How to Fix FFmpeg Reconnect Errors on a YouTube Radio Livestream

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags do not recover an RTMP output to YouTube. Identify the failing layer, then check the appropriate retry method, stream key, encoder settings, and upload bandwidth.

First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg’s -reconnect options apply to an HTTP input, not to the RTMP/RTMPS output sent to YouTube. For a temporary RTMP output failure, FFmpeg documents a separate recovery pattern using the FIFO muxer. Then verify the YouTube stream key, encoder settings, and upload capacity. These steps address different failure points; none guarantees a seamless stream resumption.

Find the failing connection before changing flags

Read the command and the first meaningful error line. Note each input after -i, the destination URL, and whether FFmpeg exits. Keep the exact command for diagnosis, but redact the stream key before sharing it.

  • HTTP input problem: A source URL after -i disconnects or ends unexpectedly. HTTP protocol reconnect options may apply to that input.
  • RTMP/RTMPS output problem: FFmpeg reports a write or output failure while sending to YouTube. HTTP input reconnect flags do not provide RTMP output recovery.
  • Process exit: FFmpeg terminates. A supervisor may relaunch it, but a restart does not correct bad credentials, invalid media, or an unavailable ingest endpoint.

FFmpeg documents the HTTP options in its protocol documentation and RTMP output recovery through the FIFO muxer documentation.

If an HTTP source is disconnecting

Use reconnect options only for the relevant HTTP input, and check that your installed FFmpeg build supports them. Place protocol options so they apply to the intended input; do not treat them as general output switches.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • -reconnect 1 retries a disconnect before the input reaches EOF.
  • -reconnect_at_eof 1 treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection; FFmpeg notes this can be useful for live or endless streams.
  • -reconnect_streamed 1 enables reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable inputs.
  • -reconnect_delay_max, -reconnect_max_retries, and -reconnect_delay_total_max limit retry delays or attempts. Choose values according to the source and how long a gap you can tolerate.

These settings cannot repair an expired or inaccessible source URL, and they do not reconnect FFmpeg’s outgoing YouTube connection. Consult the HTTP protocol options for exact option behavior in your FFmpeg version.

If FFmpeg cannot write to YouTube over RTMP

For temporary output failures, FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that keeps processing in real time and attempts recovery. Its example uses these core options:

-f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1

Adapt the documented example to your existing output command and verify it with your source, FFmpeg build, and YouTube ingest configuration. The one-second recovery wait in the example is a setting, not a promise that a failed stream will resume within one second. FIFO recovery does not ensure uninterrupted playback or guarantee that YouTube will accept a resumed connection.

See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation for the complete RTMP example and options.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and the selected stream key match the values configured in FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the current ingest details shown for your stream.
  2. If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement before testing. A stream key is a credential: never post it in a command, screenshot, or log.
  3. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for supported codecs, bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval and a maximum of four seconds.
  4. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate table rather than an old fixed bitrate copied from a tutorial. Unsupported codecs or incorrect bitrate settings can cause stream errors.

Official references: YouTube’s encoder settings, stream key guidance, and encoder setup.

Make sure the connection has enough upload capacity

YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Count the primary and backup stream bitrates together if you send both. If the connection cannot sustain the selected resolution and bitrate, lower the bitrate or resolution, then test again.

If FFmpeg exits, separate restarting from recovery

A process supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. That may help keep a service running on a VPS or another always-on machine, but it is process management—not a remedy for a bad command, missing source, invalid key, incompatible settings, or unavailable YouTube ingest. Confirm the underlying cause first, and verify restart behavior in your own environment.

Retest and capture useful diagnostics

  1. Test before the planned broadcast, as YouTube recommends, and watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room.
  2. Record the FFmpeg version/build, timestamp, whether the input or output failed, and the first meaningful error lines.
  3. Share the command only after removing the stream key and any other credentials. Keep enough context to show which URL is the input and which is the output.
  4. Change one relevant setting at a time. For an HTTP source, test its HTTP retry behavior; for an RTMP output, test the FIFO recovery configuration; for a process exit, inspect why it terminated before relying on restarts.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring stream health while live.

Common errors and what to try

Symptom Likely layer Next check
HTTP source disconnects before EOF HTTP input Apply and verify the HTTP reconnect options for that input; confirm the source URL remains available.
HTTP source reaches EOF and stops HTTP input If it is intended to be live or endless, test -reconnect_at_eof 1 and confirm the source actually returns data after reconnecting.
FFmpeg reports a write failure to the YouTube destination RTMP/RTMPS output Check the current ingest URL and key, then test the FIFO muxer recovery pattern. HTTP reconnect flags are for HTTP input behavior.
YouTube rejects the feed or reports stream errors Ingest configuration or media Verify the key and URL, supported codecs, CBR, keyframe interval, and resolution-appropriate bitrate.
Stream drops under load or network changes Upload connection Measure available upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce bitrate or resolution if needed.
FFmpeg process disappears Process management or underlying failure Inspect the exit and error logs; use a supervisor only after addressing the cause.

Or let it run in the cloud
