First identify which Stream Labels setup you use: Streamlabs Desktop’s built-in Stream Label source, or the separate Stream Labels app that writes text files for OBS and other streaming software. The fixes are different. For a built-in source, check for an Alert Box source and recreate the label. For the separate app, check its output folder, the file paths used by your text sources, and whether the app is running.
Identify your Stream Labels setup
Streamlabs has two distinct workflows. In Streamlabs Desktop, you can add a built-in Stream Label source. Alternatively, the separate Stream Labels app generates text files that another streaming program reads. - Built-in Desktop source: You selected a Stream Label source in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Standalone app: You use text sources in OBS or another program that read files created by the separate Stream Labels app.
Check the source type and, for the standalone setup, the file path before changing anything. Troubleshooting the wrong workflow can send you looking in the wrong place.
Fix a built-in Stream Label in Streamlabs Desktop
Check for an Alert Box source
Streamlabs says an Alert Box widget source must be present for built-in labels to work. In your scene’s Sources list, confirm that an Alert Box source exists. You can hide it if you do not want it displayed.

Recreate the affected label
- In Streamlabs Desktop, remove the affected Stream Label source from Sources.
- Add a new source, choose Stream Label, and select the relevant label file from the dropdown.
- Allow the source time to refresh, then check whether it displays current information.
If the recreated source still fails, log out of Streamlabs Desktop, restart the application, and log back in. If needed, try running Streamlabs Desktop as administrator. Fix the separate Stream Labels app and its text files
Rebuild the output folder and text sources
- Remove the text sources for the affected labels from your streaming software.
- Remove the old Stream Labels output folder and the
%appdata%Roamingstreamlabelsfolder. - Install the latest Stream Labels version from Streamlabs, sign in, and select an output directory.
- Recreate your text sources and point each one to the corresponding file in the selected output directory.
For OBS without the Streamlabs plugin, check that each text source reads the intended file in that directory. Keep the separate Stream Labels app running for the files to update in real time. Streamlabs Support’s setup guide

Wait for the refresh and check tokens
Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide says standalone text files update about once every 60 seconds. This is the vendor’s stated refresh interval, not a guarantee for every configuration. Do not hand-edit generated files: the app overwrites them. If you use tokens, check their capitalization because tokens are case-sensitive. Check for missing or stale files
If the standalone app is not creating or updating files after you have checked its output directory and the text-source paths, check whether antivirus software is interfering. Streamlabs recommends adding an exception for Stream Labels if you confirm that the software is blocking it. Antivirus interference is a possibility, not a diagnosis; the guide does not identify a particular product or setting as the cause.

When to contact Streamlabs Support
If the documented steps for your setup do not resolve the problem, contact Streamlabs Support and describe the details that distinguish your setup: whether you use the built-in Desktop source or the standalone app, which streaming software reads the labels, whether the app launches, and whether the expected files exist and update. Include the output directory and the relevant text-source file path if you use the standalone workflow. The available troubleshooting guidance does not establish one universal fix for every launch or update failure.
