How to Fix the Spinning Circle on YouTube TV

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If YouTube TV stays on a spinning circle, first test the same program on another device, then restart the affected device and router. That quick comparison tells you whether the likely problem is YouTube TV itself, your home network, or one television, browser, or streaming player. After that, check location settings, install updates, and reinstall the app before moving to device-specific fixes.

A spinner is a loading or playback-start failure—not a diagnosis by itself. Work through the decision tree below rather than assuming that clearing a cache, changing DNS, or buying a new streaming device will solve every case.

Start with a two-minute diagnosis

  1. Try YouTube TV on another supported device using the same account. A phone or computer is useful for this test.
  2. Try another app on the television or streaming device that is showing the spinner.
  3. If practical, try a different internet connection, such as cellular data on a phone.
What you observe Most likely direction Next move
YouTube TV fails on several devices, browsers, or locations A service-side or account-wide issue is more plausible. Check again later and contact YouTube TV Support while signed in.
Only devices on your home network fail Your router, Wi-Fi, internet service, or network congestion is more likely. Restart the router and test the connection.
Other apps also fail on the affected TV or player The device or network is implicated. Restart the device, check updates, and test the network.
Other apps work, but YouTube TV fails on one device The app installation, device software, or manufacturer integration is more likely. Update and reinstall YouTube TV; then check device-specific steps.
The app works, but one live channel or program spins The problem may involve that program, broadcast, or a temporary service issue. Try another channel, another device, and the same program again later.

This comparison is a troubleshooting inference, not proof of the cause. A third-party outage tracker can be a useful signal, but it does not establish that YouTube TV is experiencing an outage. The authoritative escalation route is YouTube TV Support, which provides chat, email, or phone options after you sign in and choose the relevant problem category.

Fixes in the recommended order

1. Restart the TV or streaming device

On a smart TV or streaming player, hold the power button to turn it off, wait at least 30 seconds, and turn it back on. If that does not fully power-cycle the device, unplug it from power for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the home screen to load.

On a phone or tablet, restart the device, then close and reopen YouTube TV. On a computer, close and reopen the browser; restart the computer if the browser or other video services are also behaving abnormally.

2. Restart the router

  1. Unplug the router from power.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Wait until the internet connection has returned before reopening YouTube TV.

While testing, pause large downloads, game updates, video calls, and other high-bandwidth activity. Wi-Fi interference and congestion can cause loading or playback interruptions even when your advertised internet speed appears adequate.

3. Check the connection speed and stability

YouTube TV’s published guidance lists approximately 3 Mbps as the minimum for standard-definition viewing, 7 Mbps for one HD stream, 13 Mbps for reliable HD streaming while other devices use the network, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Plus content when available. These are guidance thresholds, not guarantees: distance from the router, wireless interference, congestion, and simultaneous users can still cause trouble.

Move the affected device closer to the router for a test. If the device has an Ethernet port, testing with an Ethernet cable for a streaming device can help determine whether unstable Wi-Fi is the contributing factor. A wired connection is a diagnostic and network-stability option, not a guaranteed repair for the YouTube TV app. If YouTube TV works over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, investigate router placement, wireless congestion, or the Wi-Fi band rather than immediately replacing the streaming device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify the Home Area and Current playback area

Location errors can cause incomplete loading or prevent expected local programming from appearing, especially after traveling. YouTube TV distinguishes between your permanent Home Area and your temporary physical Current playback area. Do not change the Home Area simply because you are away from home.

On a TV or streaming device:

  1. Open YouTube TV.
  2. Select your profile picture.
  3. Choose Location.
  4. Select Current Playback Area.
  5. Use a phone or other mobile device to open the verification page and allow location access when prompted.

The Home Area is associated with your residence ZIP code. The Current playback area reflects where you are physically watching and may change while traveling. YouTube TV is available only in the United States, and channel availability can also depend on location and partner restrictions. Location settings must not be used to bypass geographic restrictions.

5. Update YouTube TV and the device

Install the newest available YouTube TV app from the device’s official app store. Then check for the latest operating-system or firmware update for the television, streaming player, phone, tablet, game console, or other device.

On a computer, update the browser as well. YouTube TV supports the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Manufacturer software issues can affect supported-device playback, so update the device before concluding that the account is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Reinstall the correct app

If restarting and updating do not help, uninstall YouTube TV, reinstall it from the official app store, sign in again, and retry the program. This applies to smart TVs, media players, game consoles, and mobile devices.

On a television, make sure you select YouTube TV, not the ordinary YouTube app. They are separate applications and may appear next to each other in the store.

  4. Temporarily lower playback quality.
  5. Clear the browser’s cache and cookies.
  6. Open YouTube TV in an incognito or private window with extensions disabled.

If playback works in a private window, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict. This is a diagnostic test—not evidence that every ad blocker or browser extension causes YouTube TV problems. If clearing cookies signs you out of other websites, make sure you have the passwords or sign-in methods needed to return to them.

Device-specific branches

Roku: HDCP, HDR, or display problems

Do not start with Roku display settings if the only symptom is a generic spinner. Use these steps when the spinner is accompanied by a blank screen, choppy playback, an HDCP message, flickering, or a signal problem.

  • For an HDCP error, YouTube TV’s Roku guidance says to enable HDMI Ultra HD Color on the TV.
  • For choppy playback, try turning off HDR under Roku’s Display type settings and select a compatible non-HDR or other appropriate display mode.
  • Power-cycle the Roku and television, and reseat both ends of the HDMI connection.

If the issue specifically points to an HDCP or display handshake, a replacement HDMI cable may be a reasonable conditional test. It is not a universal fix for a loading circle, and replacing it should come after confirming that the problem follows the Roku/display connection.

Apple TV: blank or flickering video

For certain Apple TV app versions that produce blank or flickering video, YouTube TV documents using an SDR default video format while Match Dynamic Range is on, or turning Match Dynamic Range off to improve performance. This is a display workaround for a particular Apple TV symptom, not the first remedy for every spinner.

External computer monitors

YouTube TV notes that an externally connected monitor plugged directly into a computer may be limited to 480p on Mac and Linux because of copyright-protection handling. That restriction can explain unexpectedly low quality after playback starts; it does not, by itself, explain an endless loading circle.

  2. Confirm that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, not separate guest and main networks.
  3. On iPhone or iPad, check that local-network permission is enabled for the casting app.
  4. Restart both the casting device and the streaming device.

Live-TV interruptions: adjust broadcast delay only when appropriate

If the program eventually plays but live television repeatedly buffers or interrupts, YouTube TV offers Default and Decrease broadcast delay settings. Default uses more buffer and is the better choice for minimizing interruptions. Decrease reduces the delay between the live event and your screen but makes interruptions more likely.

This setting is relevant to repeated buffering during live programming. It is not the first solution when the app never leaves the loading screen.

When replacing hardware makes sense

Do not buy a new streaming device as the first response. Consider a replacement only when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • YouTube TV works on another device on the same account and network.
  • Other apps may work, but the affected hardware is unusually slow, obsolete, unsupported, or malfunctioning.
  • The device has been restarted, updated, and given a clean YouTube TV reinstall.
  • The problem is isolated to that hardware rather than the internet connection.

In that situation, compare a supported streaming device for YouTube TV with the device’s operating-system and app requirements before purchasing. Replacement hardware is a last resort, not proof that a spinner is caused by an old device.

What not to try first

  • Changing DNS: the official YouTube TV troubleshooting flow does not establish a particular DNS change as a fix.
  • Using a VPN: it can complicate location verification and does not repair the underlying playback problem.
  • Installing PC-cleaning software: a spinning YouTube TV player does not prove that Windows needs registry cleaning or optimization.
  • Clearing every device setting: use targeted restarts, updates, and reinstallations before a factory reset.
  • Changing the Home Area while traveling: use Current playback area verification instead.

For Windows users who also have broader system-performance or driver symptoms outside YouTube TV, an optional Windows PC performance or driver tool may be relevant to those separate symptoms. It is not a YouTube TV fix and should not be installed solely because the spinner appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does YouTube TV keep showing a spinning circle?

The spinner means playback is not starting, but it does not identify one cause. The likely possibilities include a temporary service issue, unstable Wi-Fi, incorrect playback location, an outdated app or device, a damaged app installation, browser extensions, or a device/display problem. Cross-device testing is the fastest way to narrow it down.

Will clearing the cache fix YouTube TV?

It may help with a browser problem, especially when combined with testing in a private window, but it is not a guaranteed fix. YouTube TV’s broader troubleshooting sequence prioritizes restarting the device and router, checking location, updating software, and reinstalling the app.

Should I change my YouTube TV Home Area when I travel?

No. YouTube TV separates the permanent Home Area from the temporary Current playback area. Verify the Current playback area while traveling rather than changing the residence ZIP code simply to make the service work.

Why does YouTube TV work on my phone but not my TV?

That pattern points more strongly toward the television, streaming player, its software, the app installation, or the TV’s network path than toward a universal account failure. Restart and update the device, reinstall YouTube TV, and compare the TV with another app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact YouTube TV Support?

Contact support when the spinner persists after the relevant device, router, location, update, reinstall, browser, and device-specific checks—or when YouTube TV fails across multiple devices. Provide the device and software versions, affected program, network type, timing, and results of your comparison tests.

The Bottom Line

The reliable way to fix a YouTube TV spinner is to isolate the failure before changing settings: compare devices and apps, restart the device and router, verify playback location, update software, and reinstall YouTube TV. Use Ethernet, HDMI, Roku, Apple TV, casting, and browser-specific steps only when the evidence points to those branches. If the failure follows your account across devices, give YouTube TV Support a detailed diagnostic report.
