To get started with Streamlabs Desktop, install the version for your computer, complete the first-run setup, create a scene, add capture and audio sources, choose settings your computer and connection can handle, then test before you stream or record. Streamlabs’ setup guidance has changed over time and its published operating-system requirements conflict, so check the current installer and support information before installing.

1. Check compatibility and download Streamlabs Desktop

Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimum operating systems, and Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later as recommended. Its other listed recommendations are 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB or more recommended), 10 GB of storage minimum (a 512 GB SSD or larger recommended), an Intel Core i5 11th or 12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or higher, and Nvidia RTX 20/30 series or AMD RX 5000/6000 series graphics. Integrated graphics are listed as the minimum graphics option. See the Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide.

Those OS figures differ from Streamlabs’ separately published system requirements article, dated April 25, 2025. That older page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12+ as minimum and recommends Windows 10 or macOS 10.15+. Because the newer guide and the requirements page disagree, do not treat either list as a definitive compatibility guarantee: verify the current supported OS and installer requirements before proceeding.

Download Streamlabs Desktop from Streamlabs’ official site. The quick-start guide says the site supplies the version for your computer and the installer adds missing background files, such as Windows Redistributables.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Complete the first-run setup

  1. Open the app and grant device access. Allow camera and microphone permissions when your operating system asks, if you intend to use those devices.
  2. Choose your use and sign in. Select live streaming or recording, then sign in with a Streamlabs ID or a supported streaming account. Streamlabs’ getting-started guide also describes choosing an intended use and skill level.
  3. Import or start fresh. If you already use OBS Studio, the onboarding flow offers an option to import existing settings. Otherwise, choose Start Fresh.
  4. Select your devices and overlay. Choose the available camera and microphone if prompted, then select an overlay or skip it. Streamlabs may show Free and Ultra choices during onboarding; check the current in-app descriptions for plan features and terms, which can change.

A built-in microphone or webcam can be enough to begin. An external USB microphone is optional, not a prerequisite.

3. Build a scene and add the sources you need

A scene is a layout for a stream or recording; sources are the things placed in that layout. In the Scenes panel, click the plus button, name the scene so you can identify it later, and add sources for the content you want viewers to see.

Choose the right capture source

  • Display Capture: captures the whole desktop. Close private windows and hide notifications before streaming.
  • Window Capture: captures one application window, useful when you want to share a particular program rather than the entire desktop.
  • Game Capture: captures gameplay, including full-screen games.
  • Screen Capture: Streamlabs’ July 2026 getting-started guide recommends this unified option where it is available.
  • Video Capture Device: adds a webcam or other supported video device.
  • Alert Box or Chat Box: optional widgets that can display alerts or chat in the scene.

Available capture-source labels can vary by app version and setup. Add the source that matches your content, then check the preview to confirm it is showing the intended display, window, or game.

Arrange the layers

Sources higher in the source list appear in front of sources below them. If your webcam should overlay gameplay, move the webcam source above the game capture source. Resize and position items in the preview, and check that text, alerts, and other elements are not obscured.

4. Set up the microphone and desktop audio

  1. In the Audio Mixer, select the gear icon to open audio settings.
  2. Set the main microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device, choosing the device you actually plan to speak into.
  3. On Windows, set Desktop Audio to the default playback device shown in Windows Sound Settings.
  4. On macOS, Streamlabs’ quick-start guide says desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source. It gives BlackHole as a free example; follow its current setup instructions to route system audio.
  5. Speak into the microphone or play audio, then watch the mixer meters. Confirm that the intended source responds and that unwanted sources remain silent.

If a meter does not move, check that the selected device is connected, permitted by the operating system, and selected in the correct mixer field. Avoid capturing sensitive computer audio when streaming.

5. Choose video, encoder, and output settings

Resolution and frame rate

In Settings > Video, set Base (Canvas) Resolution to your monitor’s canvas resolution. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution viewers should receive; it should be equal to or lower than the base resolution. A lower output can reduce the work required of the computer and connection.

Choose a frame rate suited to the material. Streamlabs gives 30 FPS for slower card games and 60 FPS for fast-action games as examples, not as a universal preset. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate and can increase system load.

Encoder and connection capacity

Streamlabs’ getting-started guide distinguishes x264 software encoding, which uses the CPU, from hardware encoding such as NVENC, which uses a supported GPU. It recommends NVENC New for Nvidia graphics cards. If the computer struggles, try a less demanding output resolution or frame rate, or a supported hardware encoder; settings beyond the computer’s capacity can cause performance problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streamlabs’ April 2025 requirements article gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 FPS for most platforms. This is a general Streamlabs guideline, not a guarantee for every platform, game, or scene. Check the current streaming platform’s upload and bitrate guidance for your actual broadcast, and leave capacity for normal network variation.

6. Test, then go live or record

Before a live stream

  • Check the preview for the right capture source, readable layout, and webcam framing.
  • Speak and play computer audio as applicable; verify the correct mixer meters respond.
  • Test widgets and alerts before relying on them live.
  • Close private windows and confirm that no personal information is visible or audible.

When ready, choose Go Live, select the platform, enter the stream metadata, and confirm. Streamlabs’ quick-start describes these as the final steps in its go-live flow.

For a local recording

Set the save location under Settings > Output, then select Record. Select the button again to stop recording. Check the saved file and its audio before using it elsewhere.

7. Troubleshoot common setup problems

The installer or a feature behaves unexpectedly on Windows

Streamlabs’ July 9, 2026 troubleshooting article advises installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributables and rebooting, even on 64-bit Windows. It also recommends updating graphics drivers and the operating system, checking firewall permissions, and allowing Streamlabs through antivirus where applicable. These are troubleshooting measures, not required routine steps for every installation. See the Streamlabs Desktop troubleshooting guide.

The camera, microphone, or desktop audio is missing

  • Confirm the device is connected and selected in Streamlabs, and that the operating system has granted access.
  • For Windows desktop audio, check that Streamlabs is using the default playback device in Windows Sound Settings.
  • For macOS desktop audio, confirm the routing software is configured and selected as the Mic/Aux source; a microphone selection alone does not capture system audio.
  • Watch the Audio Mixer meters while producing sound. If the expected meter stays still, recheck the selected input rather than assuming the recording will contain it.

The game or screen does not appear in the preview

Check that the source matches what you are trying to capture: display, one window, or game. Where available, try the unified Screen Capture source described in Streamlabs’ July 2026 guide. Recheck the preview after changing the source.

The webcam is hidden behind gameplay

Move the Video Capture Device source higher in the source list than the gameplay source, then verify its size and position in the preview.

The stream stutters or the computer struggles

Reduce output resolution or frame rate, use a supported hardware encoder if available, and check that the selected bitrate fits both the platform’s guidance and your upload capacity. There is no single best preset across different computers, content, and connections.

A fresh scene collection has the wrong canvas or output size

Open Settings > Video and check Base (Canvas) and Output (Scaled) Resolution. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting article advises using the monitor’s native resolution for the base. Treat Clear Cache and Restart as a reset: Streamlabs says it wipes user data, so do not use it as a routine first step.
