How to Fix Black Screens Between Product Demo Videos in an OBS YouTube Live Stream

Check OBS Media Source end behavior, visibility, unloading, and transitions to find why a black screen appears between product demo clips.

When a product demo clip ends and OBS shows black before the next one, start with the clip’s Media Source settings and the scene contents—not YouTube stream settings. In particular, check whether Show nothing when playback ends is hiding the finished clip, whether the next source is visible, and whether Close file when inactive is causing a brief reload gap. Rehearse the actual clip sequence and transitions before going live.

Find where the black screen is coming from

During a controlled rehearsal, watch the OBS program output at the moment the gap occurs. If black is already visible there, investigate the media sources, visibility, scene order, and transitions. If OBS output looks correct but the YouTube playback is black, this source set does not establish a YouTube ingest or player-side cause; avoid changing unrelated OBS settings without evidence. OBS recommends testing scenes, settings, and stream smoothness before a first live stream. OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Check the clip and scene settings in order

  1. Inspect what happens when a clip ends. Open the Media Source properties and review Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this option as on by default on its Media Sources page dated 2022-01-11; when enabled, it hides the source after playback completes. If the scene has nothing visible underneath, that can leave an empty or black scene. Decide what should be on screen at the boundary: a holding image, the next clip, a presenter camera, or a deliberate transition. OBS Media Sources.
  2. Verify the next source is visible and layered correctly. In the Sources list, check the eye icon for the intended next clip or background. OBS explains that the eye icon controls visibility and source ordering affects what can cover another item. A visible source may still be obscured by an item above it, so confirm the actual output rather than relying on the list alone. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  3. Choose the right restart behavior. The Media Source option Restart playback when source becomes active restarts a file when the source is in the current scene and visible. It is documented as on by default on the Media Sources page. Leave it on if each scene entry should start the demo from the beginning; turn it off only if the clip should resume from its prior position. Confirm visibility and activation behavior in the scene sequence you actually use. OBS Media Sources.
  4. Test with file unloading disabled if a returning scene flashes black. Close file when inactive unloads media when its source is hidden or not on the current scene to free memory. OBS warns that a short period without video may occur while the file reloads when the scene returns. Compare a rehearsal with this option off against one with it on; use the setting that gives your clips reliable playback on your setup. OBS Media Sources.
  5. Check transitions at clip boundaries. OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions and supports Studio Mode, which lets you prepare a scene and transition it to the live scene. Choose a transition that fits the show and test its timing with the clips; an intentional fade or holding scene can separate demos cleanly, but it should not conceal a source that never starts. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  6. Avoid assuming an immediate hide/show toggle will always restart playback. A report filed July 29, 2024 describes a media source restart failure after rapid hide/show at the end of playback in OBS 30.2.0 on Windows 11; the reporter said waiting at least one second avoided that reproduction. This is a narrow, version-specific issue report, not a universal timing rule or confirmation about current OBS releases. If your automation toggles a source exactly at clip end, test a small delay as a diagnostic. OBS issue #11040.

Choose a playback setup that fits the show

Setup Best fit Verify Trade-off
Separate Media Sources, optionally in separate scenes Demos need distinct overlays, layouts, or operator-controlled transitions Restart on activation, show-nothing-at-end, close-file-when-inactive, and source visibility More control per clip, with more sources and scene setup
VLC Video playlist A straightforward ordered sequence of local clips Playlist order, loop and shuffle choices, visibility behavior, VLC installation, and matching architecture One centralized playlist, with less per-clip scene and layout control

OBS documents that VLC Video supports playlists and that VLC must be installed for the source to appear. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. Select the arrangement that suits the show, then test it with the actual media files and scene collection. OBS Media Sources.

Rehearse the complete sequence before YouTube Live

  • Run every demo in its intended order, including the final clip and any loop back to the start.
  • Watch OBS program output at each ending, scene change, and source reactivation. Confirm whether black appears in OBS itself or only in the YouTube playback.
  • Check the holding image, background, or next clip is visible when the previous Media Source hides.
  • Test the selected transition and any automated source toggles; do not treat the one-second delay in the OBS 30.2.0 report as a guaranteed fix.
  • Repeat the rehearsal after changing source settings or the playlist. OBS’s overview recommends testing scenes and stream behavior before going live. OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded demo videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating an OBS computer continuously. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed, and it does not diagnose an OBS scene configured for a one-time demo presentation.
