Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Spotify Error Code 30 is a desktop connection or sign-in failure. The message mentions a firewall or proxy, but the actual conflict may also involve a VPN, antivirus web shield, DNS filter, ad blocker, hosts-file entry, router, managed network, or damaged local app data. Start with three low-risk tests: sign in at the Spotify web player, try the computer on a phone hotspot, and disconnect any VPN. These results show whether the fault is limited to the desktop app or follows the network.
What Spotify Error Code 30 means
The desktop client cannot complete a connection or login request and suggests allowing Spotify through the firewall or changing proxy settings. Spotify does not publish a current diagnostic reference that maps Error Code 30 to one exact failure. It is therefore a symptom, not proof that Windows Defender Firewall is blocking the app.
The code can result from local security software, a system or VPN proxy, DNS or router filtering, a hosts-file block, corporate or school restrictions, or corrupted Spotify cache and configuration. It is primarily a desktop-app issue; a mobile app may continue working normally.
Spotify’s current general guidance covers offline mode, connection testing, firewall permissions, updating and reinstalling. Its dedicated Error Code 30 Community thread began in 2020, so its suggestions are useful troubleshooting evidence rather than a universal, current specification: Spotify Community Error Code 30 thread.

Diagnose the failure before changing settings
Test the web player
Open open.spotify.com in a browser and sign in. If it works while the desktop app fails, focus on the app, its firewall rule, proxy, VPN, antivirus, hosts file, or cached configuration. If the web player also fails, investigate the account and network more broadly. Spotify recommends using another device or the web player to identify a device-specific problem: Spotify playback troubleshooting.
Test a phone hotspot
Temporarily connect the computer to a phone hotspot and relaunch Spotify. Success on the hotspot but not on home, office, school, hotel, or public Wi-Fi points toward router settings, DNS, parental controls, filtering, or administrator policy. Do not alter a managed network without permission. Spotify recommends testing another Wi-Fi or data connection: Spotify offline and connection guidance.
Test another account
If possible, sign in with a second Spotify account on the same computer. A second account working suggests an account or authentication issue; both accounts failing points more strongly to the computer or network. This is an isolation test, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Try the safest fixes in order
- Quit Spotify completely. Reopen it, then restart the computer if the error remains.
- Turn off Offline Mode. On macOS, open Spotify’s application menu at the top of the screen. On Windows, check the three-dot or File menu. Menu labels vary by build, so search the current Spotify menus for Offline Mode. When enabled, online content can be unavailable and non-downloaded items may appear gray. See Spotify’s offline-mode instructions and offline listening details.
- Update Spotify. Install the current update offered by the app or your installation store.
- Disconnect every VPN. Quit the VPN, not just its browser extension, and relaunch Spotify. VPN traffic filtering can interfere with protected requests; Spotify discusses VPN and proxy-related blocks at its abuse-detection support page.
- Check the proxy. Open the operating system’s network or internet proxy settings. If you did not intentionally configure one, return it to the normal automatic or no-proxy state, save, and restart Spotify. A work or school proxy may be required; ask its administrator before changing it.
- Try another network. Use the hotspot result to decide whether to focus on the device or the original network.
- Check Spotify status. Review Spotify’s status communications and Community ongoing-issues area. If every device and network fails, wait for service recovery before making destructive local changes.
Allow Spotify through the firewall and security software
Windows firewall
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Confirm Spotify is allowed on the appropriate private network.
- If Spotify is absent, choose the option to allow another app and select the installed Spotify executable.
- Restart Spotify.
Executable locations differ between the Microsoft Store package and Spotify’s direct installer, so do not assume one fixed path. The goal is an allow rule, not a permanently disabled firewall. Spotify’s guidance is at Spotify offline troubleshooting.
macOS firewall
Depending on macOS version, open System Settings → Network → Firewall or the firewall’s list of allowed applications and confirm Spotify is permitted. Configure any third-party firewall separately; its controls are not managed by Apple’s built-in list.
Antivirus and web protection
As a controlled test, pause web protection briefly, relaunch Spotify, and immediately restore protection. If the app works only while it is paused, create a Spotify exception instead of leaving protection disabled. Look for features called web shield, HTTPS scanning, network inspection, application control, or ransomware protection. Spotify’s historical Error Code 30 guidance also mentions antivirus exceptions and ad blockers: Community thread.
Check proxy, DNS, ad-blocking and privacy tools
System-wide ad blockers, DNS filtering services, router parental controls, traffic inspectors, endpoint-security products, and privacy applications can affect the desktop client even when a browser appears fine. Disable one suspect component at a time, relaunch Spotify, and record the result. Browser extensions matter mainly when the web player itself fails.

A transparent proxy imposed by a network may operate even when your computer shows no local proxy. Corporate, school, hotel, library, and public networks may deliberately restrict streaming services. Ask the network administrator rather than bypassing policy. Spotify’s historical recommendations are documented in the Error Code 30 Community thread.

Inspect the hosts file carefully
A hosts-file entry can redirect or block Spotify domains before normal DNS is used. This is an advanced step for cases that survive the safer tests.
Windows
- Back up
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. - Open a text editor with administrator privileges and inspect entries for Spotify domains or suspicious redirects.
- Remove only entries that clearly block Spotify and that you recognize as unwanted.
- Save the file and restart Spotify; restart Windows if necessary.
Do not delete the entire file: legitimate mappings may support development tools, parental controls, an organization, or other services. Spotify Community reports about Spotify entries are historical troubleshooting, not proof that every Error Code 30 case involves hosts.
macOS
macOS also has a hosts file, but paths and editing procedures can vary. Back it up first and consult current Apple documentation or Spotify Support; remove only a clearly unwanted Spotify-blocking entry.
Perform a clean reinstall when local app data may be damaged
Windows 10 and newer
- Close Spotify.
- Open Settings → Apps and the installed-apps or Apps & Features screen.
- Select Spotify and choose Uninstall.
- Reinstall from the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s official download page.
macOS
- Quit Spotify and open Finder.
- Choose Go, hold Option/Alt, and open Library.
- Delete the cache folders
com.spotify.clientandcom.spotify.client.helper. - In Library → Application Support, delete the Spotify folder.
- Restart the Mac and reinstall Spotify.
Use Spotify’s platform-specific instructions at Spotify’s reinstall guide. Reinstalling removes offline music and podcast downloads, which must be downloaded again; playlists and account data remain server-side. A reinstall cannot remove a router block, managed proxy, VPN conflict, firewall policy, or hosts-file entry. If one package fails, testing the official direct installer versus the Microsoft Store version can isolate a packaging-specific problem; neither is proven universally superior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Error Code 30 still appears
Isolate startup software
On Windows, try Safe Mode with Networking as a temporary diagnostic. On macOS, use a controlled startup or login-item isolation method appropriate to your macOS version. If Spotify works only there, inspect recently installed VPNs, antivirus tools, ad blockers, traffic monitors, and startup applications. Safe Mode is not a permanent solution.
Choose the right escalation path
- Spotify Support: account, authentication, or application problems.
- Network administrator: work, school, hotel, library, or public Wi-Fi restrictions.
- Security-software vendor: protection that blocks Spotify despite an allow rule.
- ISP or router manufacturer: failure limited to your home network.
Include your operating-system version, Spotify installation source and app version, exact wording or a screenshot, web-player result, second-account result, hotspot result, VPN/proxy/security tools, and every step that changed the behavior. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spotify Error Code 30 definitely caused by a firewall?
No. A firewall is one possibility; VPNs, proxies, antivirus filters, DNS or router controls, hosts-file entries, managed networks, and damaged app data can produce the same desktop symptom.
Does a VPN cause Error Code 30?
It can contribute to connection or protection blocks. Disconnect the VPN completely, relaunch Spotify, and restore it only after testing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will reinstalling Spotify delete my playlists?
No. Playlists and account data are stored online, but local offline music and podcast downloads must be downloaded again.
Why does Spotify work in a browser but not the desktop app?
The desktop app and browser can use different proxy, certificate, firewall, filtering, or cached-configuration paths. Focus on the desktop installation and local security settings.
Should I delete the hosts file?
No. Back it up and remove only a clearly unwanted Spotify-blocking entry.
Can I fix the error without disabling antivirus?
Usually. A brief pause can be a diagnostic test, but the safer lasting fix is a Spotify exception in the product’s web shield or application controls.
