If the official Netflix app from Microsoft Store will not open, sign in, load a title, or play video in Windows 11, first find out whether the problem is limited to the app. Test Netflix in a supported browser and, if possible, on another device. Then work through the least disruptive fixes: check the service, account, network and Windows time; update the app and Windows; repair Netflix; and only then reset, repair the Store or reinstall.
This guide is for the Microsoft Store app. If you watch at Netflix.com, skip to the browser troubleshooting section. Before changing anything, note the exact symptom and any Netflix error code.
First, identify what is failing
“Netflix is not working” can mean several different things, and reinstalling the app will not solve every cause. Check which description fits:
- The app will not open, or closes immediately.
- It stays on the Netflix logo or a loading screen.
- You cannot sign in, or the app returns to the sign-in screen.
- The catalog appears, but a title will not start.
- You hear sound but see a black screen, or video freezes or buffers.
- Netflix works in a browser or on another device, but not in this app.
- Video plays, but its resolution is lower than expected.
If Netflix displays an error code, write it down and look it up in the Netflix Help Center’s error-code guidance. An error-specific fix is often more useful than applying unrelated Windows changes.

To confirm you have the installed app, press Windows + I, then open Apps > Installed apps and search for Netflix. If it is not listed, you may be using Netflix in a browser or through a browser shortcut instead. Netflix directs Windows users to install its app through Microsoft Store; it also supports viewing through compatible browsers.
Do these quick checks before changing Windows
- Test another route. Open Netflix.com in a supported browser, or try Netflix on a phone or TV. If you can, test on another network as well.
- Check for a service or account problem. If Netflix fails on multiple devices, check the Netflix Help Center for current service guidance and confirm that the account can sign in elsewhere. A local reinstall cannot fix a service interruption or an account issue.
- Check your connection. Try another website or streaming service. If other devices also have trouble, restart the router. If practical, test Ethernet or move closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy. Disconnect it, retry Netflix, then restore it if it is not the cause. VPNs and traffic filters can interfere in some cases; they are not automatically the cause of every error. On a work, school or public network, streaming may be restricted.
- Check Windows date and time. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically, and choose Sync now if the option appears. Incorrect time can interfere with sign-in and secure connections. Do not change your region as a routine fix.
- Close Netflix and restart the PC. A restart is a quick way to clear a temporary app or system problem.
Update Netflix and Windows
An old app or pending Windows update can contribute to app or playback problems. Updating is a sensible next step before clearing local app data.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, then select Get updates. Store labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds. Let available updates finish.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart if prompted. Check again after restarting if Windows reports more updates.
- Retest the same symptom, including playing a title if playback was the problem.
Windows updates can include system, security or driver changes, but installing one is not a guarantee that it will fix Netflix. For a black screen or missing video, see the video-specific steps before changing drivers.

Repair the Netflix app, then reset it only if needed
Use Repair before Reset. Repair is the less disruptive option; Reset clears local app data and may require you to sign in again. Microsoft describes these options in its Windows app repair guidance.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Netflix, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Repair. Reopen Netflix and test the problem.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, then confirm. Open Netflix again, sign in if prompted, and test a title.
Reset removes local app data such as saved credentials and cached settings. It does not cancel your Netflix subscription. It also cannot fix a Netflix service outage, an account problem, a network restriction, or a system-wide protected-video issue. The exact options and effects can vary with the app package and Windows build.
If Microsoft Store cannot update or install Netflix
If the Store itself is stuck or Netflix will not update, refresh the Store cache before reinstalling the app:

- Close Netflix and Microsoft Store.
- Press Windows + R, type
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. - Wait for the blank window to finish and close; Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Restart the PC, then try Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates again.
wsreset.exe refreshes Microsoft Store cache data. It is not a full Windows repair and does not guarantee that every Store or Netflix problem is fixed. See Microsoft’s Store cache guidance.

If Store updates or installation still fail, repair the Store itself: open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu and Advanced options, then choose Repair. If that fails, choose Reset. Resetting Store may require you to sign in again and can clear Store-local data; it does not delete your personal files. Reopen Store and retry the update.
If Microsoft Store is missing, unavailable or managed by an organization, a work or school policy, parental control, regional setting or Microsoft-account issue may be involved. Do not download a Netflix installer from an unofficial site.

Reinstall Netflix as a later step
If Netflix still fails after app Repair and Reset and the Store checks, reinstall it from Microsoft Store:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Netflix, open its three-dot menu and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, search for Netflix, select the official app, and choose Get or Install.
- When installation finishes, open Netflix, sign in and test playback.
Netflix’s Windows app information directs users to Microsoft Store. Avoid deleting folders from hidden app-data locations: Store apps use package-specific storage, and removing the wrong files can cause additional problems.
Use a browser to separate an app problem from a wider one
Netflix supports viewing on Windows through compatible browsers. Its browser requirements list Windows 10 and Windows 11, with minimum versions of Edge 118, Chrome 117, Firefox 111 and Opera 92. Netflix lists up to Ultra HD for Edge and Chrome when additional requirements are met, and up to Full HD for Firefox and Opera; these are ceilings, not a promise that every setup will receive that resolution.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Browser works, app fails: The account and service are less likely to be the main problem. Focus on the Netflix package, Store, and app-local data.
- Browser and app both fail: Check service, account, network, Windows time, and playback or display conditions rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
- Only one browser fails: Update that browser, temporarily disable extensions, clear its site data if appropriate, and check its protected-content settings. If video is black only in that browser, try toggling hardware acceleration and relaunching it.
A browser is a useful diagnostic fallback, but do not assume it has every feature of the Windows app.
Black screen, audio-only playback or missing video
If menus load and audio plays but the picture is black, the problem may be specific to video output or protected playback. Try these symptom-specific tests after the basic app checks:
- Update the graphics driver. Use Windows Update or the official support site for your PC or graphics hardware (Intel, AMD or NVIDIA). Restart after installation. Driver changes can introduce problems, so avoid third-party driver utilities.
- Simplify the display connection. Temporarily disconnect a dock, splitter, capture device or external monitor and test on the PC’s built-in display. If that works, reconnect one item at a time; also test another supported port or cable.
- Check full-screen behavior. If video fails only in full-screen mode, test windowed playback before changing system settings.
- For browser-only failures, test hardware acceleration. Toggle the browser’s hardware-acceleration setting, relaunch the browser and retry. This is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix.
Protected content can be affected by graphics drivers, displays and connection requirements, but a black screen does not prove that DRM is the cause. Do not delete DRM files or make registry changes unless Netflix or Microsoft provides a specific instruction for your error.

When video plays but looks soft or buffers
Lower resolution is not necessarily an app failure. The available quality can depend on your plan, title, playback settings, browser, display, cable or HDCP connection, hardware and current network conditions. For 4K or Ultra HD, use Netflix’s current browser and system requirements; meeting the browser version alone is not enough.
Buffering points first to connection stability rather than a damaged installation. Try Ethernet if available, test another network, and temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy. Netflix notes that higher playback quality uses more data; its data-use guidance lists up to 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD under the High setting, though actual use varies.
When to contact Netflix or Microsoft
- Contact Netflix if the account cannot sign in on multiple devices, a Netflix error code persists, or the service appears unavailable across devices and networks.
- Contact Microsoft if Microsoft Store cannot install or update apps, the Store is unavailable, or Windows app repair options fail.
- For a managed work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Store installation or streaming is restricted.
- If the failure began after a Windows or graphics-driver update and also affects other protected-media services, seek help from the PC or graphics manufacturer before trying invasive system changes.
When asking for help, include the Windows version, whether Netflix works in a browser, the exact symptom and error code, and which least-disruptive steps you have already tried.
