The easiest way to get Spotify Premium is through Spotify’s website. Choose Individual, Student, Duo, or Family, complete checkout, and confirm the final price before paying. On iPhone or iPad, do not try to subscribe inside the app: Spotify requires Premium sign-ups to be completed on its website.
How to get Spotify Premium
For most people, the correct way to get Spotify Premium is to sign up through Spotify’s website—not inside the iPhone or iPad app. Open Spotify’s official Premium page, sign in or create an account, choose Individual, Student, Duo, or Family, and complete checkout with an available payment method. Check the final price and promotional terms shown at checkout because Spotify’s prices and introductory offers can change.

Step-by-step sign-up
- Open Spotify’s official Premium page or start the subscription flow from your Spotify account while signed in.
- Choose a plan: Individual, Student, Duo, or Family.
- Review the final checkout terms. Confirm the monthly price, introductory period, renewal price, and any eligibility requirements before paying.
- Enter an accepted payment method. Available payment options vary by location. Student subscriptions cannot use mobile billing or billing through another company, such as a phone or internet provider.
- Finish payment and start listening. Premium benefits apply to the account used during checkout.
Using an iPhone or iPad? Subscribe on Spotify’s website. Spotify does not allow Premium subscriptions to be purchased inside the iOS app. You can still use the app to sign in and listen after subscribing.

The displayed Individual plan also lists audiobook listening time. Exact benefits and limits can change, so review the plan description before purchase.
Which Spotify Premium plan is best?
Choose Premium Individual if you listen alone
Premium Individual is the simplest option for one person. It gives one account Premium access and avoids the same-address rules attached to Duo and Family. It is also the practical choice if you share neither a household nor a subscription with another listener.
Choose Premium Student if you qualify
Premium Student is the best value for an eligible student. The displayed U.S. price is $6.99 per month after the introductory period, and Spotify currently displays Hulu access as included, subject to eligibility and offer terms.
The discount is not automatic. Spotify uses SheerID to verify student status, and eligibility is limited to qualifying colleges and universities. Spotify says the discount can last for up to four years, but you must renew or re-verify annually. If your school does not appear in the verification form, it is not eligible at that time.
Choose Premium Duo for two people at the same address
Duo is usually the best choice for two people who live together and want separate Spotify accounts. At $18.99 per month, it costs less than two Individual subscriptions at the displayed prices. The plan manager pays for and manages the subscription.

- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
Do not choose Duo as a workaround for two people living at different addresses. Spotify requires both members to reside at the same address, and the plan is intended for a shared household.
Choose Premium Family for three or more household members
Family is the strongest value for a household with at least three listeners. At $21.99 per month, it supports up to six separate Premium accounts and costs less than three Individual subscriptions at the displayed prices. The plan manager also gets parental-control features, and Spotify lists support for creating accounts for listeners under 13 where available.
As with Duo, Family is limited to people who live at the same address. It is not a legitimate option for friends or relatives who live in separate households.

Using the displayed U.S. prices:
- Two Individual plans: $25.98 per month.
- Duo: $18.99 per month.
- Three Individual plans: $38.97 per month.
- Family: $21.99 per month.
That makes Duo cheaper than two Individual subscriptions, while Family is cheaper than three or more Individual subscriptions—provided the members meet Spotify’s same-address requirement and those prices remain unchanged. This is a comparison based on the displayed monthly rates, not a promise that Spotify will keep those rates or plan features permanently.
How to get the Spotify Student discount
- Start the Premium Student sign-up process from Spotify.
- Complete the SheerID verification form.
- If requested, sign in through your school portal or upload proof of enrollment.
- Wait for SheerID’s confirmation email.
- Return to Spotify and apply the discount to a new or existing Spotify account.
- Complete payment using an eligible payment method.
You do not need to add a school email address to your Spotify account. However, Spotify Student cannot be paid through mobile billing or through another company such as a phone or internet provider. If your existing Premium subscription is billed that way, Spotify says you must cancel it and sign up again using an eligible payment method.

What to know about Spotify trials and promotions
Spotify may display introductory offers for Individual or Student, but promotions can be restricted by previous Premium use, eligibility, and an expiration date. A promotion seen in an older article, email, or screenshot may no longer be available.
Before paying, confirm:
- How long the introductory price lasts.
- The regular price after the promotion.
- Whether your account has previously used a trial or Premium offer.
- When billing begins and how often you will be charged.
The offer and price shown on Spotify’s final checkout screen should take priority over any earlier advertised promotion.
Can you use a Spotify gift card?
Spotify’s U.S. support information says new Spotify gift cards are no longer available for purchase. Previously purchased cards may still be redeemable for Individual Premium under specified conditions, but they cannot be applied to Student, Duo, Family, or trial offers.
As a result, buying a newly advertised Spotify gift card is not a dependable current way to obtain Premium in the United States. Check the card’s terms and Spotify’s redemption requirements before attempting to use an older card.

- Trying to subscribe in the iOS app: Use Spotify’s website instead.
- Using Duo or Family with people at different addresses: Both plans require members to live at the same address.
- Assuming the Student discount is automatic: SheerID verification is required, along with annual re-verification.
- Trusting an old promotional price: Check the current checkout page and renewal terms.
- Buying a new Spotify gift card: Spotify’s U.S. support page says new cards are no longer available.
- Canceling in the wrong place: Partner-billed subscriptions may have to be canceled through the partner, and only the Duo or Family plan manager can cancel the shared plan.
Quick decision guide
- One person: Premium Individual.
- Eligible college or university student: Premium Student, after SheerID verification.
- Two people sharing an address: Premium Duo.
- Three to six people sharing an address: Premium Family.
Whichever plan you choose, start on Spotify’s website, verify any student or household eligibility requirements, and confirm the final checkout price before submitting payment.
