First identify where the picture goes black: in the OBS preview, in an OBS recording or program output, or only on YouTube. For a single cartoon file, check its OBS Media Source and Loop setting; for a playlist, check the VLC Video source, VLC installation and Loop Playlist setting. Then verify source visibility and layer order, and make a short test recording or stream before relying on the setup live. The title alone does not reveal which cause applies.
1. Identify the source and where the screen is black
In OBS, look in the Sources dock and identify the source used for the cartoon. A single local file normally uses Media Source; a playlist can use VLC Video. Also note where the black picture appears: in the source or scene preview, in an OBS recording or program output, or only in the YouTube stream. That distinction helps narrow the fault without assuming a cause.
- Black in the OBS preview: inspect the media source, its visibility, position and whether another source covers it.
- Preview is visible but an OBS recording or program output is black: make a short recording or test stream and check the resulting output before going live.
- OBS output is visible but YouTube is black: compare the OBS output with the YouTube delivery. The official OBS guidance cited here does not establish a specific cause or decision tree for this case.
Write down your operating system, OBS version, source type and media format if the issue continues; these details matter when seeking further support.
2. Fix looping for a single cartoon file
OBS’s built-in Media Source supports common video and audio file types. Its Loop property replays the file after playback completes. If you have one local cartoon, use this source and check that Loop is enabled. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide (published January 11, 2022).

- In the Sources dock, select the cartoon’s Media Source. If you do not have one yet, add a Media Source and choose the local file.
- Open the source’s properties and confirm the intended file is selected.
- Enable Loop, then apply the change.
- Check the preview after the file reaches its end to confirm playback starts again.
If the file is unsupported, missing or not the file you intended, the Loop setting alone will not resolve it. Confirm the selected file and test playback before the live session.
3. Fix looping for a playlist
Use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist. It requires VLC to be installed; on a 64-bit OBS setup, OBS’s guide says to use 64-bit VLC. The source includes a Loop Playlist setting. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its 64-bit or 32-bit edition to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add or select a VLC Video source in the Sources dock.
- In the source properties, load the intended playlist and verify its entries.
- Enable Loop Playlist, apply the change and check that the playlist advances and returns to its beginning.
If OBS cannot use the VLC source, first verify VLC is installed and that the editions match. If you only need to repeat one file, use Media Source instead of introducing a playlist dependency.
4. Check visibility, layer order and framing
OBS renders sources according to their order in the Sources dock: sources higher in the list appear above those beneath them and can obscure them. The OBS Sources guide (published January 11, 2022) explains visibility, ordering, position and sizing.

- Make sure the eye/visibility control for the cartoon source is enabled.
- Look for a source above it that could cover the video; temporarily hide that source to check.
- Check the cartoon’s position and size in the preview. A source placed outside the visible canvas may appear absent.
- If needed, move the cartoon above an overlapping source in the Sources list, while preserving any overlays you want in front of it.
5. Test the actual output before going live
A visible preview is useful but is not a substitute for checking the final output. OBS’s Quick Start guide (published August 25, 2021) recommends a short recording or stream test before the first live session.
- Record a short section or run a brief test stream using the same scene and media source you plan to use.
- Play back the recording, or inspect the test stream on YouTube, and compare it with the OBS preview.
- Check both picture and sound, including the transition when the file or playlist loops.
- Only rely on the setup for a longer live session after the test output is correct.
6. Use capture-source fixes only for capture sources
A cartoon loaded as Media Source or VLC Video is not the same as a game or display capture. OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide concerns Game Capture, while its laptop troubleshooting guide discusses dual-GPU laptops and display-capture behavior. Those remedies are relevant only if the black image comes from the corresponding capture source; the guides do not establish a GPU mismatch as the cause of a local media file appearing black.
