How to Get Freeview on Your Smart TV: Setup, Apps and Alternatives

Freeview Play is built into compatible UK TVs, not generally downloaded from an app store. Check your model, connect aerial and broadband, or use an alternative.

You usually cannot download Freeview as a standalone app onto any smart TV. If your UK television has Freeview Play built in, connect an aerial and broadband, tune the channels, then open Channel 100, the Freeview Play button or the logo in the TV guide. If it does not, use the individual broadcaster apps your TV supports or add a compatible Freeview Play box.

Is Freeview an app?

It depends what you mean by Freeview. Freeview is live digital terrestrial television received through an aerial and a compatible TV tuner. Freeview Play combines live Freeview channels with internet-delivered catch-up and on-demand services. It is normally built into compatible UK TVs and recorders; it cannot generally be installed from an app store on an unsupported television. Freeview explains the compatibility options.

A smart TV may run Netflix, YouTube and other apps without supporting Freeview Play. The Freeview mobile app is a separate product for Android phones and tablets, and iPhones and iPads—not the usual way to put Freeview on a television. Freeview’s online viewing information describes the available routes.

How to check whether your TV has Freeview Play

  1. Look for a dedicated Freeview Play button on the remote.
  2. Open the electronic programme guide and look for the Freeview Play logo.
  3. Try Channel 100, which Freeview identifies as an easy way to open the connected service on compatible equipment.
  4. Search the exact model number on the manufacturer’s UK support page or product specification. Confirm that the specification says Freeview Play, not just “smart TV” or “internet TV.”
  5. Check that the TV is configured for the UK region. Imported sets and regional variants may not offer the same services.

These checks are useful because menu labels and app support differ by model and operating system. Freeview lists LG, Panasonic, Philips, Sony, Toshiba and retailer brands among manufacturers with compatible equipment, but that does not mean every model from those brands includes Freeview Play. See Freeview’s compatibility checks. Sets bought before 2016 probably do not have Freeview Play, though the specific model is the deciding factor. Check Freeview’s guidance for unsupported devices.

How to set up Freeview Play on a compatible TV

  1. Connect an aerial. Plug the aerial lead into the television’s aerial or terrestrial input. An aerial is needed for the normal live terrestrial channel lineup, and it should be in good condition.
  2. Connect the TV to broadband. Use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Freeview states a minimum speed of 2 Mbps for catch-up and on-demand viewing; this is a minimum, not a guarantee of smooth playback over a weak or congested connection. Freeview’s online viewing guidance.
  3. Choose the UK region if prompted. The precise setup screen varies. If the TV was imported or configured for another country, check its country or broadcast-region setting in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Run an automatic channel scan. In Settings or Setup, look for a label such as Auto-tune, Auto setup, Channel scan, Digital tuning, Digital terrestrial tuning or Set up channels. Freeview says its general scan often takes around three to four minutes, but timing varies with the TV and signal. Follow Freeview’s quick-start sequence.
  5. Open Freeview Play. Try Channel 100, the dedicated remote button, or the Freeview Play logo in the guide. On a compatible connected TV, selecting a programme with a catch-up or on-demand option may also open the relevant player.

Do I need separate BBC iPlayer, ITVX and other apps?

Freeview Play is designed to provide access to relevant players, but a TV may still ask you to install or open a player, accept its terms, or sign in. Depending on the device and available services, players may include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5, UKTV Play and CBS Catchup; regional services such as STV may also be available. The lineup can vary by equipment and location.

Freeview itself does not charge a subscription, but individual players may require accounts. Freeview lists sign-up requirements for on-demand players. A TV licence is required for watching or recording live television and for BBC iPlayer use; check TV Licensing’s current rules and fee information for your circumstances. A colour licence costs £180 for the year beginning 1 April 2026.

What if Freeview Play is missing from the app store?

That is not necessarily a fault. Freeview Play is not generally a downloadable app that turns any smart TV into a compatible set. The television may lack Freeview Play support, be an older or non-UK model, or have an app platform that does not support the service. Internet apps alone do not establish compatibility.

Use the broadcaster apps your TV supports

If you mainly want catch-up from specific channels, search the television’s app store for BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 or other relevant players. Check that the exact app is supported on your model and region. This can work without Freeview Play, but gives you separate apps rather than the integrated Freeview guide.

Add a Freeview Play box or recorder

A compatible external box is the clearest way to add Freeview Play to a working TV that lacks it. A recorder can also provide recording, pause and rewind functions. You will need an available HDMI input, and an aerial remains necessary for normal terrestrial live channels. Freeview confirms that a compatible recorder can add the service.

Replace the TV only if it makes sense

If you are already replacing the television, check that the UK model specification explicitly includes Freeview Play. Do not rely on “smart,” “4K,” “Android TV” or “built-in apps” as proof.

Can you watch Freeview without an aerial?

Normal live terrestrial Freeview reception relies on an aerial and suitable signal coverage. Freeview Play uses broadband for catch-up and on-demand, and some television may be available online without an aerial, but that does not mean every live Freeview channel is streamed or that every TV supports the same options. Check Freeview Play’s current information and the services available on your device. Freeview also provides a web TV Guide and a mobile app for phones and tablets; these are not a guarantee of a complete live-TV replacement on a smart TV. See Freeview’s online options.

Troubleshooting Freeview Play and tuning problems

Freeview Play opens nowhere, or Channel 100 does nothing

  • Confirm the TV is connected to the internet and has completed its first-time setup.
  • Check the model specification and UK region; Channel 100 is an access route for connected Freeview Play equipment, not every smart TV.
  • Restart the TV and router, check for a TV software update, then retune channels and try again.
  • Check the manufacturer’s model-specific support page. If the set is not compatible, use broadcaster apps or external Freeview Play equipment.

There are channels but no catch-up programmes

  • Test another app to confirm the TV has internet access; try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
  • Check for firmware updates and verify the TV’s country or region setting.
  • Open the relevant broadcaster app directly; it may need an update, setup or sign-in.
  • Retune and try Channel 100 again. If the model lacks Freeview Play or the player is no longer supported, use an available app or a compatible external box.

The channel scan finds no channels

  • Check that the aerial lead is firmly connected to the TV’s aerial input and that the correct TV input or tuner mode is selected.
  • Inspect the cable and aerial. An indoor aerial may not provide enough signal, and coverage varies by address.
  • Check the UK region setting and run the scan again. Use Freeview’s local channel checker to see what is available at your address. Freeview notes that channel availability depends on coverage.

Which setup is right for you?

  • Your TV has Freeview Play: Connect the aerial and broadband, tune channels and use the built-in service.
  • Your TV has smart apps but no Freeview Play: Use the individual broadcaster apps if they are supported, or add a Freeview Play box for the integrated guide.
  • You want to record programmes: Consider a compatible Freeview Play recorder rather than a basic box.
  • Your TV is imported or configured outside the UK: Verify the exact UK compatibility before buying anything; an external box may avoid replacing a working set.
  • You have no aerial: Check which online services work on your device, but do not assume they provide the full live terrestrial lineup.

Freeview channels do not require a Freeview subscription, but equipment, broadband, aerial needs and TV licensing obligations are separate considerations. Freeview explains its costs.
