Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A YouTube stream that appears frozen does not automatically mean an older NVIDIA GPU or NVENC has failed. First identify where the problem occurs: OBS rendering or encoding, the internet connection to YouTube, YouTube ingest, or a viewer’s playback. Then apply the fix for the evidence you see.
Find where the freeze starts
Run a short test stream and check four things together: the OBS preview, a local recording, OBS statistics, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. The same frozen-looking picture can have different causes, so do not start by changing encoder settings at random.
| What you observe | What it points to | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview or local recording stutters, or OBS reports rendering or encoding lag | OBS may not be rendering or encoding frames quickly enough. | Reduce competing GPU work and scene or output demands. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. | Check connection stability and use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. |
| OBS output and local recording look healthy, but YouTube reports stream-health problems | The issue may be between the encoder and YouTube ingest, or in the stream configuration. | Check YouTube’s health messages, ingest settings, and outbound connection. |
| The creator’s OBS output looks normal, but one or more viewers see buffering | Viewer playback buffering is not proof that the encoder stalled. | Compare reports from viewers and check the stream directly before changing GPU settings. |
YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and a local archive; if both look and sound healthy, it advises investigating the outbound internet connection. Use the actual OBS counters and YouTube warnings to distinguish these cases rather than diagnosing from the on-screen symptom alone. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide, OBS connection troubleshooting, and OBS buffering troubleshooting.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
NVENC handles video encoding, but it does not remove all GPU work from OBS. OBS still uses the GPU to render and composite scenes. OBS Project puts it plainly: “OBS needs GPU time and resources because it has to composite and render a scene.” A demanding game, complex scene, filters, high output resolution, or high frame rate can leave too little capacity for smooth streaming even when hardware encoding is selected. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Reduce competing GPU load. Close GPU-heavy applications you recognize. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding graphics settings. An uncapped game can consume available GPU capacity that OBS needs.
- Simplify the OBS workload. Temporarily remove or disable nonessential sources, filters, and scene effects. Test the same scene again so you can tell whether scene complexity was contributing.
- Lower output demands if needed. Reduce output resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick fix to try for GPU overload; it is not a guaranteed cure.
- Retest and compare OBS statistics. Change one class of demand at a time and check whether rendering or encoding lag improves. Do not infer success solely from a momentarily smooth preview.
If OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects
Dropped frames are a connection symptom, not the same as rendering lag or encoder lag. OBS Project defines them this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps, and check whether your outbound connection is stable and can sustain the bitrate you selected. YouTube also advises testing outbound connection strength when encoder output is healthy; if you identify a connection problem, its guidance is to consult your ISP.
OBS has a dynamic bitrate option that can lower bitrate during congestion. It may help keep a stream connected, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce picture quality. Treat it as a mitigation, not a substitute for a stable connection.

Check YouTube ingest settings
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s error guidance warns that a keyframe interval over four seconds can cause buffering. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises testing before going live while watching stream health. Confirm the settings in OBS’s stream and output configuration, then verify the result in Live Control Room. The exact OBS labels can vary by version, so check the controls available in your installation rather than assuming a particular menu layout. See YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations and YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following figures are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 by ingest resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them. YouTube’s page showed no publication year; it was accessed in 2026.

| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
These numbers apply to H.264; YouTube’s listed AV1 and H.265 recommendations differ. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, a lower sustainable setting is preferable to treating the recommendation as a bandwidth guarantee.
When an older NVIDIA GPU may be the limiting factor
OBS’s hardware encoding guide lists NVENC support for GeForce GTX 750 Ti, GTX 900-series (Maxwell), or newer GPUs, and recommends a GPU with 6th-generation NVENC (Turing) for best results. It notes that revision 1 of the GTX 1650 has 5th-generation NVENC. These are compatibility and encoder-generation references, not a promise that a supported card can handle every game, scene, resolution, or frame rate. Keep graphics drivers current and confirm the exact GPU model and revision in OBS’s hardware encoding guide.

Consider an upgrade only if repeatable tests show that your intended workload still cannot be sustained after reducing competing GPU load and OBS demands. A Turing-generation NVIDIA card is a category to investigate, not a universal fix or a specific model recommendation. Check the exact card revision and current compatibility before buying.

- Game looks smooth, but stream stutters: the game may be consuming GPU resources OBS needs to render. Cap the game frame rate, enable V-Sync, lower game graphics, and retest OBS rendering and encoding statistics.
- OBS preview or local recording also stutters: reduce scene complexity, filters, output resolution, or frame rate; try 30 fps if 60 fps is not stable.
- OBS reports dropped frames while the local recording is fine: investigate the outbound connection and sustainable bitrate rather than replacing the NVENC GPU generation.
- YouTube reports buffering or a keyframe warning: check that the keyframe interval is two seconds as recommended and does not exceed four seconds; also verify codec and bitrate for the chosen output.
- Only some viewers report buffering: verify that OBS output and YouTube stream health are sound before changing encoding settings; viewer playback can buffer independently.
- Symptoms persist after settings changes: make a short test with one change at a time, note the OBS counters and YouTube messages, and use the matching OBS or YouTube troubleshooting guide rather than guessing from the GPU’s age.
