First, play the exact prerecorded file locally and check whether its sound and picture are already out of sync. If they are, fix or replace the file before changing your streaming setup. If the file plays correctly, test it through your actual OBS scene and inspect a recording or private YouTube broadcast. That comparison helps locate whether the mismatch is in the source, OBS output, or live delivery; there is no single setting that fixes every case.
Find where the sync problem begins
Check a clear cue—such as a mouth movement paired with speech or a visible impact with its sound—near both the start and end of the file. Note whether the sound is consistently early or late, or whether the difference grows over time. These observations help describe the fault, but neither pattern alone proves its cause.
- Out of sync in local playback: The source file itself needs attention. Correct or replace it before adjusting live controls.
- In sync locally, out of sync in an OBS recording: The problem appears somewhere in the OBS playback or output path. Test the actual scene and its selected sources.
- In sync in the recording, but apparently delayed or variable for viewers: Compare the output with YouTube playback and check the ingest mode. Delivery latency is not the same as audio and picture being misaligned within the program.
Check the prerecorded source and OBS playback
Confirm that OBS is playing the intended file and that its playback properties match the intended use. OBS Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Its controls include looping, restarting playback when active, hardware decoding, playback speed and end-of-playback behavior. VLC Video can play a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. OBS: Media Sources
If the source is already misaligned, do not assume that changing an OBS live audio control will repair it. First establish a corrected source file, then repeat the local check.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test the actual OBS output
- Open the OBS scene used for the continuous stream and verify that it contains the intended Media Source or VLC Video playlist.
- Record or run a private test using the same scene, source, audio track and playback settings planned for the stream.
- Review the resulting recording or output itself. Do not treat OBS audio monitoring alone as proof that the final program is synchronized. OBS recommends recording as usual and playing the recording back before publishing. OBS: Audio Mixer Guide
- Compare an early and a late sync cue. Use representative motion and audio, and monitor YouTube stream health during a YouTube test. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Change one relevant setting at a time and keep a known-good configuration. Repeat the same test after each change; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change affected the result.
Choose a correction for the path you identified
If the file itself is out of sync
Repair or replace the prerecorded source, then confirm that it plays correctly locally before returning it to OBS. The correct editing procedure depends on the file and the nature of the fault; the available guidance does not establish one universal repair tool or setting.

If a separate captured audio device is out of sync in OBS
Check that device’s source configuration. On Windows, OBS audio input and output capture sources include Use Device Timestamps, described as an attempt to prevent desynchronization. It applies to those captured devices; it is not a universal correction for audio already embedded in a prerecorded Media Source. OBS: Audio Capture Sources
If you are considering an audio sync offset
Do not assume Advanced Audio Properties’ Sync Offset will fix timing problems in audio embedded in a prerecorded Media Source. The official OBS guidance cited here does not establish that behavior. A 2021 OBS forum post describes one user whose offset did not affect an imported WAV Media Source, but that single report does not establish how every OBS version or configuration behaves. If only viewer delivery seems delayed
Check the stream output and ingest mode before treating latency as lip-sync. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. That is a difference in when viewers receive the stream, not evidence that HLS inherently misaligns sound and picture within the program. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream
Check YouTube encoder settings without mistaking them for a sync fix
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its audio guidance gives 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with recommended audio bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and a representative test before going live. These are ingest recommendations, not established remedies for a sync fault. Check YouTube Help for current requirements when configuring a stream. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies segment durations between one and four seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are HLS setup details, not evidence that switching protocols will correct a source-file timing problem. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Sound and picture are already misaligned in the local file | Play the exact file and compare clear cues near its beginning and end. | Correct or replace the source, then retest before streaming. |
| The file is fine locally, but an OBS recording is not | Confirm the selected media file, source playback properties, scene and audio track. | Test the actual scene and change one relevant control at a time. |
| A separate microphone or audio device is misaligned | Inspect that OBS capture source’s configuration; on Windows, check whether Use Device Timestamps is relevant. | Retest the recording. Do not apply this device option as a presumed fix for embedded file audio. |
| OBS monitoring sounds right, but the saved output does not | Listen to and inspect the recorded output itself. | Use the recording as the basis for diagnosis, not monitoring alone. |
| The program recording is synchronized, but YouTube playback arrives later | Compare the output with the live playback path and note whether HLS or RTMP is used. | Distinguish delivery latency from internal audio-video alignment; latency alone does not identify a sync fault. |
| A change appears to help, but the result is uncertain | Repeat the same test and compare early and late cues. | Keep a known-good configuration and change only one setting per test. |
Keep a useful record of each test
When a problem persists, note the source file, OBS version, operating system, audio track selection, ingest protocol, each setting changed, and whether the offset stayed constant or grew over time. The right corrective control depends on those setup details; exact menu labels and solutions cannot be guaranteed for every encoder, operating system, file or playlist arrangement.
