How to Fix Silence on a 24/7 YouTube Radio Station Stream

Trace a silent 24/7 YouTube radio stream from the listener’s player through the source, encoder, YouTube preview, and public stream—with checks for OBS and audio settings.

Start by finding the point where the audio disappears: the listener’s player, your audio source, the encoder, YouTube’s incoming stream, or public playback. If only one listener is affected, check that device first. If multiple listeners hear silence—or YouTube’s Live Control Room reports “Your encoder is sending no audio”—trace the signal from source to stream before changing equipment.

Locate the silence before changing settings

Check whether the problem affects one listener or several. When practical, test the public stream on another device or network. Silence on just one device points first to its player, volume, mute state, or selected audio output. Reports from multiple listeners make the encoder or incoming stream a more useful place to investigate; YouTube notes that reports across multiple connections can indicate an encoder issue.

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview and health messages. YouTube’s Live streaming error messages guidance includes “Your encoder is sending no audio” and says the ingestion stream should contain one audio stream. Multiple audio streams can also cause ingestion problems. A warning describes what YouTube is receiving; it does not, by itself, prove that the physical audio source has failed. Record the exact warning and its time before changing anything.

Trace audio from the source into the encoder

  1. Play a known-good source. Use a familiar audio file or a test tone at a low, safe level. Confirm the intended player is actually playing and that its application volume is up.
  2. Check the operating system and connections. Inspect the system mixer for mute or low volume, verify the selected output and capture device, and check any physical connection and selected input in the chain.
  3. Watch the encoder’s input meter. In OBS, play the source and watch the relevant mixer meter. If the meter does not move, confirm the correct device is selected, the source is active, and no source filter is suppressing audio. OBS says an absent input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS; see its Audio Mixer Guide and Audio Mixer Technical Details.
  4. Check the outgoing mix. A moving meter is not proof that the intended sound reaches the stream. Check the source’s mute button and fader, its routing to the stream mix, and whether the active scene or program includes it. OBS sources can be scene-specific. Duplicating the same device globally and in a scene can also create echo; see OBS Audio Sources.
  5. Listen to an encoder-side recording. Make a short recording and play it back. Monitoring can help locate a signal, but it is not a substitute for confirming that the outgoing recording contains sound. OBS recommends listening early in the chain and again at the encoder, then checking a recording before returning to a live broadcast.

Check YouTube’s audio format and stream count

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as live encoder audio codecs. For stereo, its encoder settings guidance recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. YouTube’s error guidance separately flags incorrect sample rate, low audio bitrate, no audio stream, and multiple audio streams.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the current Live Control Room warning and YouTube’s supported codec guidance rather than assuming that an encoder preset is correct. If you adjust a setting, change one thing at a time, then check the encoder output and YouTube’s health message again. Do not add a second track or duplicate a device as a blind fix: YouTube’s no-audio guidance calls for one audio stream in the ingestion feed.

Compare what you hear at each stage

Check the encoder-side recording, Live Control Room preview, and public player separately. YouTube recommends previewing before going live, monitoring the stream, and checking local archive files in its streaming tips. Use the pattern below to choose the next check; these are diagnostic leads, not guarantees.

What you observe Next check
Only one listener reports silence Check that listener’s player state, device mute and volume, browser or app, and selected audio output.
OBS source meter has no activity Check source playback, application and system volume, selected capture device, connections, and filters. OBS says a missing input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS.
OBS meter moves, but the encoder recording is silent Check mute and fader states, stream routing, track assignment, and whether the active scene includes the intended source.
The encoder recording has sound, but YouTube flags no audio Check the ingested audio track count and codec and sample-rate settings; compare them with the exact Live Control Room message.
The local file and preview have sound, but public listeners report silence Test another client or network. If the issue persists, preserve timestamps and warnings and report the problem through YouTube.

Keep a 24/7 station verifiable

Build brief checks of the source meter, Live Control Room preview, and a local recording into station maintenance. Test backup-encoder or restart procedures during a planned maintenance window rather than relying on an untested recovery step. YouTube’s general streaming tips recommend continuous monitoring and backup-encoder testing, but they do not establish a special automatic silence alarm or guaranteed unattended recovery procedure for always-on radio streams.
