You can run a nonstop YouTube playlist stream from AWS Lightsail by hosting an encoder on a Linux virtual server, feeding it compatible video, and connecting it to YouTube Live with an RTMPS stream URL and key. The VPS keeps the encoding process off your home computer, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the instance, network, media, encoder supervision, and YouTube ingestion all have to keep working.

Before you start: check the channel and playlist

Make sure the channel can livestream

YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before you provision a server.

Clear the rights to every item

You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast every video and audio item, including music. YouTube’s live copyright guidance explains that third-party matches can replace the live picture, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to an allowlist. Check YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyright issues and confirm permissions before scheduling a continuous playlist.

Choose a Lightsail plan for your actual workload

Lightsail bundles vCPU, memory, SSD storage, and a monthly data-transfer allowance. AWS’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists Linux/Unix bundles starting at $5 per month with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. Prices and allowances can change; check current Lightsail pricing for your region and plan before launching.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That starting plan is not a proven minimum for a 24/7 playlist encoder. Copying compatible media without re-encoding has a different CPU profile from live re-encoding, and the required resources also depend on output resolution, frame rate, codec, and process overhead. The available official sources do not establish a tested Lightsail size for this exact workload. Start with a plan appropriate to your chosen encoding mode, test representative content, and monitor CPU, memory, network, and transfer use before relying on it unattended.

Create and prepare the Lightsail instance

  1. Create a Linux/Unix instance. In the AWS Lightsail console, create an instance in the region you intend to use and select a plan after considering the workload and transfer allowance. Keep the operating system and encoder choice consistent with the instructions for the software you install.
  2. Secure access and credentials. Restrict server administration to trusted access. Do not put your YouTube stream key in a public script, screenshot, or log. Treat it like a password and reset it if exposed.
  3. Make the playlist available to the encoder. Store or transfer media in a location the server can read. Check that files are complete, supported by the chosen encoder, and ordered as intended. Include only content you have the right to stream.
  4. Choose whether to copy or re-encode. If the files already match YouTube’s accepted output settings, a workflow that copies the encoded streams may reduce encoding work. If you need to change format, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, the server must encode in real time; confirm the instance can sustain that workload with your actual media before leaving it running.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

Get the stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
  3. Enter the URL and key in your encoder’s streaming destination settings. Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS for normal encoder ingestion.
  4. Keep the key private. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address for your stream. Do not expose it in a publicly accessible configuration, command history, or output log. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Match the output to YouTube’s encoder guidance

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the official table for the settings you actually choose rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those figures apply to those specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other combinations and any updated recommendations.

Test with the real playlist

Before leaving the stream unattended, test representative video motion and audio, confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution and sound, and check stream health in the Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A playlist that looks fine in a short test can still expose issues later, such as a missing file, an incompatible item, or a process that stops at the end of playback.

Keep the playlist running and plan for recovery

A nonstop broadcast requires more than starting the encoder once. Configure the playback workflow to repeat the intended playlist, and decide how you will detect and recover from a stalled or exited process. Process supervision, restart behavior, and alerting are operational design choices: configure and verify them for your specific encoder and server rather than assuming Lightsail or YouTube provides them automatically.

A VPS moves the encoder away from your home computer; it does not remove dependence on the instance, network path, media availability, encoder process, or YouTube ingestion. AWS’s highly available live-video architecture uses additional managed Media Services and CloudFront components. That is a different architecture and cost profile from a single Lightsail instance sending directly to YouTube; see AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS solution overview.

Do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a nonstop broadcast

YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a continuous broadcast, keep a separate recording if retaining the content matters. YouTube’s operational tips recommend checking archive integrity and confirming that a local archive file is growing; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. See YouTube’s archive guidance and live-streaming tips.

A separate local recording is a distinct backup task, not a requirement for the Lightsail encoder to send a stream. If you choose to keep a local copy, make sure its storage capacity and retention plan fit the recording length; an external SSD is one optional storage choice.

Understand copyright and monetization separately

Having permission to stream material does not automatically make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy covers live streams and can treat repetitive or mass-produced content as ineligible; reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. A stream can have the necessary rights and still fail monetization review, while the absence of a copyright claim does not establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies for the current rules.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the stream URL and key are correct, the stream is selected in the Live Control Room, and the encoder is using a supported ingestion method. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
  • The stream drops or the encoder stops: Check the instance, network connection, encoder logs, media availability, and stream health. Verify the restart and alerting behavior you configured instead of assuming a VPS automatically restarts the broadcast.
  • Video stutters or output settings are wrong: Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s recommended codec, CBR, frame-rate, keyframe, and bitrate guidance for the selected resolution. If re-encoding, check whether the instance can sustain the workload.
  • The playlist ends instead of looping: Check the encoder or playback configuration for repeat behavior, then test from the final item back to the first with the actual playlist.
  • A live archive is missing or incomplete: Do not treat YouTube’s archive as the sole copy for a stream longer than 12 hours. Check any local recording and its file growth and integrity.
  • A stream is interrupted over third-party content: Review the rights and channel-allowlist status for the matched material. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.

Or let it run in the cloud
