How to Fix Streamlabs Desktop Capture Card Issues

A symptom-first guide to Streamlabs Desktop capture-card problems, from device conflicts and black video to stuttering, image quality, and audio routing.

If Streamlabs Desktop cannot see your capture card, shows a black or choppy picture, or has no capture-card audio, first identify the source type and symptom. A card added as a Video Capture Device has a different troubleshooting path from Game Capture or desktop audio. Then check whether another app is using the card, confirm the selected device and signal path, and work through the symptom-specific steps below.

Start with the source and symptom

In Streamlabs Desktop, a capture card normally appears as a Video Capture Device source. Game Capture, Window Capture, and desktop audio are separate source types. If the card’s Video Capture Device source is failing, follow the relevant checks below. If only a Game Capture source is black, use the separate Game Capture section.

  • Card missing from the device list: check device ownership, connections, and the selected device.
  • Device is listed but no picture appears: check the signal path and platform-specific settings.
  • Picture stutters or looks poor: check device selection, buffering, and—on applicable Elgato setups—image settings.
  • No sound: distinguish missing audio capture from a monitoring or playback problem.

The exact card, operating system, source resolution, connected console or computer, and audio routing all affect the right fix. Streamlabs’ capture-card guide was last updated April 22, 2025; device names, drivers, and menus can change, so check your card maker’s current instructions for your model. Streamlabs’ capture-card troubleshooting guide is the main reference for the steps below.

Fix a capture card that is missing or unavailable

1. Close apps that may be using the card

Quit the capture-card maker’s utility and any other streaming, recording, or preview software that might have opened the device. Streamlabs’ instruction is to “Close out of any other software that could be using the device.” If the card remains unavailable and a background process may still hold it, restart the computer and open Streamlabs Desktop before reopening other capture software.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Keep one capture-card source instance

Streamlabs recommends removing duplicate capture-card sources across scenes, adding the card in one scene, and using Add from existing in other scenes. This avoids multiple sources trying to access the same device. Check hidden or inactive scenes too; a source there may still be relevant to the device conflict.

3. Select the actual card device

Open the Video Capture Device source properties and choose the capture card or its vendor-driver entry—not a similarly named webcam or unrelated device. Some models rely on a vendor utility or a model-specific entry. Streamlabs’ instructions for the Elgato 4K60 Pro apply specifically to that card; do not assume the same selection steps fit every model.

4. Verify the physical signal path

Check that the source device is connected to the expected input and that the console or second computer is sending video through the capture card as intended. Confirm the card is connected to the host computer through the interface required by its manufacturer. If the card appears in Streamlabs but has no picture, also check that the source is configured for the format the input device is actually sending.

5. Apply platform-specific settings only when relevant

For PS4 gameplay capture, Streamlabs’ guide says to turn off HDCP at Settings > System. This is a PS4-specific step, not a general fix for capture cards or other consoles. Do not change unrelated platform security or video settings in the hope of fixing a different setup.

6. Update or reinstall the manufacturer’s driver or utility

If the device still does not appear or behave correctly, check the card maker’s official support page for the exact model and current driver or utility. Streamlabs points users toward official resources for AVerMedia, Elgato, and Razer; it also describes a Device Manager reinstall path for Magewell and Blackmagic devices. Follow the current vendor instructions for your model rather than downloading drivers from third-party driver sites.

7. Check USB power settings for applicable Elgato cards

For USB-connected Elgato cards, Streamlabs suggests trying Windows’ High Performance power mode and disabling USB selective suspend. These are model- and connection-context checks, not required settings for every capture card. If changing a power setting does not help, restore the previous setting if you prefer it.

Fix a black or absent capture-card picture

When the card is listed but the preview is black, trace the video route from the source device to the card and then into the Video Capture Device source. Check that the intended console or computer is connected to the card’s input and is outputting video. Reconfirm the device selection in source properties and apply a console-specific change, such as PS4 HDCP being disabled, only if it matches your setup.

If the signal path and device selection are correct, use the card maker’s current model-specific setup instructions to verify supported input formats and required utility settings. A black card input is not the same issue as a black Game Capture source; use the next section only when the failing source is actually Game Capture.

Fix stuttering or poor-quality capture-card video

For stuttering, check device selection and buffering

Confirm that the Video Capture Device source points to the intended card. In its properties, try setting Buffering to Disable, as Streamlabs suggests. This is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix; if it makes the picture worse or has no effect, restore the previous setting and continue checking the card, connection, and input signal.

For poor image quality on an Elgato setup

Streamlabs’ guide describes these Elgato-oriented checks:

  1. Close Streamlabs Desktop.
  2. Open the Elgato software and set its Quality slider to Best.
  3. Check the standard-definition conversion and stretch options if they apply to the incoming signal.
  4. If the card and input support it, try a custom resolution of 1920Ă—1080.

These settings are not universal. Confirm the input format and the card’s capabilities before forcing a resolution; a setting the hardware cannot accept may prevent a usable picture.

Fix missing capture-card audio

First determine whether audio is being captured

  1. Confirm that the console or computer is producing sound.
  2. Watch the relevant Streamlabs mixer meter while sound is playing.
  3. Check that the mixer channel is not muted.
  4. In the Video Capture Device source properties, inspect Audio Output Mode and any custom audio-device selection.

If the meter does not move, focus on the signal reaching the card and the source’s audio properties. If the meter moves but you cannot hear anything, capture is likely reaching the mixer; check the Windows playback output and Streamlabs’ Audio Monitoring Device instead.

Separate monitoring from output

Monitoring controls what the operator hears; it is not the same as capturing audio for the stream or recording. Check that Streamlabs is monitoring to the playback device you actually use. Enabling Monitor and Output can create an echo if the same audio also reaches you through another route, so avoid duplicating the monitoring path.

Use console routing instructions only for the matching setup

Streamlabs notes that a USB-only PS4 headset cannot send its audio through the capture card. For supported PS4 headset configurations, its guide describes changing output to a TV or AV amplifier. It also gives an Xbox One party-chat output setting. These instructions depend on the console, headset wiring, and desired chat capture; they should not be applied to other consoles or connection arrangements.

When the failing source is Game Capture

If the source that shows a black screen is Game Capture, rather than the card’s Video Capture Device source, treat it as a separate issue. Streamlabs lists these options for Game Capture:

  • Delete and re-add the Game Capture source.
  • Restart Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.
  • Disable third-party overlays that may interfere.
  • Update Streamlabs Desktop and relevant graphics or game drivers.
  • Try borderless or window capture if the game-capture mode continues to fail.

These steps address game capture, not a missing or black signal from a capture card.

Quick symptom-to-check guide

Symptom Start here
Card absent or unavailable Close other apps using it; remove duplicate sources and share one source with Add from existing; select the actual card entry.
Card listed, picture black Check the physical signal path, device selection, and applicable platform settings such as PS4 HDCP.
Picture stutters Confirm the selected card and try Buffering: Disable in the source properties.
Elgato picture looks poor Check Elgato’s Quality setting, relevant SD conversion options, and a supported custom resolution.
No sound and no mixer movement Check source audio properties, the incoming signal, and whether the console or computer is producing sound.
Mixer moves but headphones are silent Check Windows playback output and Streamlabs’ Audio Monitoring Device.
Game Capture is black Use Game Capture troubleshooting; do not treat it as a capture-card input failure.

Or let it run in the cloud
