How to Fix Disney Plus Not Working on Chromecast

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fix Disney Plus not working on Chromecast, confirm the Chromecast model, put the phone or computer and Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network, update and restart Disney+, reboot the Chromecast from its power source, and test another Cast-enabled app. Then check power, HDMI, cache, network stability, and Disney+ availability before resetting the device.

The steps below separate casting problems from Disney+ playback, television-input, power, and account problems, so you can test the likely cause without prematurely erasing the Chromecast.

Key takeaways

  • Disney+ supports Chromecast Gen 2 or newer, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV, and Android TV devices with built-in Chromecast.
  • The casting device and Chromecast must use the same Wi-Fi network; cellular-only connections, guest networks, VPNs, and isolated router networks can prevent discovery.
  • Reboot the Chromecast from its power source for about one minute, then restart the modem, router, and Chromecast in that order if the problem continues.
  • A low-power warning usually means the Chromecast needs its supplied power adapter and cable rather than a TV USB port or incompatible adapter.
  • Factory-resetting the Chromecast should be a last resort, after checking power, HDMI, Wi-Fi, software, other Cast-enabled apps, and Disney+ on another device.

How to fix Disney Plus not working on Chromecast

To fix Disney Plus not working on Chromecast, confirm the Chromecast model, put the phone or computer and Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network, update and restart Disney+, reboot the Chromecast from its power source, and test another Cast-enabled app. Then check power, HDMI, cache, network stability, and Disney+ availability before resetting the device.

Start by identifying the symptom. Disney+ opening normally on a phone does not prove that Chromecast discovery, the HDMI connection, or the Chromecast’s power supply is working. The correct fix depends on whether the Cast button is missing, the device is undiscoverable, playback stops, or the TV shows no usable picture.

Which Chromecast model do you have?

Disney+ currently lists Google Chromecast Gen 2 or newer, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV, and Android TV devices with built-in Chromecast among its supported TV-connected platforms. Disney+’s Chromecast support documentation says first-generation Chromecast devices may still work but no longer receive Disney+ app updates.

Device How Disney+ usually works Important limitation
Chromecast Gen 2 or newer Receives a cast command from a phone, tablet, or Chrome browser. First-generation Chromecast is not equivalent to current supported hardware because app updates may no longer arrive.
Chromecast Ultra Receives casts and supports compatible high-resolution playback. Google says Chromecast Ultra requires its included power supply rather than TV USB power.
Chromecast with Google TV Can run the Disney+ app directly and can also receive casts. Native-app menus and casting problems can have different causes.
TV with built-in Chromecast Uses the television’s Android TV or Google TV software as the Cast receiver. Settings such as cache controls vary by television manufacturer.

Chromecast with Google TV is not the same product as the newer Google TV Streamer (4K). Google describes the Google TV Streamer (4K) as the next-generation device with a faster processor and more memory than the previous Chromecast device. Replacement is sensible only after basic power, network, HDMI, and software causes have been excluded.

Is the phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi network?

The phone, tablet, or computer sending the cast command and the Chromecast must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. A cellular-only connection, guest network, separate mesh SSID, or router configuration that isolates clients can stop Disney+ from finding the Chromecast.

  1. Open Wi-Fi settings on the phone or tablet and compare the network name with the network used by Chromecast.
  2. Turn off cellular-only use and temporarily disable automatic switching if the device keeps moving between isolated SSIDs.
  3. On iOS 14 or later, open Settings, select Disney+, and enable Local Network. Google says Local Network access is required for discovery.
  4. On macOS 15 or later, check the computer’s Local Network permission if casting from a Mac.
  5. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy when casting from Chrome. Google says these networks can prevent a laptop from communicating with a streaming device.

Google’s Cast-enabled app troubleshooting also recommends using the latest version of the Cast-enabled app. Update Disney+, Google Home where relevant, and the operating system before diagnosing the Chromecast as defective.

What should you restart first?

Restart Disney+ and the Chromecast before changing advanced settings. Fully close Disney+ instead of merely returning to the home screen, reopen the app, and try casting again.

  1. Unplug the Chromecast from its power source for about one minute.
  2. Reconnect the Chromecast and wait until it finishes starting and shows its home screen.
  3. Open the updated Disney+ app and try the cast command again.
  4. If the fault remains, turn off the Chromecast or TV, modem, and router.
  5. Restart the modem first, the router second, and the Chromecast or TV last.

Removing a Chromecast from the TV’s HDMI socket does not reboot the device. Rebooting from the power source is the relevant step. Do not factory-reset the Chromecast at this stage because a reset erases its configuration and requires setup again. Google’s “No Cast destination found” guidance places rebooting, setup checks, and router checks before a factory reset.

Why does Chromecast show Low power or g.co/cast/power?

A “Low power” or “g.co/cast/power” screen means the Chromecast may not be receiving sufficient power. Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer should use the supplied power adapter and cable, connected to a reliable wall outlet rather than a TV USB port or incompatible adapter.

Fully seat the cable at both ends, remove USB-C hubs or switches, wait five seconds, and reconnect it. Repeated restarts, crashes during playback, disappearance from the network, and an explicit low-power message all make the power supply a stronger suspect. Google lists 5V/1.5A as the recommended replacement-adapter specification; model compatibility still matters, so do not treat every generic USB accessory as suitable. See Google’s low-power troubleshooting instructions before buying a replacement.

If the existing adapter or cable is damaged or missing, a compatible Chromecast replacement power adapter and cable is a conditional replacement, not a universal Disney+ fix. A known-good, correctly specified accessory should be tested against the device’s model requirements.

Could the HDMI input or TV equipment be causing the failure?

A wrong HDMI input, loose connection, incompatible cable, receiver, soundbar, or display can make Disney+ appear broken even when the Chromecast is working.

  1. Set the TV to the HDMI input where the Chromecast is connected.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI connection at both ends.
  3. Try another HDMI input on the TV.
  4. Bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or adapter temporarily if the setup allows.
  5. Test a known-good HDMI cable or another TV.

Disney says high-bandwidth digital content requires compatible components and that external displays must support HDCP 2.2 for 4K Ultra HD and HDR content. If ordinary titles play but 4K or HDR titles produce a black screen, no signal, or an HDCP-related failure, inspect the entire display chain. A high-speed HDMI cable for Chromecast can be a reasonable conditional replacement after testing the input and existing cable, but buying a cable will not fix a Wi-Fi, account, or Disney+ service problem. Google also documents the correct power and HDMI connection process in its Chromecast setup and power guidance.

What should you do when the Cast button is missing?

A missing Cast button usually points to the Disney+ app, permissions, or network discovery rather than Disney+ playback on the TV. Update Disney+, confirm the phone or computer is on the same Wi-Fi network, and check Local Network permission on iOS or macOS.

  • Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming

Next, open YouTube or another Cast-enabled app. If another app also cannot see the Chromecast, focus on discovery rather than Disney+ account settings:

  • Confirm that the Chromecast is powered and showing its home screen.
  • Confirm that the Chromecast appears in Google Home.
  • Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily.
  • Check for guest-network or access-point client isolation on the router.
  • Reboot the Chromecast and router.
  • Update the Cast-enabled app and Google Home.

If other apps can cast but Disney+ cannot, force-close and update Disney+, then clear its cache or reinstall it. Google recommends testing another Cast-enabled app to distinguish a Disney+ problem from a general casting problem.

How do you fix buffering, freezing, or connection errors?

Buffering or freezing during Disney+ casting is most often associated with an unstable or congested network, outdated software, router or modem trouble, distance from the router, an ISP issue, device incompatibility, or unusually high simultaneous viewing.

  1. Play another streaming app on the Chromecast.
  2. Play Disney+ directly on the phone or tablet without casting.
  3. Move the Chromecast, router, and casting device closer together where practical.
  4. Restart the modem, router, and Chromecast in that order.
  5. Install available Disney+, Google Home, operating-system, and Chromecast or Google TV updates.

If every streaming app buffers, investigate the home network or ISP first. If other apps work and Disney+ fails on several devices, investigate Disney+, the account, or service availability instead.

For persistent Wi-Fi instability, a compatible Chromecast Ethernet Adapter can provide a wired connection for Chromecast Ultra or Chromecast with Google TV. Google says the adapter supplies both power and internet connectivity, but compatibility depends on the Chromecast model and the adapter must connect to a functioning router and AC power. Check Google’s Ethernet Adapter quick-start guide before treating wired networking as an option.

Should you clear Disney+ cache or reinstall the app?

Clearing Disney+ cache and data or reinstalling Disney+ is appropriate when the app remains stuck, crashes, or fails after an update, but the exact menu depends on whether Disney+ is running on a phone, a Chromecast with Google TV, or a TV with built-in Chromecast.

For an Android phone or tablet, Disney’s example path is Settings > Apps > Disney+ > Storage, followed by Clear Cache and, where available, Clear Data. Clearing data can sign the user out and remove local app information.

For Chromecast built-in or Android TV, Disney gives an example path through Settings > Apps > Chromecast built-in, then Clear data and Clear cache, followed by restarting the TV. Television manufacturers change menu names and locations, so that path is not universal. Use Disney+’s cache and data instructions for the relevant device type.

If clearing data does not help, uninstall and reinstall Disney+ so the latest available app version is installed. Restart the relevant connections and test another title afterward.

Is Disney+ down, or is the problem limited to Chromecast?

Test Disney+ on the phone, computer, and another supported TV device. If Disney+ fails everywhere, the issue is less likely to be Chromecast-specific; check the official Disney+ Help Center, verify that the subscription is active, and try another title.

Supported-device availability can vary by location, so a device listed in general support information may not have identical availability in every territory. If only one movie or episode fails, test another on-demand title before resetting hardware. Disney also distinguishes its Streams feature from ordinary on-demand playback; Streams require a subscription, high-speed internet, and a supported device. Consult Disney’s supported-device information and Streams requirements when the failure affects a particular feature or territory.

When should you factory-reset or replace Chromecast?

Factory-reset the Chromecast only after confirming adequate power, the correct HDMI input, a working network, current software, successful tests with other Cast-enabled apps, and unsuccessful normal setup or Google Home recovery.

A reset is reasonable for persistent setup corruption, an incorrect Wi-Fi configuration that cannot be changed normally, or a device that repeatedly fails after power and software troubleshooting. Follow the reset and setup instructions for the exact model because the process erases configuration and requires the Chromecast to be set up again.

Replacement becomes reasonable when the device is a first-generation Chromecast that no longer receives Disney+ app updates, repeatedly reboots with known-good power, fails across multiple networks and apps, or cannot complete setup after a reset. A Chromecast with Google TV is a conditional replacement for an obsolete or repeatedly failing Chromecast, while the Google TV Streamer (4K) is Google’s newer streaming-device generation. Neither replacement is a guaranteed cure for a Disney+ outage, an isolated Wi-Fi network, inadequate power, or a defective TV input.

When should you contact Disney or Google support?

Contact Disney+ support when Disney+ fails across several supported devices, only a specific account or title is affected, or the subscription and regional availability need checking. Contact Google or the device manufacturer when the Chromecast cannot power on, remains undiscoverable in every Cast-enabled app, fails across known-good networks, or cannot complete setup after a reset.

Before contacting support, record the Chromecast model, TV model, affected title, whether other apps cast successfully, whether Disney+ works on the phone, the exact on-screen message, and which power and network tests were completed. Do not rely on a generic error-code interpretation unless Disney’s official support documentation maps that code to a specific cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Disney+ work with every Chromecast?

Disney+ supports Chromecast Gen 2 or newer, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV, and Android TV devices with built-in Chromecast. First-generation Chromecast devices may still work, but Disney says they no longer receive Disney+ app updates, so compatibility is not equivalent to current support.

Why is my Chromecast not showing up in Disney+?

The phone or computer and Chromecast must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and iOS or macOS may require Disney+ or the casting app to have Local Network permission. Disable cellular-only connections, guest-network isolation, VPNs, and proxies temporarily, then reboot the router and Chromecast.

How do I fix Chromecast Low power when Disney+ is not working?

Use the supplied Chromecast power adapter and cable from a wall outlet, fully reconnect the cable, and avoid TV USB ports, hubs, or incompatible adapters. Google lists 5V/1.5A as the recommended replacement-adapter specification, but the correct accessory depends on the Chromecast model.

Should I factory-reset Chromecast if Disney+ will not cast?

No. Factory-resetting Chromecast erases its configuration and requires setup again. Reset only after checking same-network discovery, app updates, power, HDMI, other Cast-enabled apps, and Disney+ on another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The quickest reliable sequence is: same Wi-Fi network, current Disney+ app, force-close and reopen Disney+, power-cycle the Chromecast, restart the network, then check power and HDMI. Use another Cast-enabled app and another Disney+ device to isolate the fault. Factory-reset or replace the Chromecast only after those tests point to persistent device or compatibility failure.
