YouTube says it balances quiet and loud playback levels to reduce variations. If dialogue is hard to hear under background sound, try Voice boost in the player’s audio settings instead; it automatically turns Stable volume off.
Turn on Stable volume
- Start a video in the playlist.
- Open the player’s Settings menu.
- Select Stable volume if the option is shown.
- Continue through the playlist and check whether the changes in loudness are less distracting.
YouTube says Stable volume is on by default where supported and “balances the range between quiet and loud, continuously adjusting volume levels to reduce variations in sound.” Its availability depends on the video, device, and app or player version; YouTube notes that it is not available for all videos. It is off for YouTube Music and official music videos. YouTube Help: Stable volume
Try Voice boost for hard-to-hear speech
If the problem is dialogue masked by music, ambience, or other background sound, look for Voice boost in the player’s audio settings. YouTube describes it as reducing background sounds and highlighting vocals. It is intended to help speech stand out, not to make every playlist item equally loud. Turning it on automatically turns Stable volume off, so the two controls should not be expected to work together.
If the setting is missing
- Check whether the video is a YouTube Music item or an official music video; YouTube says Stable volume is off for these.
- Try another video in the playlist. The option may not be available for every title.
- Check the player on the device you are using. YouTube provides computer and TV instructions, but feature availability can vary by device and app version.
If neither control appears, there is no supported viewer-side switch to force consistent loudness across those videos. Do not assume the absence means your device is faulty.

Why playlist videos sound different
Videos may have been mixed, mastered, or recorded at different perceived loudness levels. Loudness normalization estimates how loud a program sounds and adjusts its gain. It is different from peak normalization, which is concerned with signal peaks rather than perceived loudness across varied audio.
The Audio Engineering Society gives an illustrative example: content measured at -27 LUFS would need a +3 LU gain change to reach an example target of -24 LUFS. Those figures explain the arithmetic; -24 LUFS is not established here as YouTube’s target. Audio Engineering Society: Loudness Project

When the playlist is yours to edit
If you own or can edit the source recordings, you can normalize their loudness before uploading or assembling the playlist. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect measures how loud a selection sounds and applies a gain change toward a target you choose; its manual lists making a relatively uniform playlist as one use case. That workflow changes audio you control. It cannot change unrelated videos already hosted by other channels. Audacity manual: Loudness Normalization
