To host an HLS live stream, send a live source to an encoder and packager, publish the resulting playlists and media segments from an HTTP origin, deliver them to viewers—often through a CDN—and give a compatible player the viewer-facing M3U8 playlist URL. A CDN delivers the stream; it does not, by itself, encode your live input.
What you need to host HLS
HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) breaks a live presentation into media segments described by playlists, which players request over HTTP. Apple’s HLS documentation describes a system built around ordinary web servers and CDNs, with playback adapting to network conditions. Apple’s HLS documentation explains the format and deployment options.
- A live source and ingest route: for example, a camera production chain or another live feed sent to an encoder or streaming service.
- Encoding and packaging: creates the HLS playlists and segments; adaptive-bitrate (ABR) output can provide multiple renditions for playback across varying connection speeds.
- An origin: the web server or packaging service that makes the live HLS output available.
- Viewer delivery: the origin can serve viewers directly, or a CDN can distribute requests closer to them.
- A player: a webpage or client app that receives the viewer-facing M3U8 playlist URL.
Apple’s simplest webpage pattern uses an HTML5 <video> element with an M3U8 playlist as its source. Browser support and playback behavior vary by target environment, so test the actual player and devices your audience will use.
Build the stream step by step
1. Choose the source and ingest path
Decide what will produce the live feed and how it will reach your encoder or managed service. AWS’s live-streaming reference solution supports RTP, RTMP, HLS, or MediaConnect ingest. Those are options within that AWS architecture, not a universal list for every encoder. OBS can also send to a custom streaming server; check that your chosen destination accepts the protocol and configuration you plan to use. 2. Encode and package HLS
Your HLS workflow must turn the incoming feed into playlists and media segments. For ABR playback, create multiple output renditions so a compatible player can select a suitable stream as network conditions change. In AWS’s managed example, MediaLive handles real-time encoding and MediaPackage packages the output. OBS is another software option for sending an encoded feed to a custom destination; hardware encoding is available when the computer supports it, but it is not a universal requirement.
3. Publish the origin
Serve the live playlists and segments from an HLS-compatible web server or packaging service. A simple setup can use an ordinary web server; Apple also identifies CDNs as a hosting and delivery option. In the AWS reference architecture, MediaPackage acts as the origin and packages the incoming ABR output.

4. Add a CDN when your delivery needs call for one
A CDN can distribute viewer requests without taking over the encoder’s role. AWS’s reference chain places CloudFront in front of MediaPackage. Configure routing for both parent manifests and media segments, and set up the origin authorization that protects the MediaPackage endpoint. AWS’s CloudFront live streaming configuration guide covers the relevant delivery configuration.
For Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) with MediaPackage and CloudFront, AWS says the manifest cache policy must forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters used for blocking playlist requests. This requirement is specific to that documented path; verify the corresponding requirements for any other origin, CDN, and player combination.

5. Point the player at the viewer-facing playlist
Give the player the M3U8 URL intended for viewers, which may be the CDN URL rather than the origin address. A minimal HTML pattern is:

This shows the basic source relationship, not a guarantee that every browser will play HLS natively. Choose and test a player appropriate to your audience’s browsers, devices, and app environment.

6. Validate the stream before sharing it
- Run Apple’s HLS stream validator to simulate playback and check playlist and segment conformance.
- Open the viewer-facing URL in your chosen player and confirm that both video and audio play.
- Test on the target devices and networks, including the access path viewers will actually use.
- If access is restricted, verify that authorized viewers can play and unauthorized requests are denied.
Choose managed cloud or self-managed hosting
A managed pipeline can combine ingest, encoding, packaging, origin protection, and CDN delivery. AWS’s example uses MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront, with two feeds for ingest redundancy. That is one reference architecture, not the only way to host HLS. A self-managed setup can send a feed from software such as OBS to a custom destination and use an independently managed HTTP origin or CDN, but the cited setup guides do not establish a complete self-hosted recipe or capacity limits.

Before choosing, establish your ingest and output protocol needs, expected audience scale and geography, redundancy expectations, latency target, access controls, and who will operate the system. Estimate costs using your own region, stream duration, bitrate ladder, audience, origin requests and storage, CDN delivery, encoding, and monitoring requirements; no scenario-specific current total is established here.

Latency, caching, and access control
Standard HLS and LL-HLS
Standard live HLS updates a playlist and serves media segments over HTTP. LL-HLS needs compatible behavior across the origin, CDN, and player. In AWS’s MediaPackage and CloudFront setup, forward _HLS_msn and _HLS_part as described above. Do not assume a specific glass-to-glass delay: it depends on the complete configuration and should be measured in your actual deployment.
Protect private streams at the delivery layer
A public M3U8 URL can be retrieved by anyone who has access to it. For protected delivery, design authorization into the origin and CDN path instead of treating an obscure playlist name as authentication. AWS’s reference architecture restricts origin access using a CloudFront CDN identifier and recommends header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization. The cited guides do not provide a complete general-purpose DRM recipe.
Troubleshooting common HLS failures
- The player cannot load the stream: check that the player uses the viewer-facing M3U8 URL, that the origin or CDN routes the parent manifest and segment requests, and that access controls allow the request.
- The playlist loads but playback stalls or ends: inspect whether the live playlist continues updating and whether its referenced media segments are available from the same delivery path.
- Video plays but audio does not: verify the encoded output and packaging, then test the playlist in the target player and on another supported device.
- Playback fails only behind CloudFront with LL-HLS: in the MediaPackage/CloudFront configuration, confirm the manifest cache policy forwards
_HLS_msnand_HLS_part. - Some viewers cannot play the stream: test the selected player on those devices and browsers; the M3U8 URL alone does not ensure identical HLS support everywhere.
- Authorized viewers are blocked: check the origin authorization and CDN configuration together. Conversely, if a restricted stream is publicly accessible, review the origin path and access policy rather than relying on an unlisted URL.
