How to Add Stream Labels to a YouTube Livestream

Add on-screen text to a YouTube livestream using an encoder text source or overlay, and learn how it differs from metadata and product tags.

To put a name, topic, or social handle on the video image, add a text source or supported overlay in your streaming encoder, position it in the scene, then preview it before going live. YouTube video tags and Shopping product tags serve different purposes: neither creates on-screen text.

First, identify which kind of “label” you mean

  • On-screen text: Text rendered over the video, such as a channel name, programme title, or social handle. Add this in the encoder or an overlay tool.
  • Video tags: Descriptive keywords in the stream settings. They are metadata, not text in the picture. YouTube says tags generally play a minimal role in discovery, except for helping with common misspellings. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  • Shopping product tags: Product links viewers can shop during a live stream, subject to YouTube Shopping eligibility. They are not informational overlays. See YouTube’s live Shopping instructions.

Add an informational label in your encoder

For a static name, topic, or handle, use your encoder’s text source. For graphics or information that changes, use a supported overlay source or tool. Exact menus vary by encoder and version, so these general steps do not imply a universal click path.

  1. Open the scene you intend to broadcast.
  2. Add a text source or supported overlay source, then enter the label text or configure the overlay.
  3. Position and size it so it is readable at the stream’s intended resolution without obscuring important documentary footage, captions, or other essential content.
  4. Preview the scene and check that the label appears where expected and remains legible. Make any adjustments before starting the broadcast.

Keep the label concise and visually distinct from the footage. If you need text that updates automatically, confirm that your chosen overlay supports the specific dynamic information you want and works with your encoder.

Use YouTube’s browser-source instructions for its break overlay

YouTube’s official browser-source procedure applies to its Live Control Room “Take a Break” overlay, not to a general-purpose label generator. If that is the overlay you want, follow YouTube’s break-overlay instructions:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In Live Control Room, copy the overlay URL from the relevant settings.
  2. Add a browser source in your encoder and enter that URL.
  3. Set the browser source’s width and height to match your stream resolution.
  4. Enable “Shutdown source when not visible.”
  5. Test the overlay before going live.

Browser-source support and behavior can differ between encoders. If your encoder does not support the source as described, consult its current documentation rather than assuming the same steps or settings will work.

Choose between a built-in text source and an overlay tool

Approach Best suited to What to check
Text source in your existing encoder A straightforward label that you edit yourself, such as a channel name or programme topic. Where the source is added in a scene, how it can be positioned and styled, and whether it remains readable in the stream preview.
Packaged overlay or streaming tool A more customized or potentially dynamic scene element. Whether the feature is available in the current software and plan, what information it can update, and compatibility with your encoder. YouTube’s streaming-tools directory lists Streamlabs and describes scene labels and on-stream notification popups; check the tool’s current interface and feature availability before relying on it.

Check the result before broadcasting

  • Confirm that the intended scene is active and the label is visible in the encoder preview.
  • Check readability at the output size, not just while editing a large canvas.
  • Make sure the label does not cover key footage or other important on-screen information.
  • If the label comes from a browser source or external tool, verify that the source loads and displays correctly in your encoder.

Common problems and fixes

  • The label does not appear: Check that its source is enabled in the active scene and that an external or browser-based overlay has loaded. Preview it again before broadcasting.
  • The browser overlay is the wrong size: For YouTube’s break overlay, set the browser-source dimensions to match the stream resolution, as described in YouTube’s instructions.
  • The label is difficult to read or blocks the footage: Adjust its size and position in the scene, then review the preview at the intended output size.
  • A guide’s menu names do not match your encoder: Encoder interfaces and browser-source support vary. Use the current documentation for your specific encoder rather than applying another product’s steps literally.
  • You expected searchable metadata or a shop link: On-screen text, video tags, and Shopping product tags are separate features. Use the stream settings for metadata tags and YouTube’s Shopping workflow for eligible product tagging.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded programme that should keep looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, and it does not create or manage on-screen labels; add labels to the video or prepare them in your encoder before uploading.
