For a local concat list, check the script’s first line, file paths and permissions, stream compatibility, and duration-derived timestamps. If you are sending HLS to YouTube, check that you are sending a Media Playlist and using unique segment names across restarts. Looping or real-time pacing options do not fix a malformed or unreadable entry.
First identify which playlist FFmpeg is using
A local concat script is a text file of file directives that FFmpeg reads as a virtual sequence of media files. An HLS playlist is an .m3u8 manifest with media segments. The output destination being YouTube Live does not make a local concat script an HLS playlist.
- Local concat script to RTMP: inspect the script, paths, input compatibility, durations, and FFmpeg log.
- HLS sent to YouTube: inspect playlist type and segment naming, as described in the HLS section below.
Use the branch that matches the input FFmpeg actually reads. The two formats are not interchangeable fixes. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Fix a local concat script
1. Check the script header and entry order
A basic native concat script looks like this, with the format marker on the very first line:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/one.mp4'
file '/media/two.mp4'For automatic recognition, the header must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading whitespace or byte-order mark. Check that every intended entry is present, spelled correctly, and in the desired order. The script should not have an unexpected blank line or other text before the header.
2. Check paths, escaping, and read access
Confirm each path is valid from the machine and working environment where FFmpeg runs, and that the account running it can read the file. Spaces and special characters must follow concat-script quoting and escaping rules; do not assume ordinary shell quoting rules automatically apply inside the script.
If a local path is rejected by the concat demuxer’s default safety policy, -safe 0 can relax that restriction. It will not fix a typo, missing file, bad escaping, or inadequate permissions. Use it only when needed and only with a playlist you trust.

3. Compare the media streams
The concat demuxer expects the files to have compatible stream layouts, including the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Inspect each entry with ffprobe and compare the details relevant to your files: stream count, video codec and dimensions, audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and time base.

A mismatch can produce errors or prevent seamless packet concatenation. Stream-copying a playlist does not make arbitrary formats compatible. If the entries differ, normalize or transcode them to compatible streams before concatenating, or use an encoding workflow suited to the differences. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for its compatibility requirements.
4. Check durations and timestamps
With concat, FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts where the previous one is considered to end. A file’s duration may be inferred inaccurately, and streams in one file may not end at exactly the same time. The result can look like a skipped entry when it is actually a timestamp gap, black video, silence, or a segment that the output path rejects.

Compare FFmpeg’s probed duration with the actual playable duration, especially for the file just before the apparent skip. If the inferred duration is wrong and you know a reliable duration, an explicit duration directive in the concat script can override it. Do not guess: an incorrect override can move subsequent timestamps just as surely as an incorrect probe can.
5. Keep looping and pacing in their proper roles
-stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely; -re reads file input at approximately real-time speed. These are separate concerns from whether FFmpeg can discover and decode every playlist entry. Neither option repairs a malformed script, inaccessible path, incompatible stream, or incorrect duration. FFmpeg documents these command-line options in its documentation.

For a concat input, place the relevant input options before that input’s -i. Test locally and inspect the log before reconnecting the live output.

Illustrative RTMP command for a concat input
This is a command shape, not a universal recipe. Replace the playlist path and ingest URL with your own. Confirm your YouTube ingest method and output requirements; stream copy may not work for mismatched inputs or the chosen output, in which case re-encoding may be necessary.

This branch applies when FFmpeg sends HLS to YouTube as its ingest format—not when FFmpeg reads a local concat script and pushes RTMP. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says it supports Media Playlists and ignores Master Playlists. Submit the media playlist for the stream rather than a master playlist that points to variants.

YouTube also says media-segment filenames should remain unique across encoder reboots and stream restarts. Reusing segment names can interfere with how restarted HLS input is handled. Review the playlist type and naming behavior in the encoder’s HLS output configuration.
Tell a genuinely skipped file from a playback symptom
A file may be present in the sequence but appear absent because it produces silence, black frames, delayed timestamps, decode or muxer errors, or a gap. The playlist alone cannot establish which happened. To isolate the first apparent omission, compare the FFmpeg log and media metadata for the entry immediately before and after it.
Collect enough evidence to diagnose the exact entry
- The complete command, with the stream key and any private paths redacted.
- The playlist text, preserving entry order and relevant directives.
- The output of
ffmpeg -version, so advice can be matched to your installed release. - Log lines around the point where the entry should begin, including warnings and errors.
ffprobeoutput for the entry before the apparent skip and the one after it.
FFmpeg’s current documentation may differ from the version installed on your system. Without those details, the checks above are diagnostic branches, not proof of a particular cause.
