How to Fix Audio Drifting Out of Sync in an Always-On YouTube Podcast Stream

When audio drifts during a long YouTube podcast stream, first find whether the gap is fixed or growing and where it enters the output. Then check OBS, sample rates, device clocks, and frame-loss indicators.

If your podcast stream starts in sync but the gap between speech and video grows over time, a fixed audio-delay setting is unlikely to solve it. First compare OBS’s actual output with YouTube playback, then check sample rates, device clocks, and OBS performance. If the gap stays the same throughout, measure and correct a fixed offset in the source path where it occurs.

Identify whether the problem is a fixed delay or progressive drift

These patterns point to different problems:

  • Fixed offset: audio is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount. This is a stable latency, so a measured sync offset in the relevant source path may help.
  • Progressive drift: audio and video begin close to sync, but the gap grows as the stream runs. This points toward timing or clock behavior; repeatedly changing one static offset will not correct an error that accumulates over time.

Do not assume YouTube caused the issue. Determine where it first appears: in OBS’s local output, only in monitoring, in the live stream, or only in a recorded or uploaded version.

Locate the output where sync first goes wrong

  1. Make a baseline recording. Record OBS output locally while the podcast stream runs. Compare speech and visible movement near the beginning and again after enough runtime for the reported drift to appear. There is no single standard test duration; make the test long enough to reproduce your symptom.
  2. Check YouTube playback. Compare the audience-facing live playback with the local recording at similar points. If the local file is already drifting, investigate the OBS or device path. If the local file stays in sync but YouTube playback does not, check the live output and platform stream configuration rather than presuming a cause.
  3. Check any archive separately. Compare the source file, the local recording, and the YouTube archive. If the mismatch appears only in an uploaded or archived video, inspect whether the audio and video track durations match. YouTube’s upload guidance makes that recommendation for uploaded videos; it is not a universal live-stream repair.

Match OBS and device sample rates

Compare OBS’s audio sample-rate setting with the rate configured for each audio device, including capture devices. YouTube Live’s health guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and flags mismatches between primary and backup streams. Keep the primary and backup feeds aligned if you use both.

A mismatch is worth correcting, but it does not prove that every progressive sync problem comes from sample rate. Test again after aligning settings, and compare the actual output over a sustained run.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Investigate independent device clocks

Separate audio and capture devices can rely on independent clocks. Even when both are set to the same nominal sample rate, their clocks may not run identically; over time, that difference can show up as drift.

If your tests point to separate USB or capture devices, try consolidating the relevant sources through one audio interface or common routing path. This is a setup-dependent option, not a guaranteed fix or a reason to buy hardware before identifying the fault. Any interface needs the right inputs, connection type, and routing for your system.

Verify the program output, not just your headphones

Listen to or inspect the stream or recording output itself. Local monitoring can behave differently from the audio sent to viewers, so a delay heard only in your headphones does not establish that the YouTube stream is delayed.

An OBS forum discussion describes a monitoring scenario in which the monitor followed a device clock while other output followed OBS’s clock. That is an individual explanation, not a universal diagnosis. If the issue is monitor-only, test whether muting, rerouting, or resetting monitoring changes what you hear, while separately checking the program output.

Use OBS Stats to rule in or out dropped frames

Check OBS Stats for missed or skipped frames and review any network or dropped-frame indicators. OBS explains that dropped frames occur when the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate, causing video frames to be dropped. That is a separate diagnostic path from audio clock drift; a network symptom alone does not prove the cause of a gradually widening audio gap.

If OBS reports dropped frames, follow OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance and investigate whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Reducing bitrate or improving network conditions may address connection-related frame loss, but it is not necessarily a remedy for independent clock drift.
