Start with the exact error and timestamp in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with your encoder logs, local output, CPU load, and outbound network measurements. “Dropped frames” can mean an encoder is dropping or duplicating frames to meet its timing mode, the server cannot encode quickly enough, or the stream is not reaching YouTube steadily. Hetzner hosting alone does not identify which part is at fault.

1. Capture the evidence before changing anything

For a stream that runs around the clock, collect evidence while it is operating normally and during a period when the drops occur. Record the timestamp for every symptom so you can line up YouTube’s status with local logs and server metrics.

  • The exact YouTube Live Control Room health message, when it appeared, and whether it remains active.
  • The complete encoder configuration or FFmpeg command, the encoder version, and logs covering the same period.
  • Stream resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval.
  • CPU utilization and load, plus any available encoder performance or output-timing data.
  • Whether the source, preview, or local archive stutters, freezes, or has gaps.
  • Outbound throughput over time and any network errors or interruptions—not just a single peak speed-test result.
  • The Hetzner product family, location, public network setup, and current traffic usage.

YouTube’s “Live streaming error messages” documentation says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent to YouTube, and errors carry timestamps. Avoid changing several settings at once: doing so makes it harder to tell which change helped or caused a new problem.

2. Find where the frames are being lost

Follow the stream from source to YouTube: source or input feed → encoder → server’s outbound connection → YouTube ingest. Check the earliest point at which the output becomes unhealthy.

If the local output is already bad

Inspect the source, capture or decoder chain, and encoder workload. Check whether a local preview or archive is choppy or incomplete, and whether the encoder can keep up with real-time processing. YouTube’s “Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream” guidance specifically recommends checking preview quality, encoder CPU load, and local archive problems.

If the local output is clean but YouTube reports a problem

Investigate the outbound connection and the YouTube ingest path. Measure sustained throughput and variability from the server, and check for network errors or interruptions. A healthy preview or archive combined with an unhealthy YouTube status points later in the chain, but does not by itself prove whether the server’s route, available capacity, or YouTube ingest is responsible.

Read the message, not just the health color

YouTube’s documented live-stream error categories include codec and format, bitrate, video settings, and keyframe frequency. Its health documentation also describes the message “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” Treat the specific Live Control Room message as the starting point; it is more useful than treating every health warning as a generic network failure.

3. Match the stream to YouTube’s current settings

Compare the encoder output with the stream configuration shown in Live Control Room, including the resolution and frame rate selected for the event. YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video for the listed configuration, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. The exact recommended bitrate depends on those settings; do not copy a number from a different resolution or frame rate. The live error guidance says a non-variable-resolution stream must use the bitrate for the selected resolution shown in Ingestion Settings, and suggests lowering resolution when the available bandwidth is insufficient. If the dashboard reports a mismatch, correct the named setting and check whether that same error clears.

YouTube documentation can describe multiple codecs or ingest paths for different configurations. Do not assume that every listed codec applies to every stream mode; follow the profile and error shown for your actual stream.

4. Check FFmpeg timing and real-time performance

Keep the full FFmpeg command, version, and logs together. Inspect the input timestamps, whether the input is a file or a live feed, the output frame-rate mode, any filters, and signs that the process is falling behind. A stream can have timing problems even when average CPU use looks acceptable, so compare log events with the timestamps of the YouTube warnings.

FFmpeg’s documentation explains that -fps_mode cfr duplicates or drops frames to achieve the requested constant frame rate. With -fps_mode vfr, timestamps are passed through while frames may be dropped to avoid duplicate timestamps. These modes change output timing behavior; neither is a universal fix. Choose based on the input and intended output timing, and verify the resulting output rather than copying a flag from another setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also determine whether the input is a file being replayed, a live capture or network input, or a feed that is already paced in real time. FFmpeg’s -re or -readrate controls input reading, but its documentation cautions against using a low read rate with an actual capture device or live input because packet loss can result. Do not add -re, change sync modes, or raise a frame-drop threshold without first establishing how the input is paced.

5. Check what your Hetzner server and plan actually provide

First establish whether the machine is a Hetzner Cloud server or a dedicated server, and note its product family, location, public network setup, and traffic counter. Hetzner’s published traffic allowances vary by product and region. Its traffic documentation lists 20 TB of included traffic for the EU Cloud entries shown for CX, CPX, and CAX; that figure is specific to those entries and is not a universal allowance, guaranteed per-instance bitrate, or proof that traffic policy caused a frame drop. The traffic page was last changed on 2024-05-21, so verify the current terms for your actual plan.

Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines hosted on physical servers, with shared-resource and dedicated-resource classes. If drops coincide with CPU saturation or inconsistent processing, compare measured performance with the resources of the instance you actually have; a product name alone cannot establish that it has enough capacity for your encoding workload. Hetzner’s Cloud overview also says public internet connectivity requires a Primary IP.

Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement describes a commercially reasonable effort toward 99.9% monthly Cloud Server availability, subject to its definition and exclusions. That availability statement concerns server operation or activity; it is not a guarantee of continuous YouTube ingest, encoder performance, or frame-perfect media delivery.

6. Apply a fix that matches the evidence

Evidence Next action How to verify
YouTube identifies an incorrect bitrate, codec, frame rate, or keyframe interval. Correct the setting named in Live Control Room to match the active ingest profile and YouTube’s applicable encoder guidance. Watch for the same error at the next comparable operating period and confirm the configured output still matches the intended resolution and frame rate.
The preview or local archive is choppy, and CPU is saturated. Reduce encoding complexity, resolution, or frame rate as appropriate, or test server resources better suited to the measured workload. The right preset or server size depends on the actual command, codec, and hardware. Compare local output and CPU behavior before and after the single change, then check YouTube health.
Local output is clean, but outbound measurements or YouTube health show trouble. Investigate sustained egress, network errors, connectivity, and the configured YouTube ingest endpoint. If available capacity is inadequate, test a lower bitrate or resolution. Compare throughput over the same kind of operating window and confirm whether the YouTube warning and viewer-side issue persist.
Drops coincide with traffic usage or a suspected product constraint. Confirm the actual Hetzner plan, location, current allowance, and usage. Contact Hetzner support or evaluate another suitable plan only after matching the suspected constraint to observed evidence. Check whether the issue follows the measured constraint; the published traffic allowance alone does not establish cause.
No source, encoding, or outbound fault is visible. Update the encoder and, as YouTube suggests, test a different encoder while keeping the source and stream settings as consistent as possible. Compare logs and health messages across the tests to isolate software-specific behavior.

For a 24/7 production stream, preserve a fallback or restart plan before changing the only live encoder. When comparing remedies, weigh the measured cause addressed, sustained capacity rather than peak speed, any reduction in resolution or frame rate, reversibility, and recurring cost or operational effort. Those are practical decision criteria, not thresholds prescribed by YouTube or Hetzner.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 YouTube channel plays uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating and troubleshooting your own Hetzner encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • One flat price per slot covers the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
