Hulu Error Code 301 signals a playback failure, but Hulu’s public Help Center does not give the code a definitive, dedicated explanation. It can stem from a temporary service issue or something local to the title, device, app, browser, or network. Start by checking whether Hulu is broadly affected, then try the least disruptive fixes before clearing data or changing network settings.
What does Hulu Error Code 301 mean?
The error usually appears when Hulu cannot start or continue playback. Third-party guides often discuss it alongside P-DEV301, but Hulu’s current public Help Center does not confirm that the codes are identical or define one specific cause. See Hulu’s Help Center for its general support resources.
The code alone does not prove your internet is too slow. A service interruption, a problem with one title, stale app or browser data, device software, network routing, or an account session could be involved. Note the complete code shown on screen; do not assume that 301, P-DEV301, and other Hulu playback codes are interchangeable.
Before troubleshooting, check whether Hulu is down
- Try a different Hulu title. If only one title fails, the issue may be limited to that title rather than the whole service.
- Try Hulu on another device or browser, preferably on the same network.
- Check whether other streaming services work on the affected device.
- Check Hulu’s official streaming support for help with a possible service issue.
If multiple Hulu titles fail on several devices, especially across different networks, repeated local fixes are unlikely to help. Wait and try again later or contact Hulu support. Roku’s playback troubleshooting guidance likewise advises checking for a service interruption when an app or multiple titles will not play.

Fix 1: Close and reopen Hulu
Exit the video, fully close the Hulu app or browser tab, reopen Hulu, and try the same title. If it still fails, test a second title. In a browser, refresh the page or close and reopen the browser; on a phone, TV, or streaming device, use its app switcher or force-close control if available. This quick reset can clear a temporary playback state without signing you out.
Fix 2: Restart your device and router
Restart the playback device
Restart your phone, tablet, computer, smart TV, Roku, streaming stick, or game console using its normal restart option. If there is no restart menu, unplug the device from power, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect it, and retry Hulu.
Power-cycle the router or modem
- Unplug the router or modem from power.
- Wait at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Wait for the network connection to return, reopen Hulu, and test playback.
This is a restart, not a factory reset. Do not press a recessed factory-reset button unless your internet provider tells you to; a factory reset can erase network settings. Roku also recommends restarting the device and resetting the Wi-Fi/router connection in its playback instructions.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Fix 3: Check and improve your internet connection
Use comparisons to narrow down the problem before changing settings:
- Try Hulu on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- If practical, try the affected device on a phone hotspot. If Hulu works there but not on home Wi-Fi, the issue may involve the router, local network, DNS, filtering, or internet provider.
- Check whether other services load normally and whether the connection drops.
- Pause large downloads, video calls, gaming downloads, or other streams, then try Hulu again.
- Move closer to the router, reconnect to Wi-Fi, or use Ethernet for a stationary TV or streaming box if available.
A speed test can measure available bandwidth, but it cannot by itself establish that bandwidth caused Error 301. Hulu’s connection guidance and buffering support cover general playback and connection issues; Roku also suggests checking the connection and reducing competing network use. If the connection repeatedly drops, contact your internet provider.
Fix 4: Clear browser data or refresh the Hulu app
Browser
Clear cached files and Hulu site data, then restart the browser and sign in again if clearing cookies removed your session. Hulu provides browser-cache guidance. In Chrome, a typical path is Menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data; labels can vary by version and browser.

Android
Open Settings → Apps → Hulu → Storage → Clear cache (menu names vary by device). Try clearing the cache first. Clear storage or Clear data is more disruptive: it can sign you out and remove app settings, so use it only if clearing the cache does not help.
iPhone or iPad
iOS does not provide a universal Hulu-specific cache button. Delete the Hulu app, restart the device, reinstall Hulu from the App Store, and sign in again.

Roku, smart TVs, and other streaming devices
Use the device’s app-management controls to clear Hulu’s cache or data if those controls are available; menu options differ by model. On Roku, select Home, highlight Hulu, press the Star button, and choose Remove app. Then reinstall Hulu from the Roku Channel Store. Roku documents these steps in its app troubleshooting guidance.

Fix 5: Update Hulu, your browser, and your device
Check for updates at all three levels: the Hulu app, the browser if you watch on the web, and the device’s operating system or firmware. Install available updates, restart the device, then retry playback. Update menus vary across TVs and streaming devices, so look for an app or system option labelled Check for updates rather than expecting the same path everywhere.
On Roku, highlight the app from the Home screen, press Star, and choose Check for Updates. Roku includes that step in its current playback guidance.

Temporarily disable VPNs and proxies
Turn off any VPN app, browser proxy, smart-DNS or location-masking service, or router-level VPN, then fully close Hulu and retry on your normal local network. Hulu has specific anonymous-proxy guidance. A VPN is not a confirmed cause of every 301 error, and disabling one may not resolve an unrelated playback issue. Do not use VPN settings to bypass Hulu’s regional restrictions.

Sign out and back in
If Hulu works on other devices but not the affected one, sign out of Hulu there, restart the device, sign back in, and retry. Roku’s sign-in guidance explains signing in to apps on Roku; billing or subscription support may depend on whether you subscribed through Hulu or another seller.
Check automatic date and time
As a lower-priority check, enable automatic date, time, and time-zone settings on the device. Incorrect system time can interfere with authentication or playback in some apps, but Hulu does not identify it as a confirmed Error 301 cause.
Change DNS only as a late diagnostic
If Hulu works on a hotspot but repeatedly fails on home Wi-Fi after a router restart, a DNS problem is one possibility. DNS changes are optional and technical—not a general way to increase streaming speed. Some third-party troubleshooting guides suggest Google Public DNS: IPv4 preferred 8.8.8.8 and alternate 8.8.4.4. These are not a Hulu-endorsed Error 301 remedy. Record your current DNS settings before changing them so you can restore them; a change can disrupt parental controls, local filtering, or other services.
What to do if Error 301 remains
- Write down the full error code and whether one title or all titles fail.
- Note the device model, operating system or firmware, and browser or Hulu app version.
- Record whether Hulu works on another device, another browser, or another network.
- Contact Hulu streaming support with those details.
If the problem is limited to one device, app data, updates, or device compatibility remain useful areas to investigate. If the same failure occurs across devices and networks, get Hulu’s help rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling apps. A factory reset or replacement device is not a sensible first response to this code.
