Use YouTube Studio’s Audience heatmap to find promising windows, then compare ad revenue and viewer outcomes across equivalent periods. The heatmap shows when your viewers are active across YouTube; it does not identify the hours when a particular continuous live stream earned the most. YouTube’s documented Analytics date views do not establish a definitive hourly ad-revenue ranking for one 24/7 video.
What “best-performing” means for your stream
Decide what you want to improve before comparing times. If the goal is total ad earnings, use estimated ad revenue when that metric is available. If comparing yield, define the rate and its denominator clearly, and keep it separate from total earnings.
- Estimated ad revenue: the ad-specific earnings measure to use when available.
- Estimated monetized playbacks: playbacks that included at least one ad.
- Ad impressions: individual ads shown; a playback can include more than one.
- CPM and playback-based CPM: advertiser-cost measures, not the creator’s earnings after YouTube’s revenue share.
- RPM: creator revenue per thousand views that can include revenue sources beyond ads, so it is not a pure ad-earnings measure.
A high CPM alone does not establish that a period generated the most ad revenue: there may have been fewer monetized playbacks. If you are testing ad-break timing, compare ad revenue per hour alongside watch time or average view duration, rather than optimizing only for CPM.
Use the Audience heatmap to choose candidate windows
- In YouTube Studio, open Analytics > Audience.
- Find When your viewers are on YouTube. The report covers activity across YouTube over the previous 28 days and can help with live-stream planning. See YouTube’s explanation of audience reports.
- Note candidate days and times, and account for your viewers’ time zones and geography when translating the heatmap into your chosen clock time.
- Treat those windows as hypotheses to test, not as a report of your 24/7 stream’s ad earnings.
The heatmap is not limited to people watching your continuous live stream; audience reports can include viewers of different channel formats. YouTube also identifies geography and advertiser demand among factors that affect ad metrics. Use Live performance reports for stream-specific audience context rather than treating general YouTube activity as stream revenue data. YouTube’s live metrics guidance describes live performance measures and reports.

Compare like-for-like periods
Build a simple observation log in a spreadsheet or other record-keeping tool. Compare the same weekday and clock-time window across multiple weeks where possible. YouTube does not prescribe a particular sample size or statistical test for this exercise; more comparable observations make it easier to distinguish a recurring pattern from a one-off change.

Compare live streams with live streams, not with videos in a different format. YouTube’s live reports are associated with video IDs, and its processed Analytics data can differ from Live Control Room figures. Live analytics can be exported as CSV. Check that ads are enabled—and interpret delivery carefully
Confirm that monetization is enabled for the stream. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is on; mid-rolls can be automatic or manual. An ad opportunity or inserted break does not mean every viewer received an ad. YouTube’s systems decide whether a slot gets an ad based on multiple factors, including viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
Automatic mid-roll settings include low, medium, and high frequency, and creators can also insert breaks manually. YouTube says automatic mode can snooze mid-rolls during high engagement and pause them for some member interactions. More breaks are not automatically better; assess earnings and viewer outcomes together.

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. This was an aggregate comparison between channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled and those without, across 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a causal guarantee or a forecast for an individual stream.

YouTube’s Advanced Mode supports custom reports, comparisons, metrics, filters, and exports. Its documented chart date views are daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly—not hourly. The public documentation does not establish an hourly estimated-ad-revenue breakdown inside a single continuous 24/7 video. Unless you have separately validated an hourly data source for your account, report daily comparisons or audience-activity patterns; do not label them exact hourly earnings. Metric availability can differ by report. YouTube’s live monetization guidance describes viewing a live-stream revenue breakdown using the Live filter, while its live metrics guidance says interaction and revenue reports are unavailable when filtering for live in that report context. Follow the options shown in the specific report you are using instead of assuming every metric appears in every Live-filtered view.
Revenue also takes time to settle: YouTube says revenue data can take two days to appear in Analytics, and estimated revenue may be adjusted later, including after a week and in the middle of the following month. Compare periods consistently and distinguish estimates from finalized earnings. See YouTube’s revenue guidance.

Why a busy hour may not earn more
More active viewers can create more opportunities for views and ads, but activity does not guarantee more monetized playbacks, higher advertiser bids, or higher creator earnings. YouTube identifies geography, time of year, ad formats, advertiser targeting, recent ad exposure, Premium status, and ad availability among factors that can affect ad metrics. Ad slots are not guaranteed, and shifting or adding breaks to a busy period is not a promise of higher earnings.
