Start by testing another live stream, then another device or network. If only one stream buffers, the problem may be with that broadcaster or the service; if several streams and services fail, investigate your device, Wi-Fi, home network, or internet provider before buying anything.
Find out where the buffering starts
Live video travels through several links: the broadcaster’s encoder and upload connection, the service delivering the video, your home network, and your device or app. A pause does not by itself identify which link is failing. Compare streams, devices, and networks to narrow it down.
- Refresh the page or close and reopen the playback app.
- Try a different live stream on the same service.
- Check whether other websites or video services work.
- If practical, try the same stream on another device or network, such as cellular data.
| What you observe | What it may indicate | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| One stream buffers, but other streams play | A stream-specific issue or the broadcaster’s settings may be involved. | Try another playback quality or channel, then report the issue to the service if it persists. |
| Several streams or services fail on one device | The app, device, or local connection may be involved. | Restart or update the app or device, then compare with another device or network. |
| Several devices and services fail on the same network | The home network, internet provider, or an outage is more likely. | Restart the modem and router; if the issue continues, check for an outage and contact your provider. |
| Wi-Fi buffers but a wired test is stable | Wireless signal, interference, or local Wi-Fi conditions may be contributing. | Improve router placement or use a wired connection if practical. |
These comparisons point toward likely causes; none proves one on its own. A speed-test result is only a snapshot and cannot rule out congestion, unstable Wi-Fi, device limitations, or a problem with the stream itself.
Lower playback quality when the connection fluctuates
If the player has an Auto quality option, try it first. Twitch says its Auto setting adjusts video quality based on current network conditions. If playback still pauses, select a lower resolution temporarily. YouTube also recommends adjusting playback quality manually and trying a different connection. Lower quality uses less data but reduces image detail.

Twitch’s official playback guidance gives these recommended viewer download speeds. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees, and actual playback also depends on connection stability, competing traffic, device capability, and stream configuration. 1440p60 is available only where the stream and service support it.
| Playback quality | Twitch recommended download speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps or higher |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps or higher |
| 720p60 | 3–6 Mbps or higher |
| 1080p60 | 7–12 Mbps or higher |
| 1440p60, where available | 9–18 Mbps or higher |
These figures are for viewers downloading a stream. They are not broadcaster upload targets; upload capacity and encoder bitrate matter on the broadcaster’s side.

Improve Wi-Fi and reduce competing traffic
- Move closer to the router and place it in an open position, away from obstructions and wireless appliances.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, and other bandwidth-heavy activity on your network, then test playback again.
- Where your device supports it, compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection. Check the device’s ports before buying a cable; a cable is useful for testing wired stability, but it cannot fix every cause of buffering.
- Change one thing at a time and retry the same stream so you can tell which change helped.
YouTube and Netflix recommend improving the device’s proximity to the router and reducing other network use when connection speed is an issue. Netflix also suggests comparing Wi-Fi with a direct cable connection.
Restart and update the app, device, and network
- Refresh the browser player or fully close and reopen the streaming app.
- Restart the device. Install available updates for the app, browser, or operating system if playback problems continue.
- Restart the modem and router: unplug both from power for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for the network to return before testing again. This is Netflix Help Center’s recommended restart interval; device and router procedures can vary.
When to contact your internet provider or the streaming service
Contact your internet provider
If multiple devices and services have trouble on the same connection after basic restart and device checks, look for a local outage. If none is reported and the problem persists, contact your internet provider. Explain whether you tested over Wi-Fi or a direct cable and whether other devices have the same issue. Public Wi-Fi may block video services, while cellular, hotspot, and satellite connections may not provide enough speed or stability for a particular stream.

Report a stream-specific problem
If other streams play normally but one broadcaster’s stream does not, the viewer may not be able to fix the underlying cause. Try another quality or channel, then report the playback issue using the service’s support tools. Twitch notes that unusually high bitrate or misconfigured broadcast settings can make a stream difficult for some viewers to watch.

Twitch’s official streaming FAQ says, as a general practice, upload speed should equal the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. Twitch’s example says a stream configured at 6 Mbps may require at least 8 Mbps upload. Treat that as Twitch guidance, not a universal requirement for every platform or setup.
Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, connection quality, and computer hardware need to work together. Twitch identifies excessive bitrate, network problems, and router issues as possible contributors to buffering or dropped frames. Use the current encoder recommendations and stream-health tools for the platform you broadcast on; settings and requirements can change.
