What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If YouTube reports a stream health warning and OBS shows rising dropped frames, first reduce the video bitrate to one your stable upload connection can sustain, then check the Windows network path. Those symptoms point to connection instability or an unsustainable bitrate—not the same problem as OBS rendering or encoding overload. Use the timestamped warning in YouTube Live Control Room to guide the diagnosis.
First, identify which signal is failing
- In YouTube Live Control Room: note the warning text and timestamp. YouTube classifies red warnings as critical and yellow warnings as moderate; the message can identify a format, bitrate, or video-setting issue. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
- In OBS: check the dropped-frame counter and connection status around that time. OBS describes dropped frames as the client failing to maintain a stable connection to the remote server or sustain the configured bitrate. A high or increasing count can interrupt or disconnect a stream.
- Keep network and performance symptoms separate: OBS network drops or disconnects point first to the connection or bitrate. “Encoding overloaded,” or choppy output without rising network drops, points toward rendering or encoding performance.
- Look for a pattern: record whether the problem recurs on every stream or only at a particular time, and whether the OBS counter changes when YouTube posts a warning.
OBS says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, focuses instead on connection stability, bitrate, and the network path.
Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. Use the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably, not the best result from a single speed test. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting heuristic; it is not a guarantee, and the YouTube recommendation for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate is the better configuration reference.
YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates:

| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not universal minimum upload speeds. The official encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table also gives separate guidance for AV1 and H.265 and can change. Follow the current table for your codec and output; if your connection cannot sustain the selected resolution and bitrate, lower the resolution rather than expecting a bitrate number alone to fix unstable service. YouTube’s error guidance also ties bitrate warnings to the selected resolution.
Check OBS network options on Windows
Open Settings → Advanced → Network. Change one option at a time and run a test stream so you can tell whether a change helped.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Try enabling Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. OBS says these Windows-only options may help some users and can add useful troubleshooting details to logs.
- Confirm Bind to IP is set to Default.
- As a diagnostic, try IP Family → IPv4 Only. If it does not improve the result, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
- Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. Treat it as a fallback, not a root-cause fix: OBS warns that it reduces video quality and does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
Isolate Wi-Fi, VPN, security software, and network utilities
- Test on wired Ethernet if possible. If you currently use Wi-Fi and can connect to the router, an Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic. If drops stop over wired, the wireless link or its local conditions may be involved. A cable will not fix ISP route congestion, a bitrate mismatch, VPN interference, or OBS performance problems.
- Test with the VPN off. OBS notes that VPN use can make a connection unstable. Disable it only for a controlled test, then compare the dropped-frame counter and YouTube warning.
- Check security software carefully. Temporarily disable it only long enough to test whether it is interfering; restore protection afterward. If the test identifies it, add an OBS exception rather than leaving security disabled.
- Inspect traffic-priority or “optimization” utilities. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples of tools that may deprioritize OBS traffic. Follow OBS’s current directions for the relevant utility; do not indiscriminately uninstall software.
- Update the network driver using the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s current driver.
- Restart the modem and router. Cables, routers, modems, network cards, switches, and extenders can all be part of a faulty link. If you are unsure whether equipment needs replacing, consult your ISP before buying hardware.
After each change, run a comparable test and note whether OBS drops stop and YouTube warnings clear. Changing one variable at a time makes the result more useful than changing several settings at once.
Match OBS output to YouTube’s ingest requirements
Use the specific Live Control Room message to decide what to check; avoid changing unrelated settings. YouTube’s error-message guidance says format warnings can involve codec or container, bitrate warnings depend on resolution, and video warnings may involve stream count, interlacing, frame rate, keyframe frequency, or resolution.

- Encrypted transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Test before the event: check a test stream with similar movement and audio, then monitor stream health during the live event. YouTube’s guidance is to “monitor the stream health and review messages.”
Use the performance path only when the symptoms fit
If OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” or the output is choppy while the network dropped-frame counter is not increasing, investigate rendering and encoding instead of treating it as packet loss. OBS explains that GPU overload or a system bottleneck can prevent timely rendering or encoding.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator.
- Close programs you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If the problem continues, lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
These steps address rendering or encoding load; they are not direct fixes for an unstable internet connection. See the OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, published June 12, 2021.

If local troubleshooting does not stop the drops
When the same problem persists after testing bitrate, wired versus Wi-Fi, VPN and relevant network utilities, OBS advises contacting your ISP. Route congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control. Give the provider the times drops occurred, your connection type, the OBS logs, and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried. YouTube also provides a live-stream troubleshooting guide.
