First check OBS Stats before changing settings: rising dropped frames point to an unstable or insufficient connection to YouTube ingest, while rendering or encoding lag points to local computer workload. If those counters look healthy, investigate the playlist source, audio path, or viewer-side buffering instead. The right fix depends on where the stutter begins.
Identify which part of the stream is stuttering
Open OBS’s Stats window and watch the counters during a representative section of the playlist. Note whether the connection indicator changes and whether dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag increase. Also note where you hear or see the problem: in the OBS preview, in the outgoing stream, or only on viewers’ devices.
- Dropped frames are increasing: investigate the connection from OBS to the remote ingest server and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Rendering or encoding lag is increasing: reduce the work OBS or the computer must do locally.
- OBS counters stay healthy, but the playlist stutters in preview or monitoring: inspect the playlist source and media playback path.
- Only some viewers report buffering: compare from another device or connection; viewer hardware and internet service vary.
These symptoms can overlap. Change one setting at a time, then compare the same segment and OBS counters so you can tell whether the change helped.
Check the playlist source and its files
Confirm the source is appropriate for a playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, loop-playlist, shuffle, visibility behavior, and network caching. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s standard Media Source handles individual media files and offers a loop option, but it is not the same playlist-capable source.

Using VLC does not guarantee smoother playback in every setup. Test the actual playlist files and watch both the OBS preview and audio meter. If one item consistently triggers the problem, test that file by itself and compare it with the rest of the playlist. Avoid changing cache values without a symptom-specific reason; the documented guidance does not establish one universal cache setting.
Check whether the problem follows a particular item
Play the playlist from the beginning and note the item and time where the stutter begins. Test that media file on its own through the same source. If the issue follows one item, focus on that item’s playback rather than changing stream bitrate or audio sync for the whole broadcast.

Fix local rendering or encoding overload
When OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, reduce local workload before troubleshooting the network. Try one change at a time and compare the same counters during the same playlist segment.
- Simplify the scene: remove sources and filters that are not needed for the stream.
- Reduce expensive or unnecessary browser sources. For local audio and video files, OBS recommends using Media Source or VLC Source.
- If the workload remains high, lower the output resolution or frame rate. Moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce work, though the picture will have less motion detail.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator, as OBS lists this as a quick fix for performance issues.
Do not treat an Ethernet cable as a fix for rendering or encoding lag. It addresses a different layer of the system.

Fix dropped frames and connection instability
If OBS’s dropped-frame percentage rises, investigate the upload route to YouTube ingest. OBS recommends lowering bitrate, trying another streaming server, and checking for VPNs, security software, network utilities, outdated drivers, or hardware issues that could affect the connection.
- Test upload stability: OBS gives about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not a guarantee. Use a connection that can sustain the chosen bitrate consistently, and stay within YouTube’s limits.
- Test wired networking: OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends testing a wired connection. An Ethernet cable is relevant when Wi-Fi instability is suspected; it will not correct local rendering or encoding overload.
- Try a different ingest server: OBS recommends this as a connection troubleshooting step. Compare the dropped-frame counter under otherwise similar conditions.
- Temporarily check network intermediaries: review VPN, security software, network utilities, and drivers that may affect the route. Avoid leaving security protections disabled as a routine fix.
Lowering bitrate may improve stability but can reduce image quality. A connection that fluctuates may fail at a bitrate that appears below its headline speed, so judge by sustained stream behavior rather than a single speed-test result.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s live guidance
YouTube recommends testing before the event using audio and video motion similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and its messages. Its published guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a promise that your upload connection can sustain them or that they suit every setup. Check the current guidance for other resolutions and codecs rather than extrapolating these figures. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different viewer formats; that does not rule out buffering on a particular viewer’s device or connection.

Isolate audio stuttering without guessing at sync delay
Watch the playlist source’s audio meter in OBS. Use monitoring to listen first at the source and then through OBS monitoring; checking as early as possible in the device or source path can help identify where the sound becomes irregular.
- If the source meter itself is irregular, focus on the playlist item or its playback source.
- If the source appears steady but monitored audio is not, investigate the OBS audio path and routing.
- If audio is steady in OBS but viewers report a problem, compare the outgoing stream and another viewer device before changing sync settings.
YouTube’s guidance gives audio sample-rate recommendations of 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Those figures do not establish that a sample-rate mismatch is causing a particular stutter. Do not add an arbitrary sync offset: measure the offset and identify where it occurs first.
When only viewers report buffering
If OBS’s outgoing counters look healthy, ask viewers whether the issue affects all devices or just one, and compare playback on another device or internet connection. OBS notes that viewers have different devices and network access. Resolution and bitrate choices can trade picture detail for broader reach, so use stream health and representative viewer playback to guide any adjustment.
