Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo fix buzzing in a live stream, first identify whether it is steady electrical hum, crackling, feedback, distortion, or a digital glitch. Then isolate the sound source one connection at a time—microphone or instrument, cable, interface, computer, and streaming software—before buying equipment. A cable or ground issue needs a different fix from a misrouted OBS input or an overloaded audio buffer.
Identify the sound before changing anything
“Buzz” can describe several different problems. The sound and when it occurs help narrow down where to look.
- Low, steady hum or buzz: Often points to an electrical issue, a ground path, or interference picked up by an unbalanced cable. Shure notes that a loose ground near a connector is one possible cause. Shure’s audio systems guide also describes how unbalanced cables can pick up interference near lights, dimmers, power cables, and loudspeaker cables.
- Intermittent crackle: Check for loose or damaged connectors and cables first. A connection that crackles when touched or moved is a useful clue.
- Sustained ringing or squeal: This is more likely feedback than ground hum. Feedback occurs when sound from a loudspeaker re-enters a microphone and is amplified again; turning down or repositioning the loudspeaker or microphone is more relevant than changing a USB buffer. See Shure’s explanation of common audio noise.
- Harsh breakup on loud words or notes: Suspect clipping or distortion. Check whether the input level is too high at the microphone, interface, or software stage.
- Clicks, stutters, or dropouts: These can indicate a digital performance or connection problem rather than a continuous electrical hum. Focusrite notes that some glitches can coincide with mouse movement or hard-disk activity, and recommends separate Windows troubleshooting for glitchy audio.
Shure’s Noise Identifier includes a 60-cycle hum example associated with AC interference. Use it as a sound-recognition aid, not proof of the cause: mains frequency and electrical conditions vary by location, and similar-sounding noise can have different sources.
Trace where the buzz enters the stream
Compare the sound at three points: direct headphone monitoring, a local recording, and the live stream. This is a practical diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee: monitoring paths differ between setups. If the local recording is clean but the stream is noisy, check routing and software sources before replacing a microphone or cable.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Make a short test recording. Use the same microphone, interface, and computer settings you use for streaming. Note whether the buzz is continuous, changes when a cable moves, or appears only during louder passages.
- Listen to direct monitoring, if available. If the interface’s direct monitor is already noisy, concentrate on the source, cable, interface, and nearby electrical equipment. If direct monitoring is clean but the local recording is noisy, check the computer connection and recording or streaming software path.
- Compare the local recording with the stream. If the local file is clean but the stream has the problem, inspect the selected software input and any duplicate or unintended audio sources.
- Change one thing at a time. Mute or disconnect nonessential devices and sources one by one, then repeat the same test. Record what changed so that you do not mistake a coincidence for a fix.
- Test another computer or location when possible. Focusrite recommends this comparison to help distinguish a computer-related issue from the building’s electrical environment.
Fix cable, connector, and electrical interference problems
Reseat and inspect connectors
With audio playback stopped, reseat the connections at the microphone or instrument, interface, and computer. Inspect the cable for visible damage and listen for crackling when it is gently moved. Try a known-good replacement cable only when its connectors and signal type match the equipment; replacing a cable at random makes the diagnosis less clear.
Separate unbalanced audio cables from electrical sources
Move unbalanced audio cables away from lighting fixtures, dimmers, mains power cables, and loudspeaker cables. When the connected equipment supports a balanced microphone path, try a known-good balanced XLR cable. Shure describes balanced cables as the durable solution specifically for hum picked up by unbalanced cables near those electrical sources—not as a cure for every kind of noise.

Check for a ground loop without defeating safety grounding
A ground loop can occur when connected devices have multiple paths to ground and may produce a persistent low-frequency buzz or hum. Disconnect nonessential connections one at a time to see whether the noise follows a device or connection; compare another computer or location if practical. Never remove or defeat a mains safety earth. If the noise tracks a particular signal path, choose any isolator only after confirming that its connectors and signal type match that path.
Match the remedy to the source and connection
| Option | Most relevant when | Compatibility and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced XLR microphone cable | Hum appears on an unbalanced cable run near lights, dimmers, power, or loudspeaker cables. | Use only with equipment that supports a balanced microphone path; it targets cable pickup, not every hum or glitch. |
| DI box with ground lift | An unbalanced instrument or other suitable source is feeding an interface and the hum appears to follow that connection. | Match the DI box to the source and interface path. Try its ground-lift switch only as appropriate to that signal path; it is not a universal filter. |
| Ground-loop isolator | The noise appears tied to a compatible connection between devices with multiple ground paths. | Connector and signal compatibility matter. It may help on the path that is causing the loop, but is not a general-purpose cure. |
| Specification-compatible USB cable | An interface connection is unstable, or the problem changes when the interface or USB cable is moved or replaced. | Use a cable that meets the interface and computer specifications. A USB cable will not repair hum induced into an analog audio cable. |
These are conditional troubleshooting options, not a ranking based on comparative testing. Focusrite discusses DI boxes with ground lift and ground-loop isolators for appropriate signal paths in its guide to unwanted hum or noise in monitors.

Check interface power, drivers, and Windows audio performance
If the sound is more like glitching or dropouts than a steady hum, investigate the computer-to-interface connection and software performance.
- USB power and cable: Check the computer’s power supply and try the supplied or otherwise specification-compatible USB cable. Focusrite notes that bus-powered interfaces may be more susceptible to noise and suggests a mains-powered USB hub as a troubleshooting option if computer bus power appears implicated. Neither change is guaranteed to solve the problem.
- Compatibility and drivers: Confirm that the interface supports your computer and operating system. Install or reinstall current interface software and drivers when connection or performance issues point to the interface. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model; menu names and driver steps differ across interfaces.
- Windows buffer size: For glitchy Windows audio, Focusrite suggests trying a buffer size of 1024 as part of its optimization guidance. A larger buffer can be relevant to glitches and dropouts; it is not a direct repair for a ground loop or cable interference. See Focusrite’s Windows audio troubleshooting guidance.
Verify the input selected in OBS
A clean microphone can still sound wrong on stream if OBS captures the wrong input or captures the same signal through more than one source. Focusrite’s guide is written for its interfaces, but the routing check is useful wherever OBS is capturing an interface input.

- In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source to the scene.
- Open that source’s properties and choose the intended microphone or interface input. Do not assume the default device is the one you use for monitoring.
- For a single microphone connected to a mono input, configure the source as mono when appropriate. Focusrite explains this in its OBS interface setup guide.
- Check the OBS mixer while speaking. Make sure the intended source responds and that an unintended duplicate source is not also capturing the microphone.
- Record a short local test in OBS and listen back before going live. If it is clean locally but not in the stream, recheck the stream scene and its active audio sources.
Common buzzing and audio problems: causes and fixes
- The buzz changes when you move a cable: Reseat the connector and test a known-good cable with matching connectors. Keep unbalanced audio runs away from electrical sources.
- The hum starts when another device is connected: Disconnect nonessential connections one at a time to identify the path. If multiple ground paths are implicated, consider only an isolator that matches the signal connection; do not remove mains earth.
- The instrument hums but a microphone does not: Check whether the instrument’s output and interface connection are unbalanced. A compatible DI box with ground lift is a targeted option for that kind of source path, not a general fix.
- The interface is noisy or unstable over USB: Check interface compatibility, the USB cable, and computer power. If bus power appears to be involved, a suitable mains-powered hub is one troubleshooting option.
- Audio clicks or drops out when the computer is busy: Treat it as a performance or driver problem rather than assuming a ground loop. Check current interface drivers and the manufacturer’s operating-system guidance; for Windows glitches, Focusrite suggests trying a 1024 buffer.
- Only the live stream is noisy: Confirm the OBS Audio Input Capture device and remove unintended duplicate capture sources. Compare a local OBS recording with the stream to narrow down where the issue appears.
- A loud ring continues through the microphone: Reduce the sound reaching the microphone from speakers, or reposition the microphone and speakers. This is feedback, not the same fault as a low electrical hum.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your documentary channel needs to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo handles the continuous stream separately from your live microphone setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The audio troubleshooting above still applies to a microphone-based live setup; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not go live from a camera.
