Max Error Code 21 is commonly associated with playback trouble, but Max does not publish a single, code-specific explanation that applies to every device. The cause may be a temporary app fault, damaged cache, outdated software, unstable network, browser interference, device compatibility, or a Max-side problem.
Start with the least disruptive checks: force-close Max, try another title, restart the device, test the connection, and update Max and the device. Clear app data, sign out, reinstall, and disable VPNs or browser extensions only if the earlier steps do not help.
What Max Error Code 21 means
Third-party troubleshooting guides commonly describe Code 21 as a content-playback error. Max’s own support material provides general error-code troubleshooting rather than a verified definition of Code 21, so no single cause should be assumed.
The failure pattern is more useful than the number itself:

| What fails | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| One movie or episode | The title may have temporary playback, regional, or metadata trouble. Try another title and retry later. |
| Every title on one device | App state, cache, device software, storage, or that device’s network configuration. |
| Every title on several devices | Account or entitlement, home network, or a Max service problem. |
| Browser playback only | Cookies, extensions, ad blockers, browser version, or protected-content settings. |
Max recommends force-closing the app, trying another device, restarting, checking connectivity, clearing cache or data where supported, and reinstalling for general error codes: Max error-code troubleshooting.
Fix Max Error Code 21 in order
1. Force-close Max and reopen it
- Exit the video.
- Fully close Max from the device’s recent-apps or app-management screen.
- Open Max again and retry the title.
- If it fails, test a different movie or episode.
Returning to a TV’s Home screen or pressing Back may leave the app running. Use the platform’s actual force-stop or close command when available.
2. Try another title
If another title plays, the original item may be temporarily unavailable or have title-specific playback data. Do not reinstall the app solely because one program fails; note the title and retry later.
3. Restart the device completely
- Sign out of Max first if the app still responds.
- Use the device’s system Restart command, or power it off completely.
- For hardware that supports it, unplug it and wait about 10–20 seconds.
- Power it back on, open Max, and test playback.
A remote-control shutdown may only put a television into standby. A full restart or power cycle clears more stuck app and system processes. Max documents platform-specific restart methods at its troubleshooting guide.

4. Check the internet connection
Run a speed test on the same network as the affected device. Max lists 5 Mbps minimum download speed for HD streaming and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Speed alone is not proof of a healthy connection: packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, DNS failures, or a failing router can interrupt playback.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
As an isolation test, try Max on a phone hotspot or another trusted network. If it works there, the original Wi-Fi, router, DNS, VPN, proxy, or ISP path is more likely involved. If it fails across multiple networks and devices, a Max-side or account-level issue becomes more plausible. This is a diagnostic inference, not a Max diagnosis.
5. Update Max and the device
Update both software layers, then restart and test again. Current menu labels vary by model, but these are documented examples:
- Android: Play Store → search for Max → Update.
- iPhone or iPad: App Store → search for Max → Update.
- Fire tablet: Amazon Appstore → Max → Update.
- Fire TV: Highlight Max → Menu → More Info → Update. Device software: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for System Update.
- Roku: Highlight Max → Star → check for an update. Roku software: Settings → System → System update → Check now.
- Samsung TV: Check for updates for both Max and the television software.
- VIZIO: Settings/Menu → Admin & Privacy → Check for Updates.
See Max’s current platform instructions for model-specific variations.
6. Clear Max’s cache or app data
Clearing cache removes temporary files and usually preserves the installation. Clearing storage or data is a stronger reset that normally signs you out and may remove locally stored information.
Android phone or tablet
- Open Settings and search for Max.
- Open Max’s app settings, then Storage & cache (or Storage).
- Choose Clear cache.
- If necessary, choose Clear storage or Clear data.
- Reopen Max and sign in again if prompted.
Fire tablet
- Settings → Apps & Games → Manage All Applications.
- Select Max → Force Stop → Clear Cache.
- If needed, choose Clear Data, then reopen Max.
Fire TV
- Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications.
- Select Max → Force Stop → Clear Cache.
- If needed, choose Clear Data, then reopen Max.
Android TV
- Settings → Apps → Max.
- Choose Clear cache, then Clear data if required.
- Open Max and sign in again.
Samsung TV
On supported models: Home → Settings → Support → Device Care → Manage Storage → Max → View Details → Clear cache. Clear-data controls are not available on every Samsung TV, and labels vary by model.

7. Sign out and sign back in
Use this when playback broke after a password, subscription, or provider change, or when the error follows your account across devices.
- Open Max’s profile or settings menu.
- Choose Sign Out.
- Close or restart Max.
- Sign in again and retry playback.
Do not use “sign out all devices” as a routine fix; it is disruptive and is mainly useful for a specific account-session or device-limit problem.

Reinstallation repairs a damaged local installation but is not guaranteed to resolve Code 21. Confirm that you know your Max email and password first; downloads and local data may be removed.
- Uninstall or delete Max.
- Restart the device if the platform requires it.
- Install Max again from the official app store.
- Sign in and test a title.
Roku users billed through Roku may be unable to remove Max while the subscription remains active. Max documents that limitation and reinstall steps at its support page.
9. Disable VPNs, proxies, unusual DNS, and browser extensions
Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy, close Max completely, restart it, and try again. These tools can alter routing, region detection, authentication, or location checks. Do not use a VPN to bypass Max availability or content restrictions.

When Max itself may be having trouble
Stop repeating local resets when every title fails on several devices, Max’s website or account pages also behave abnormally, and other streaming services work normally on the same connection. Check Max’s official support channels and a reputable outage-monitoring service, then retry later. User-report graphs can be delayed or overstate a localized problem, so they are not definitive proof of an outage.

- Samsung TV: Cache and data controls depend on the model; also update Samsung firmware.
- Roku: Update and restart Roku. Active subscriptions billed through Roku can prevent app removal.
- Fire TV: Force-stop Max, clear cache/data, update Fire TV, and reinstall if needed.
- Only cellular data fails: Test Wi-Fi; Max’s guidance recommends switching from cellular to wireless where applicable.
- Recently changed provider or password: Sign out and back in; partner authentication or entitlement may be involved.
- One downloaded title fails: Delete that download and stream it instead. This is a practical test, not a documented Code 21-specific fix.
- Older device: Verify current Max compatibility before repeating resets. Device support changes, so use Max’s current requirements rather than an old static list.
What to send Max Support
Contact Max when the ordered fixes fail, especially if Code 21 appears everywhere. Include:
- The exact code and on-screen wording.
- Device make, model, and operating-system or firmware version.
- Max app or browser version, if visible.
- Whether one title or every title fails.
- Results from another device and another network.
- Date and approximate time of the failure.
- A screenshot or short recording, if possible.
- Whether the subscription is billed by Max, a cable company, mobile provider, app store, Roku, or another partner.
Max specifically advises recording the error code before contacting support. Older menus, search results, or support pages may still say “HBO Max”; that is the former branding for the service now called Max.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Max Error Code 21 proof that Max is down?
No. It can be caused by a local app, device, network, browser, or service problem. A widespread failure across titles, devices, and networks makes a Max-side issue more plausible.
Will reinstalling Max delete my account?
No. It removes the local app installation, but you must sign in again and may lose downloads or other local data.
Should I cancel or reactivate my subscription?
Not based on Code 21 alone. The reviewed Max guidance does not establish that this code means a canceled or invalid subscription; investigate playback and account-session issues first.
Why does Max work on my phone but not my TV?
That pattern points toward the TV’s app state, firmware, storage, compatibility, or network path. Update and fully restart the TV, then clear Max data where supported.
