Start with the error and timestamp in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then isolate the fault: stream key, encoder settings or performance, internet connection, or a YouTube account or copyright restriction. Fix the specific reported issue before changing unrelated settings; the right remedy depends on where the stream first looks or sounds wrong.
1. Read YouTube’s stream-health message first
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator and its error details. YouTube identifies errors and timestamps them. Red errors are critical and may stop an event or affect viewers; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Use the message and timestamp to locate the problem, and address that issue before changing other settings. YouTube Help: live stream errors.
Note when the error began and whether it coincides with a change to the encoder, connection, camera, microphone, or program content. If viewers report a problem, ask whether it affects one viewer, viewers on the same connection, or people on different connections. Those clues help distinguish a local playback issue from a problem affecting the outgoing stream.
2. Fix a stream that will not start
“Error starting your encoder”
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select Stream.
- Copy the current stream key.
- In your third-party encoder, replace the saved key with the current one, then try starting the stream again.
A stale or incorrectly entered key can prevent the encoder from connecting. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. If your encoder signs in to YouTube directly and does not use a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team. See YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Correct format, video, audio, and keyframe settings
If Live Control Room reports a codec, container, bitrate, audio, video, frame-rate, or keyframe error, follow the exact message. Requirements may differ by ingest mode and configuration, so a setting that works in one setup is not a universal fix.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s error guide says not to exceed four seconds. Check that your encoder’s selected codec, container, audio format, frame rate, and keyframe interval match the relevant guidance and the error shown. 4. Match bitrate and resolution to your codec and upload capacity
Test your upload speed and choose a setting your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these examples:
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s configuration guidance, not a guarantee that a given connection will be stable. They apply to H.264; YouTube’s table gives different ranges for AV1 and H.265. Do not transfer an H.264 figure to another codec. If your measured upload capacity cannot reliably support the chosen setting, lower the resolution or otherwise select a supported bitrate that fits the connection. Consult YouTube Help’s encoder settings for the codec-specific table and the error guide for the message you see.

5. Find out whether the encoder, source, or connection is at fault
The encoder preview already looks or sounds bad
The problem is likely upstream of YouTube playback: the encoder, its performance, or an input routed into it. Check the encoder’s own warnings and CPU load; confirm the local recording, camera feed, microphone, and audio routing are healthy; and update the encoder if appropriate. A brief test with another encoder can help establish whether the issue is specific to the software or setup. Avoid changing YouTube bitrate settings to solve a defect that is already visible in the encoder preview.
The preview is healthy, but viewers have trouble
Investigate the outgoing connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test upload capacity and stability from the streaming location. If the test indicates a connection fault, contact your internet service provider. Viewer reports also help narrow the scope: trouble limited to one viewer or one shared network may be local to playback or that connection, while reports from viewers on different connections warrant checking the outgoing stream closely. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these distinctions at YouTube Help.

6. Check copyright and channel restrictions
A stream can be interrupted even when the encoder and internet connection appear healthy. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may produce a warning or placeholder, interrupt or terminate the stream; channel strikes can also lead to termination.
- Check YouTube Studio for copyright notices and channel strikes.
- If you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist.
- Do not assume that a technical-looking interruption is an encoder fault until you have checked for account and content restrictions.
See YouTube Help on live-stream copyright for details.

7. Use live and post-stream data at the right time
During the broadcast, use Live Control Room’s stream health and real-time analytics to watch for changing conditions. After the stream ends, video-level metrics appear in Analytics within minutes, according to YouTube. The live dashboard helps diagnose an active event; post-stream analytics help review its performance afterward. YouTube Help: live stream metrics.
8. Prevent avoidable problems before the next broadcast
- Test with audio and movement similar to the planned event, rather than checking a silent or static picture only.
- Review the Live Control Room preview before the event and confirm that the event page is accessible.
- Start the encoder and prepare its stream well before the scheduled start time.
- Monitor audio and video quality continuously while live, and respond to specific health messages as they appear.
- Choose a latency setting that suits the event. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, so immediate interaction and playback stability may involve a trade-off. See YouTube Help on stream settings.
9. Common symptoms and the first useful check
| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| Encoder will not start | Refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and replace the key in the encoder; if it signs in directly, contact the software vendor. |
| “Incorrect bitrates,” video, audio, or keyframe message | Match the reported setting to YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec and ingest configuration. |
| Picture or sound is already poor in the encoder preview | Check encoder errors and load, then inspect the source recording, camera, microphone, and routing. |
| Encoder preview is fine, but viewers report buffering or dropouts | Check Live Control Room health and test outbound upload capacity; contact the ISP if the connection test points to a fault. |
| Stream is interrupted despite apparently healthy technical signals | Check Studio for copyright matches, notices, or channel strikes. |
