If YouTube Live rejects an FFmpeg stream key, first copy the current stream key and matching server URL from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace the values in FFmpeg’s output destination. A stale or mismatched key is a first check, not the only possible cause: a wrong URL or protocol, unsuitable encoder settings, or a network or encoder fault can produce a similar failure.
1. Refresh the stream key in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Stream.
- Under Stream key, copy the key shown for the stream you intend to use.
- Update the key in FFmpeg’s output destination. Check that it was not truncated and that no accidental whitespace or quotation mark was added.
- If the key may have been exposed or is stale, reset it in Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg with the newly generated key.
YouTube’s guidance for third-party encoder startup errors is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream). A stream key is a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings). Keep it private; do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts.
2. Check the server URL and FFmpeg output destination
YouTube supplies a server URL and stream key together in Live Control Room. Confirm that both belong to the intended stream. Reused stream settings can leave an old key in a saved command, so do not assume a previously working value is still current.
FFmpeg documents RTMP destinations as a server URL with optional port, application, instance, and playpath components. Its generic publishing example uses the FLV output format (FFmpeg protocol documentation: RTMP). The following is only a schematic pattern:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
SERVER, APP, and STREAM_KEY are placeholders, not a ready-to-use YouTube endpoint. Build the destination from the actual server URL and key shown for your stream. The exact path arrangement depends on the values and configuration; do not assume one concatenation works for every stream.
- Look for a stale server URL, a key copied from another stream, a missing path component, or a truncated key.
- Check for accidental spaces and copied quotation marks around the URL or key.
- Do not share your full output URL when asking for help if it contains the key.
YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for entering the server URL and key in the encoder (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Use the RTMPS branch only when the endpoint or error points to it
An RTMPS or TLS failure is different from a rejected credential. YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted RTMP option. In Live Control Room, use the lock icon beside Stream URL to obtain the RTMPS URL, and copy that URL together with the current key.
- SSL certificate error: check that the URL begins with
rtmpsand uses the correct server. If the error is the one covered by YouTube’s guidance, try port 443. - Connection timeout: verify the URL and confirm that your FFmpeg build and configuration support RTMPS.
See YouTube Help: Use RTMPS for live streaming. Do not switch protocols as a blanket fix for a stale or mistyped key.

4. Check whether the media settings are suitable
A correct key and destination can still carry an unsuitable feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Check the current table and your exact error before changing parameters; a media-setting mismatch is not the same as an invalid key (YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
| H.264 video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are the figures in YouTube’s current H.264 encoder table; it lists additional resolution and codec combinations, so use that table rather than extrapolating an unlisted value. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio, checking that your outbound connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, and monitoring stream health.

5. Separate FFmpeg, local signal, and network problems
If the current key and matching URL are correct, use the exact FFmpeg output and YouTube stream-health message to choose the next check. YouTube recommends updating third-party encoder software, checking the picture and sound in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and testing the outbound internet connection (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream; YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- If FFmpeg reports an error before connecting, inspect the command, output URL, protocol, and encoder build.
- If the local preview or encoder output looks or sounds wrong, address the input, encoding, or CPU issue before changing the stream key again.
- If the local feed is healthy but YouTube receives it intermittently, investigate outbound connection stability and available upload capacity.
- When YouTube’s preview appears, read the Live Control Room health messages and follow the warning that matches the observed problem.
Test before an event, using representative motion and sound, rather than first discovering a problem during the live broadcast. If you use a third-party software login integration instead of a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team; the integration may need an update to work with YouTube Live (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
