, p95, and p99 latency as well as averages.
- Check the result at peak-like concurrency. A change that helps one reader or a short burst may not help simultaneous streams over a longer run.
- Keep a rollback route. Document the previous configuration and retain a way to restore it if the change worsens performance or recovery behavior.
Use a CDN when audience delivery is the bottleneck
A CDN and RAID solve different problems. Striping can raise aggregate disk throughput when storage devices are the measured limit, while a CDN can serve cached requests closer to viewers and reduce repeated work at the origin. Google Cloud’s media guidance recommends routing customer reads through a CDN for scalable VoD and live delivery; caching, origin shielding, and request coalescing can reduce origin requests. Assess cacheability, freshness, and live-segment behavior for the actual setup. A CDN reduces origin pressure for public delivery; it does not replace a suitable origin server.
Plan reliability separately from speed
A 24/7 service needs a recovery plan as well as enough peak read performance. Decide how to handle drive failures, rebuild or resynchronization time, spare capacity, backups, and configuration recovery. RAID can provide particular redundancy and performance properties, but it is not a backup. Faster storage by itself does not make a server highly available, and there is no universal availability design for a self-hosted streaming server.
Microsoft’s Storage Spaces Direct guidance says approximately 400 TB is the maximum recommended storage capacity per server in that product context, noting that larger capacity can lengthen resynchronization after downtime or a reboot. This is not a general capacity limit for streaming servers; it illustrates why recovery time matters alongside raw capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than operate your own media server, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
