Then make a local recording and compare it with the live stream. These two checks help locate the fault: before or inside OBS, in the computer’s audio or encoding path, or between OBS and the streaming platform. Don’t change bitrate or buy equipment until you know which part is failing.
Find where the audio disappears
- Watch the OBS Audio Mixer during a dropout. If the relevant meter stops moving, check the selected microphone, mixer output or audio interface in Settings → Audio, and confirm the intended source is present in the active scene. OBS recommends checking the meter and manually selecting devices when the meter is inactive or the wrong device is captured. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Record a representative service segment locally. Include the kind of speech and music used in the service. Compare the recording with what viewers hear. If the recording also drops out, investigate the audio signal entering OBS, the computer and its connections. If the recording is clean but the live stream is not, focus on stream delivery and the platform’s stream health. - Check OBS’s connection and performance indicators. Rising dropped-frame counts point to a connection or ingest problem, not necessarily a missing audio input. Encoding or rendering overload is a separate issue: it can interrupt the computer’s ability to process the stream.
Note the time of each dropout and whether the mixer meter, local recording, dropped-frame count or overload warning changed at the same time. That record makes the next checks more targeted.
If the OBS meter stops moving
Verify the signal path
- Confirm the mixer is sending the intended output or bus, and that its output is connected to the input OBS is meant to capture.
- Check that the audio interface is powered and still recognized by the operating system. If it has disappeared, reconnect it and verify that the expected device is selected in OBS.
- In OBS, check Settings → Audio for global audio devices and inspect the active scene for an Audio Input Capture source. Make sure the selected source corresponds to the actual mixer or interface connection.
- If different scenes need different inputs, use scene-specific capture sources rather than relying on one global device setting.
Remove duplicate capture
If the same physical device is enabled under Settings → Audio and also added as an Audio Input Capture source in a scene, disable one of those capture paths. OBS warns that capturing the same device in both places can cause echo; duplicate routing can also make it harder to identify which source is active. On Linux, OBS uses ALSA or PulseAudio capture sources. OBS Audio Sources.
Separate silence from distortion
Watch the mixer levels while the sound is present. Keep delivered output peaks below 0 dBFS, the digital full-scale maximum. Audio above that level can clip and sound distorted, but clipping is not the same fault as a signal that intermittently disappears. OBS Audio Meter.

If the local recording is clean but the live stream cuts out
Check dropped frames and upload stability
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Measure stable upload at the church during the hours the service is streamed; a speed result at another time or location may not reflect busy-period conditions. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate, not a guarantee. Leave capacity for other traffic and test the actual stream. - Try a wired network connection rather than Wi-Fi, which OBS notes may be unstable.
- Review the selected streaming service or ingest server, VPN, security software and network equipment.
- If the issue persists, ask the ISP about the route and stability to the streaming service.
- Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to help avoid dropped frames, but it is a mitigation rather than a fix for an unstable connection.
India’s location makes the church’s own last-mile connection, local congestion and ISP route relevant to testing, but there is no single India-wide upload target that diagnoses this problem. Use the service-window measurements and OBS indicators rather than assuming a provider or national network is at fault.

Reduce load only when OBS reports overload
If OBS reports encoding or rendering overload, or the computer is saturated, simplify scenes, reduce browser sources and filters, and lower output resolution or frame rate. Scene composition uses GPU resources, so complex scenes can add rendering demand. These changes are appropriate for overload; they are not the first response to a mixer meter that has gone still. If the church streams to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder guidance is platform-specific: it recommends RTMPS and lists AAC or MP3 audio. It specifies a sample rate of 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround, with recommended audio bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These specifications are not a remedy for an intermittent dropout. Match the settings across the audio workflow where applicable, follow YouTube’s current guidance for the stream format, and run a preflight with representative sound and movement. The destination is not specified for every OBS setup, so these YouTube recommendations apply only if the church uses YouTube Live. The available guidance does not establish that continuous runtime alone causes OBS audio to cut out or that all platforms have the same runtime limit. If a stream is exceptionally long, check the destination platform’s current policy.
When to replace or add audio hardware
Start with the equipment already installed: confirm the mixer output or bus, interface power and operating-system recognition, cabling, and OBS source selection. A compatible USB audio interface is a possible option if the mixer has no usable computer input path or the existing interface is confirmed faulty—not a default fix for an unexplained dropout.

Before choosing an interface, check that its inputs match the mixer’s output, that its drivers support the church’s operating system, and that its power and connector requirements fit the setup. Decide whether the church needs stereo or multiple discrete channels.
