First find out where the loop is running: in YouTube in a browser, in a media player such as VLC, or in production software such as OBS. Then check whether the mismatch is limited to that app, present as soon as playback starts, or grows over time. Those clues help identify which part of the playback chain to investigate; there is no one Windows setting proven to fix every looped-stream sync problem.
Locate where the audio drift starts
“Looped YouTube stream” can describe different setups. You might be watching a YouTube video or livestream repeatedly in a browser, repeating a file in a media player, or using OBS to loop media as part of a stream. The right checks depend on which app actually controls playback and looping.
- Only the YouTube tab is affected: investigate browser playback first.
- It happens only when OBS or another loop application is running: inspect that application’s source and playback settings.
- Audio is wrong in unrelated apps too: check Windows’ selected output device and the physical audio connections.
- The mismatch is there from the start or becomes more noticeable over time: note which pattern you observe. This is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause.
Test the same content in another relevant app or browser, if available, and compare it with audio in an unrelated application. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a check made a difference.
If you are watching in a browser
Try the same YouTube stream in another browser. YouTube’s official green screen in video player guidance also suggests turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome and updating graphics drivers for a green player with sound. That guidance addresses a related playback symptom, not audio drifting during a loop, so treat these as reasonable checks rather than guaranteed sync fixes.

- Compare browsers: open the same content in a different browser and check whether the audio-video mismatch remains.
- Test hardware acceleration: in Chrome, open Settings and search for “hardware acceleration.” Turn the setting off, restart the browser if prompted, and test playback again. The exact setting label can vary by version.
- Check the graphics driver: if you update it, use the appropriate driver source for your PC or graphics hardware, then retest. Do not assume a driver update will fix sync drift simply because it is available.
If OBS is creating the loop
Check which OBS source plays the video and where looping is enabled. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes a Media Source loop control for local media files and playlist looping for VLC Video sources.
- Identify the source: in OBS, inspect the relevant scene and its Sources list. Determine whether the looping item is a Media Source, VLC Video, browser source, or another source type.
- Check its loop setting: open the source’s properties and verify the loop or playlist-loop option that applies to that source. OBS’s controls differ by source type; check its documentation rather than assuming one source’s setting applies to another.
- Prefer a media source for a local file: OBS recommends Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio files. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide notes that many browser sources can significantly affect system resources. This is a reason to check source choice and system load, not proof that browser sources caused your drift.
- If using VLC Video: VLC must be installed. OBS says the installed VLC architecture must match 64-bit OBS when applicable. If the source does not work, verify both the installation and architecture before investigating sync settings.
Check Windows sound output and connections
Confirm Windows is sending audio to the device you intend to use, then inspect the speaker or headphone connections. A changed output device or a loose connection can complicate diagnosis, particularly if audio problems extend beyond the YouTube tab or loop application. Microsoft lists these checks and its Get Help audio troubleshooter in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

If general Windows audio is behaving incorrectly, run the audio troubleshooter through Get Help and follow its findings. This is a general Windows diagnostic, not a specific test for YouTube loop drift.
If the loop is playing in VLC
VideoLAN’s VLC FAQ suggests trying another audio output plugin and checking audio desynchronization compensation if the input file is the source of the problem. First establish whether the sound leads the picture or lags behind it. Do not enter a fixed compensation value without measuring the direction and amount of the offset; the FAQ does not establish one value that fits every file or setup.

Why sync can change over time
Audio, system, and player clocks can differ, and their timing can drift. VideoLAN’s VLC 4.0 Clock Architecture documentation describes clock management for synchronization, including audio and video. That is a general explanation of how playback systems handle timing, not evidence that clock differences are the cause in a particular YouTube setup.
