To start streaming gameplay on YouTube, enable live streaming on your channel, choose either your console’s built-in broadcast feature or an encoder for a PC, and test your audio and video before going public. For a first broadcast, aim for a stable stream rather than the highest resolution: YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps, and it recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
Check that your channel can go live
Before preparing a broadcast, verify your channel and enable live streaming. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says streamers must be at least 16, have a verified channel, and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned session.

Choose how to send the game to YouTube
Use a console’s built-in streaming option
Modern consoles can stream directly. This is the simplest route if the console’s broadcast controls meet your needs and you do not need a separate gameplay capture setup or more flexible audio and video sources.

Use an encoder for a PC or more control
An encoder is the better fit for PC gameplay or if you want overlays, a webcam, or more control over external audio and video. You can use streaming software or a hardware encoder; YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to connect one. YouTube’s verified-encoder list is a selection resource, not an endorsement; listed third-party products are not made by YouTube.
Set up a first encoder stream
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, on stream, or in public chat. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Add the game and audio sources. Select the game capture or display source and microphone in the encoder. Add a webcam only if you want a face camera. Check game audio and commentary as separate sources so you can hear whether both are reaching the stream.
- Choose a stable output setting. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the upload connection and the computer’s ability to encode. Begin modestly if either is uncertain; increase quality only after testing.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Start streaming from the encoder, wait for the preview, and check the stream health status. When the preview and sound are right, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- End the broadcast cleanly. End the stream in YouTube, then stop the encoder. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 encoding, up to 60 fps. Its general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For a beginner, use a stable configuration you can test rather than starting with advanced HDR or HLS settings.

These are YouTube recommendations for the specified H.264 output formats, not a universal internet-speed requirement. YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. A connection advertised at a given upload speed may still fluctuate, and the computer must also encode the selected resolution and frame rate reliably. If the preview stutters or health warnings appear, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.

Use equipment you have; add gear only to solve a problem
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin. A microphone carries commentary, headphones help you monitor the game and stream audio, and a webcam adds a face camera; none is a requirement for a gameplay broadcast. YouTube lists these as common equipment for gaming and casual streams, but does not establish particular models as tested recommendations.
If you want to compare microphones, “USB microphone for streaming” is a useful category search phrase. Start with the audio available to you and upgrade only if it solves a specific sound-quality or monitoring issue.

Test before you announce a public session
- Make a private or unlisted test and use the same game, movement, and audio mix you expect during the real broadcast.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health; listen for both game audio and commentary.
- Check the result on another device if possible, since your encoder preview alone does not confirm the viewer experience.
- Monitor quality while live and lower output settings if the connection or encoder cannot maintain them.
Copyright and game audio
Do not assume that music heard in a game is cleared for a YouTube broadcast. The setup guidance does not determine the copyright status of every game soundtrack, licensed track, user-generated item, or jurisdiction. Before including third-party music, check current YouTube policies and the game publisher’s guidance. Muting or replacing a soundtrack may be prudent when its streaming permissions are unclear.
Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: confirm channel verification and eligibility, then allow for first-time activation, which can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: check that the server URL and stream key were copied correctly into the encoder destination settings and that you selected the intended stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- The preview is missing or unhealthy: confirm the encoder is running and sending the selected output, then wait for Live Control Room to receive it. Reduce output demands if warnings or instability continue.
- Video drops frames or looks choppy: lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Check both upload stability and whether the computer can encode the chosen settings; a bitrate figure alone cannot guarantee smooth delivery.
- Commentary or game sound is absent: inspect the selected audio source and levels in the encoder, then repeat the test with game audio and microphone checked separately.
