Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst identify where the stream is failing: at the video input, when a finite file reaches the end, on FFmpeg’s RTMP/RTMPS connection to YouTube, or because the FFmpeg process exits. Each failure needs a different remedy. HTTP reconnect flags apply to HTTP inputs; they are not universal YouTube output-recovery switches. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer. If a local fireplace video is simply ending, loop it with -stream_loop -1.
Diagnose which part of the stream stopped
Read the FFmpeg log around the first error, not just the last line. Identify the input protocol and output destination, then match the symptom to the failing boundary.
| What you observe | Likely boundary | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input errors or unexpected EOF | Input source | Whether the source is HTTP, whether it is intended to be an endless feed, and which HTTP failure is reported. |
| The fireplace clip ends cleanly | Normal end-of-file | Whether the input is a finite file that should repeat. |
| “Broken pipe” or write errors to YouTube | Publishing output | The RTMP/RTMPS connection and whether the output is using a recovery-capable muxer. |
| FFmpeg exits | Process | Why the process terminated. Input reconnect options and FIFO output recovery do not restart an exited process. |
| FFmpeg appears connected but YouTube reports poor health | Ingest or encoding | Encoder settings and the Live Control Room’s stream health messages. |
Loop a finite fireplace video
For a local video that should repeat indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i. This handles normal EOF; it does not recover a broken connection to YouTube.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 [encoding and mapping options] [output options] [YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest URL and stream key]
This is a pattern, not a complete command. Supply the correct video/audio mapping, codecs, output format, ingest URL, and credentials for your setup. Keep the stream key private; do not expose it in logs, screenshots, or published examples.

Reconnect an HTTP input only when the source is HTTP
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options govern HTTP inputs. The documented options cover different conditions: reconnect handles disconnection before EOF; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error; reconnect_on_network_error and reconnect_on_http_error address network errors and selected HTTP status errors; and reconnect_streamed applies to streamed, non-seekable inputs. Choose based on the actual source and logged failure, rather than enabling every flag by habit.
reconnect_at_eof is useful only when EOF is a disconnect symptom on a source expected to continue. If EOF means the source genuinely ended, treating it as an error can produce an unwanted retry loop. These controls do not repair the RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube.

Recover a failed YouTube output with FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer
For output-side network recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO pseudo-muxer. It separates encoding from muxing with a packet queue and a separate thread; attempt_recovery tells it to try restarting a failed output. FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example is:

-f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
The example attempts recovery every second, indefinitely, during a temporary network failure. It is not a guarantee against every failure: a permanent error, invalid stream key, YouTube live-session or account issue, prolonged outage, dead input, or terminated FFmpeg process may need a different fix.
Understand the queue tradeoff
The FIFO queue can fill while output recovery is underway. Blocking preserves queued packets but can stall real-time progress; dropping overflow packets lets processing continue in real time but may omit part of the stream. The example uses -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, so dropped content is a real tradeoff, not a seamless-recovery promise.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check YouTube ingest and stream health
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. These settings support ingest compatibility; they do not make a failed connection self-healing. Review YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance.
- Confirm the encoder is publishing to the correct YouTube ingest destination and that the stream key is current and kept secret.
- Use RTMPS where supported, and configure CBR with a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Test before starting the live stream, including audio and representative video movement.
- During the event, monitor stream health and review YouTube’s messages in Live Control Room.
When FFmpeg exits, address the process separately
FIFO output recovery can retry a failed output, but it does not bring back an FFmpeg process that has exited. If the process terminates, investigate the exit reason and use an external supervisor or service manager appropriate to your operating system and deployment. A supervisor can restart a process; it does not correct a bad input, broken encoding configuration, invalid key, or persistent YouTube-side problem.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- The input reports EOF, but the local clip should repeat: put
-stream_loop -1before the corresponding-i. - An HTTP live source disconnects before EOF: consider HTTP input reconnect behavior for that failure. Do not mistake an RTMP output error for an HTTP input problem.
- An HTTP source reaches EOF unexpectedly: determine whether EOF means the source ended or was interrupted before choosing
reconnect_at_eof. - You see output write errors or “Broken pipe” to YouTube: inspect publishing connectivity and consider FIFO output recovery; HTTP input flags do not fix the output.
- The stream falls behind or content is missing during recovery: assess the FIFO queue’s blocking-versus-dropping behavior. Dropping overflow can keep real-time progress but omit packets; blocking can stall.
- FFmpeg has stopped entirely: inspect why it exited and address process supervision separately.
- YouTube receives a stream but reports health warnings: check RTMPS, CBR, keyframe frequency, and Live Control Room messages before changing unrelated reconnect flags.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded fireplace videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping an FFmpeg computer running. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it handles any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
